I've been having starting problems for several months now but last week in the IOM it got worse.
When I press the starter button the engine feels as if it has turned once. If I press the starter button again it normally starts.
Whilst in the IOM it took 6, 7 presses of the button to start.
Once started the bike bikes runs fine.
I looked in to the problem several months ago and bought a new battery as I thought this was the problem. Since then then have added a new starter relay.
When I press the starter button I can sometimes hear a wining sound plus a metallic vibration whidh is comming from the flywheel area.
This has lead me to believe the starter is not working properly.

Sprag clutch most likely not starter motor itself.

umm what Darren said , the wining will be the starter motor spinning, the metallic vibration (bad ) will be the sprag - drop the oil and whip jhe caseing off and have a look

Blah blah

Poor battery condition will kill the sprag bearing, ending up with the starter spinning but the engine not spinning.

This is the problem I had with my old 900, and I ended up with a new sprag bearing, flywheel, starter and battery It also took Ducati Coventry 3 goes to get the correct flywheel and each time the price went up  (and then having fixed it, I promptly sold it...)

From memory I got the new starter from electrex world and it was a straight swap http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/acatalog/SM9162.html

Gulp - Sprag clutch, never heard of one!

Just checked my Haynes manual and there is a section on how to remove this and check.
Looks like the bike is going to be taken of the road a little earlier this year.:grump:

It's not difficult, but you will need to get the fly wheel nut off - I bought a 12v impact driver. Feel free to pm me if you want to have a chat about it.

And correct flywheel locking tool for when you torque it back up.
People will say you can use ' a softer metal ' penny between starter gear to jam it up. Or a clutch holding tool to hold things steady, but while you may ' get away' with doing either of these, i wouldn't personally.
