hope anyone can help,

on my s4r the swing arm fits to the engine there is four big washers. two thick ones and two thin ones.
now my question is, is it the thick ones that go between swinging arm and engine, or is it the thin ones, or is it both?

They are probably the shims to get correct spacing and line up to front sprocket. You should have noted it with a drawing or photo when taking it off . Put it back and get a straight edge from rear sprocket to front. If out remove pivot and required shims to correct.
