View Full Version : Rear Wheel clearance on S2R/S4R ??

Working on Project Bike today....

...have just discovered (the hard way) that a 6" rear wheel fouls the single sided swingarm fitted to S2R/S4R models.

As this rim is only 0.5" wider than the standard (5.5") rim, it indicates that the standard rim will clear the swingarm by appx. 0.25"

Can anybody with an S2R/S4R verify this 0.25" clearance please ?

Thanks

I have been working on my bike (2005 S2R 800) today catching up on a few routine jobs so took the opportunity to check the rim to swingarm clearance. It is approx. 15mm or 9/16" - measured by using various width pieces of wood as a slip gauge. Difficult to be really accurate as the inside face of the swingarm is curved! The tyre size is 180/55 - ZR17.
Hope this helps, Martin. :gromit:

Thanks Martin.

It is difficult to measure, but 15mm at the closest point (this being a 17 x 5.5 rim ) ??

I've offered up a 17 x 6.0 5-Spoke Machesini rim of a 996, and it fouls the swingarm just before it seats fully on the axle flange - I estimate it's only 1~2mm too wide at it's closest, looking at the remaining gap between flange & wheel mounting face

..which has me puzzled, as being only 12.7mm wider overall than a 5.5" rim, I would have expected the 5.5" rim to have around 9~10mm clearance ? (+12.7/2 = 6.4mm extra width either side of centre)

If your 5.5" rim has 15mm clearance, at closest point, then my 6.0" rim should have (15.0 - 6.4 = 8.6mm) clearance ?

Anyway, dilemna now is: Do I ditch the 6.0 Magnesium rim in favour of a 5.5 OR Do I keep the 6.0 & relieve the swigarm to clear ... ?

I assume that all these wheels from different models (748/916/996/998 etc) have the same offsets, so why is my wheel so close to the swingarm ?????

AHHHHHHH

Penny has just dropped

Wheel hub is eccentric, so Rim to Swigarm clearance will vary, depending on hub rotational position as the axle moves fore/aft !!!!

Stupido !

Need to check reccomended hub position extremities and check fouling ?
