Hi guys,
Thought it was about time i posted up a thread on my new bike! As many of you have probably already seen I've been having nothing but issues with this bike so far :banghead: :chuckle: but yet i still love it! Still isn't running very well under load but finers crossed i get to the bottom of it soon with all this nice weather. I do have lots of plans for it but they are on hold just now!
When i got it:

I'm not a fan of the SIL Motorsport cans so decided to swap them out for the stubbie Mivv titanium can's i had on my 600:

Haha it came with the bike so it wasn't me :chuckle: going to do the projector with HID xenon conversion as well
M600: don't like the brown seat but that grey colour rocks!
Couldn't agree more mate the seat is rank! I had planned on changing it to black but then i bought the 900 so just done the paint, service and replaced the forks for selling it :mand: it's an alfa romeo satin bumper colour

So today i sorted out the wiring for the indicators. It began with doing a continuity test which showed that there was nothing there, not a sausage! So i started to strip back the loom and it turns out the original owner hadn't finished hooking stuff up before wrapping the loom back up...
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/Dirt_Crazy/Ducati%20Monster%20900SIE/DSC_0475_zpshmiv7uxr.jpg
The green/white wires weren't attached from just after the loom plug so neither front/rear worked on the right where as the black/white for the left side was wired into the front one but not the rear so had to splice them together.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/Dirt_Crazy/Ducati%20Monster%20900SIE/DSC_0478_zpsaayax2c3.jpg
I did solder eveything but my soldering isn't worth of pictures :chuckle:

I'd be wary of doing that as I've had them work loose in the past. Soldering is very easy as long as you have clean wire to work with
Good to hear that you're getting there with the bike.

Two secrets to soldering ....
1) Absolute cleanliness.
2) Don't use modern lead free solder, its useless .... use the old fashioned lead/tin stuff.
Also, you can get crimp connectors where the shrinktube is lined with hot-melt glue.
This gives a reliable, sealed joint.
Or simply use the glue-lined shrinktube over soldered joints.
In either case, the glue gives added mechanical strength to the joint.

Good to hear that you're getting there with the bike.
Yeah me to! Very happy i can actually ride it now as it's making me a very happy and adrenaline filled guy!

Will bear this in mind for when i'm next soldering buddy, thanks for that!
Update:
So the bike came to me with 3 random wires at the head tube which turned out to be fuel, oil pressure and neutral which couldn't be wired into the koso clocks so i came up with the idea to drill out M8 bolts and fit 3mm LED's inside them then put them where the original mounts are for the bars. I only ordered one to make sure it was going to work so i done the fuel light today:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/Dirt_Crazy/Ducati%20Monster%20900SIE/DSC_0497_zpsfyp1o4e8.jpg
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/Dirt_Crazy/Ducati%20Monster%20900SIE/DSC_0498_zps5yxjgkg2.jpg
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/Dirt_Crazy/Ducati%20Monster%20900SIE/DSC_0499_zpsjjqx0kst.jpg
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/Dirt_Crazy/Ducati%20Monster%20900SIE/DSC_0500_zpsun3h2ius.jpg
However the fuel light is staying on so i think the low level sensor may be knackered... as i checked for current when the tank was empty and full, both times there was 12v going to the wire :freak: any other way i can check?
cheers,
Roo

I have same dash, hehe. Anyhu. Fuel light will not work that easy. It is not a simple on/off switch.
It is a resistance based sender. The hotter it gets (less fuel) the more it does something.
There is a adapter from Koso, well two. One does on/off with led. One does on/off on dash.

So since my last up date everything has just went downhill... as some will have seen from my other post one of the flywheel shims have been destroeyd and i think some of it is possibly in the gear drum as the bike is stuck in 4th :fiery: absolutely raging. Took the cover off in the hope that the dog leg was just stuck and sadly it was not!

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/Dirt_Crazy/Ducati%20Monster%20900SIE/DSC_0551_zpsfagsykwu.jpg

So sorry to hear of your woes with this bike and its previous owner, who we found was one to fabricate the truth somewhat. I did wonder if he'd been so deep into the engine as to lighten everything, so probably a good thing that he did not. I'm pretty sure I think I have a useable clutch hub with all the posts intact that you could have if it would help you out of a spot as both of my Ducs now have aftermarket slipper jobbies. Give me a shout if you need one and I'll dig one out.

