796 or 1100...

I prefer the look of the 1100 with the exhaust, and it doesnt have those mahoosive peg hangers, but i did really like the idea of the really light clutch on the 796.

I really cant make up my mind. What else is in it, other than more power, and more money?

Please help...:dizzy:

Better front suspension, bla bla bla.... My experience is that we're able to tolerate a lot if we ride what we want and dream/lust after, so general advice - get what you WAAAANT!

The dry clutch issues can be modified (slave and/or master cylinder and/or drop two pressure plate springs) very close to a wet clutch pull.

So the lighter 796 clutch is wet, and the 1100 is dry?

Depends on your riding: mostly urban = 796, mostly rural = 1100,
do you haul a pillion around often?

1100 & 1100S have a dry clutch and similar pipes to 796 as stock, 1100evo makes about 5bhp more has a dryWET clutch and low pipes.

The 796 feels a bit lighter all round and will allow you to carry a bit more corner speed. There are minor differences in the riser height of the various models. As ever, test ride some.

Personally I'd look for an 1100S and change the pipe and pegs

Why would you look for an 1100S and change the pipes, if they both have dry clutches but the evo has more power?

EVO is wet clutch - you'd get the power and lighter clutch pull ;)

OK, keep getting dfferent facts here. An 1100 evo has a wet clutch then? So in comparison to a 796, hardly any difference?

Yes, the 1100 Evo has a wet clutch, and it is very light :-) and is the most powerful of the 1100 engines also has DTC 4 levels as well as ABS

I'm pretty sure Slob know it's a wet clutch :)

I believe the 796 is a bit lower, has softer suspension (which is good at moderate speeds), maybe slightly different ergonomics (can and should be customized anyway) and probably a bit smoother at low speed/medium throttle openings. EVO is a more obvious candidate for a sprocket change and active clutch feathering use - for better control in traffic.

I'm constantly on the clutch through central London on my 1200 Harley Sportster, so use to that already, except that has a heavy clutch.

I have put an Oberon clutch slave on my 796, I think it makes it a bit lighter but I dunno.

I also changed to brembo radial clutch MC at the same time so hard to know really.

I used to ride in central London all the time when I had a standard 796. I didn't find the clutch much bother.

If you're worried about the stiff suspension on the 1100evo; I had mine set up by KAIS Suspension for my 70kg and back B-roads riding. More comfortable and better on bumpy corners. Clutch is very light too. Overall, it's a fantastic bike.

No I'm not worried about the 796 clutch, that's as light as anything! I just don't want a heavy clutch like some monsters have.

I just went to a shop and tried the clutch on an 1100 Evo (Ducati Meccanica version) and the clutch was waaaaay heavier than a 796, and the Eco is apparently a wet clutch?! It was almost as heavy as my Harley.

You need a dry clutch so you can do sexy things like this

I have owned a 796 and now an evo

I would buy the 1100 evo between the two

Wet clutch = less maintenance

I was never planning on buying a bike with a dry clutch anyway, but the wet clutch of the 1100evo seemed pretty heavy when i tried it earlier.

Don't try a 1098 then, that's heavy clutch

Riding the 796 is mega light in comparison, I rode mine to Italy and back happily in 2012, both good bikes

If your budget can afford, go for the bigger one :)

I don't doubt that I could cope with the 1100evo clutch, its just that im used to Harleys and Buells, so when I tried a 796, it was just so enticing.

Right now I'm just umming and ahhing between £7k on an 1100evo, and £5k on a 796...

After a weekend of racing my 1965 250cc Ducati Mach 1 I actually have to check that the slave cylinder seal hasn't gone on my '97 900 Monster, so trust me a dry clutch isn't that bad.

But if you're in any doubt here is the perfect cure for anyone who thinks that modern Ducati clutches are heavy, buy one of these:

nope, I don't think the 1100 evo is 'bad', its just after trying a 796 im tempted by it because its so easy, not because the 1100 is so hard. The 1100 evo to me is normal, because its like my Harley and Buell.

Clutch on a 1100s is bearable and easier than a s4. The EVO is so much easier than a 1100s and a great bike to ride and not as harsh without Ohlins unless you like that or can set it up nice.

796 is a great all rounder. Looks. Power is still good. Light and agile and tall like the 1100. Light clutch .

The 1100 Evo has so much more grunt than the 796, put a 1 tooth less sprocket on the front and a decent can with a Rexxerr ecu flash and it is bloody awesome

You've found no difference between a heavy clutch and looking nice? Me neither, that's what I said, I was just saying it's not worth it.

Or you were saying you've found no difference between the two clutches?

I had a wet clutch and when I changed to a dry I found no difference in terms of how hard I had to pull the lever. In fact if anything the dry clutch feels a little lighter. That said it's a custom build so my experience may not be transferable over different models of course. I'm just saying that in my experience dry clutch does not equal heavy clutch.

Change the colour (don't like the green and red plastics), put a nicer exhaust on, possibly underseat or with evo headers, and then the rest we'll see - its completely standard at the moment so will need lots doing...

As far as I am aware the plastics from the 696, 796, 1100, 1100S and 1100evo are interchangeable.
