Hi all, my son has a 99 Monster Dark which he loves despite not really giving it any TLC. Anyway not massively surprised that a week ago the engine died, most likely a belt but I am guessing. I don't especially think it's worth trying to fix but he has no money to buy a replacement bike that would offer him any confidence of being reliable etc. So, /if/ it was possible to source a sound secondhand replacement, roughly how much time would it take someone who knew what they were doing to swap out the dead engine for another one? How hard a job is it (assuming one has a complete replacement unit)?

TIA,
T

Couple of hours

You'd have to support the bike, take the shock off, swing arm off, sprk plugs off, earth wires off, undo carbs,( tank up, airbox off), engine bolts out

Probably some other stuff, but thats probably most of it.

There will be shims for the engine and swinarm, take a note of what goes where

Yep a few hours, probably alot of swearing, few cups of coffee, some biscuits. Well that's what it took me.

may not be a belt , do electrics , starter work and turn over??? when belt covers are off are they whole or bust ,,