I think he did go that deep into the engine, probably in an attempt to lighten stuff, but like most things he didn't finish the job properly and then cacked up putting it all back together again.
Have a look at the big spring hooked into the pawl on the selector shaft, these are a common failure on high mileage bikes and will cause the stuck in gear symptom you describe. only about a fiver if you're not paying somone else for several hours strip & rebuild. You might get lucky.
I like your idiot light solution, very neat.

Yes I can fully see that myself now, time will tell if it does have lighter pistons/rods and internal gears... I still think he has been in there but again not to sure if i believe he has! Thanks for that buddy I will give you a shout :) hoping to get a billet one but this could get me by if i get the engine sorted out quick!

hahah sounds about right mate :chuckle:will find out when I get this engine apart. Kind of hope it does have lightened stuff in there so I haven't been totally cheated :cens:

Excuse my lack of knowledge on this, but what is the pawl? Is that the spring on the back of the engine that is pushing the ball bearing into the fork drum? If so then that is fine. The bike is on 14k :) I've decided to do the engine work myself, if i can do car engines i'm sure i can manage this hopefully... hah!
Thanks buddy was fair chuffed with myself on that one to :yoparty:

A billet clutch hub would definitely be better/lighter/stronger, even better still if you can pick up a cheap slipper. The difference to the standard clutch vs slipper is like night and day. :)
The only thing I can see from your pic that is lightened is the clutch basket, looks like an alloy one which may or may not have been standard anyway (depends on year/model).
Another easy lightening mod to free up some ponies is to fit one of these:-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DUCATI-BILLET-ALUMINUM-LIGHTEN-RACE-FLYWHEEL-748-749-848-996-998-999-1098-1198-/230922932979?hash=item35c41452f3:m:mRqPqPw00qixA51 EFKKPN9A
I could be wrong but it looks like yours is still the standard steel one.
Pawl: the arm with the elbow in it (24 & 26) that sits just behind the flywheel, that connects the gear lever shaft to the selector drum. There's a very light spring at the elbow, the one that gives trouble is the beefy gear lever return spring at the bottom (27).

So today the bike was booked in for it's mot at 12:00 so i got up early as i had to sort out the bikes idle, once i done that i discovered at 10:30 that the rose joints for the floating caliper were knackered so i ran about like a headless chicken trying to get some and luckily managed to get some and dust boots for them

It's always a good feeling when your bike passes its MOT. Mine passed yesterday, though I had to change the number plate as it was too small - by 10mm on the width, 15mm height. I walked to Halfrauds, got a plate made whilst I waited for £15 and gave it to the garage. The tester then gave me a fail with a pass on retest. Crazy!

Glad to hear you've got the bike sorted out in the end.
Here's hoping for many trouble free miles from now on.
Btw, I assume your comment that you can finally confirm the lightened flywheel is a sarcastic one ? ... I see no difference.
... I see no difference.
Look again, it's 5-10mm less OD

Ah, yes.
Its quite obvious if you look at the inboard end.
I was just looking at the outer face.

Your Aprilia front mudguard looks not too bad. I assume it goes straight on with no messing as Aprilia's use the same forks. I cant make out what forks you have there though.. Not the standard Sie ones by the looks?
Well done for getting those rose joint boots to fit. I got some for mine. I managed to get the boots on the rose joints and filled them with grease, but couldn't see how it would all work with those long tubes either side where the bolt goes through.. I don't want all that rubber under the bolt head and nut. Seemed to me that if you squashed it all up, the rubber would just jam the rose joint up or cut the rubber and prevent the nut and bolt from clamping up the joint centre properly. Did you cut the tubes off or squash them up?
Come to think of it was the hoop bottom joints that I couldn't get to fit, as there is just not enough room in the clevises even with the tubes cut off.

Never got round to fitting the engine covers last year so currently doing that just now! Also need a new clutch so priced up a slipper which I'll probably have to save up a wee bit for so going to buy clutch plates for the time being .
Hopefully keep the updates a bit more regular!
Cheers,
Roo
