I bought what was supposed to be a NOS DP kit for a 2001 m900ie; consisting of high-level DP Titanium/Remus cans/fitting kit, DP cut down airbox lid/filter and a DP ECU.
I'm not fitting the cans just now - not until I sort out the shock as the hugger/cans will only get intimate (that's another story, but shock seems to have a very soft spring fitted - 50mm laden sag, with all pre-load adjustment already used, possibly even a shorter shock - I got a theory it might have been set up for a petite rider with short legs), but I wanted to make sure my existing Sil Moto cans (without baffles) weren't running the bike too weak.
And I figured the Sil Motos without baffles probaby had comparable back pressure to the DP's (which have no baffles or provision for any at all - bet they sound great, LOL)
So I fitted the DP filter & airbox cover (while marveling at the factory hacksaw marks :)) and the ECU.
The ECU did not have a DP box; it was in bubble wrap tucked into the DP filter box, and had no additional writing or stickers on it whatsoever; it did look like it probably had never have been fitted (or at least not run for long) in a bike.
I was surprised to note the ECU that came out had precisely the same #'s on the finned side as the one that went in. The ECU that came out had a Ducati Spa sticker with some other part #'s on it. But not, notably, the DP part #'s.
So my spidey sense started tingling....
Oddly (sure they didn't have this 2 months ago when I was looking), Ducati Spares Online had a NOS Ducati Performance ECU for a m900ie offered, part #96504900B.
Looking at their (small, cannot be zoomed without being illegible anyway) photos, the finned side looks identical (can't make out much on that photo), but the other photo shows a Ducati Performance sticker on the smooth side with the appropriate part # on it. And i was happy to note it said "M900ie" on it as well, because while some folks think 900ss and m900 share the same ECU (they do, and apparently the firmware is the same) but the injectors - and thus the maps/firing durations - are supposedly different.
So I bought it. It was cheaper than a NOS stock replacement.
Here's the question; given the lack of any DP markings on either ECU (and taking into account human nature and Sod's Law, to say nothing of the old RRP of DP ECUs back in the day), I think
the DP kit already had the DP ECU swapped out for a stock one,
the bike most probably just had a stock ECU fitted, and
I should fit the DP ECU currently on it's way to me before i do too many miles on the DP airbox
But I wanted to ask - did DP ECUs exist or ever get supplied without any stickers/writing/markings whatsoever?
I mean, I might have anything from 1 to 3 DP ECU's when the 3rd one gets here, with the remainder being stock.
:dizzy:
Is there any way to tell? Thoughts?
