Hi, I'm starting a restoration on a 2004 996 S4R monster and looking for any parts you might be able to help me with? Poor machine has been stored outside under a bad cover and the carbon parts plus the casings have all suffered badly from corrosion so I need anything you have that can help me restore it. Thanks for looking. Pm me please.

I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions but surely if you have all the parts present and presumably are going to have to remove them to replace anyway then why not simply get them cleaned up and either painted or polished?

The carbon should rub down ok and be refreshed nicely with some U-Pol lacquer and to my mind it would be a lot more satisfying restoration to make it the way you want it to be.

There are several threads here that will give you some inspiration and so in no particular order:

You're welcome....

This is the stuff you'll need along with some fine grade wet and dry paper-

With very faded carbon a good trick is to rub it down as flip has said but I tint my lacqure with a little black to bring the color back.

I have loads of engine parts if you need along with other stuff easier if you say what you need

Yes, please post up what specific parts you are wanting. Many parts are interchangeable with other monsters and even other models eg ST of the same vintage. Most parts I needed were sourced on here or the bay of E.

Thanks everyone I'm taking off all the items this weekend and then getting into the mechanical work so will be posting a want list soon. Any suggestions for cleaning off the white corrosion on the casings plus the paint is peeling off the cam belt side of the engine too. Also the side pods with badges have got water staining under them, anyone know where I can get some replacements ?

The best thing to do is take lots of pictures. Firstly as a record of initially what it looked like to start and secondly post them up on here with some kind of Photo bucket account so we as a forum can see the damage and give more insight of advice to tell you how or what you should do or need. All Ducati paint flakes and usually within the first few years. Badges are generally made of metal or plastic but need a looky. Replacements are usually available but may cost. Decals are cheap.
Regards removing paint depends whether you doing a small area or whole engine. Dropping the engine is not such a big deal depending on how much work you wish to do. I refurbished my s4 into an s4r and completely repainted the engine. I just wet and dried the casings and sprayed with a hammerite smooth finish in black as my colour choice. It lasted years and that was 7 years ago and last time I saw it was looking good.

Thanks Albie, will start taking some pictures tomorrow and post up on my website if I can remember how to do it lol. I'm definitely going to drop the engine over the winter months but I love riding and the weather is still mild enough for me to get a few miles in before the chill set in so I'm basically planning to use weekdays for the small cosmetic jobs and mechanical work. Weekend opportunity for some rides and then full on resto as soon as the weather dictates.

If it runs then ride it and prepare to unbolt over winter. I started mine end of Jan 2007 and was ready for spring weekender.

If you have a website do post up on there instead just whack a link to your signature like mine underneath my post which goes to my blog of M900.

Had my first ride with the S4R at the weekend and it ran great once I got some clean fuel in the tank, mechanicals all seem good but will definitely need these items to bring it up to my personal standard. Front and rear sprockets, carbon radiator shields, rear carbon "T-Tray" I think it is called, alternator and clutch casings, clock glasses are scratched so need to find new glass or clock casing, front brake reservoir cap and Sidestand.

I may be able to help with the radiator covers. I have 2 types available. I also have a full open exhaust /decat pipe, Termi/Arrow copy for sale, just needs some elbow grease!

Tea tray as in handy for putting a cuppa on it. I always thought it looks more like a beaver tail.
Casings can be vapour blasted clean to original and powder coated or polished or painted reasonably cheap.
Resovoir caps are aluminium originally and they just furr up and can be wire brushed clean and painted or polished or now Ducati dealers can sell you a brand new one in plastic so it wont ever do that and not dear either.

Hi all, big thank you for the tips on the laquer, parts and other bits, I've located a local paint specialist who is going to do all the carbon refurbishment for me in October with the uPol brand. Also he is going to do the engine repaint when I get it out of the frame with the correct engine paint with additional areas covered to protect it against the elements. I'm still trying to get a toolkit and the tank stay if anyone can help please?

You would be better off buying a 916/748 toolkit as I think the S2/4R version does not include the big c spanner needed for the chain adjustment. Although they are easy to get if you wanted the original one. The original tank stay is clipped under the original seat not fixed to the frame like earlier, but they are pretty rubbish anyway and risk dropping the tank, but again if you want original they are easy to get on fleabay, I have one but I just use a piece of wood as it is much safer.

Make sure your paint sprayer is going to use U-pol No1, UV-RESISTANT lacquer.
They do another clear lacquer which is much cheaper but not uv-resistant.

Can't find anything on fleabag in the UK for toolkit or stay thought the forum would be a good place to ask before buying from the USA!

MVS Performance have the c spanner listed. The original toolkits come up once in a while, more so for 748/916 and nice to have but tbh the actual tools are like mecanno toys but you know that already and most are overpriced anyway, I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay £20 for a couple of crap allen keys a spanner and a screwdriver in a red bag. The 748/916 kit is exactly the same but you do at least get the c spanner too for the chain adjustment.

Yep, welcome to the world of Ducati where a Japanese part will cost you 3 times what it would from Honda/Suzuki etc. Why I paid £125 for a part that cost £60 from Honda I will never know, same part same supplier etc. It pays to do your home work Fkn Nippon Denso
