I got this stuff on my can and 1, have no idea what it is, whether it is something that has splashed on or is a coating that has gone bad, and 2, have no idea how best to get it off and get it looking nice again. Any ideas anyone?

If that was paint or powder coating I'd say it was corrosion under the coating. I haven't seen that with chrome though?

Dirty,
you say stuff on chrome, so they are steel silencers ?
i would think they are Alloy and have been badly lacquered.
If Alloy strip lacquer and hope the corrosion hasn't eaten to far in to the base material:spin:

I agree, that looks typical of corrosion getting under the lacquer on polished ally.
It looks like you can see the lacquer in the second pic.
Tyre-thrown grit would have started the process, allowing the corrosion "worms" to get a hold.
Try a magnet on it.

Ah well done guys, my bad.

Ok, so part 2 still stands. What's the best remedy?

Take the cans off

Sit down for a few hours with some wet/dry paper until no more corrosion can be seen

Polish cans until desired shine is reached

refit to bike

Job done

take the cans off and run open pipes*

*the police may take offence to this, as may your neighbours, oh and you'd also probably need a remap/rejet...

Good idea, but I think I'll pass this time :)

Ok, let me get this straight. What I think you are saying is

Remove the can

Buy a shiny new can

Fit the shiny new can

Hmm, sounds like a good plan to me, thanks :mand:

And then sell to a mug who will polish it up :mand: I do that a lot it seems.

I didn't think you had cans on your bike, didn't you have boom tubes?

I have to admit it did cross my mind how much you like a good polish. If you ever feel the need mate :)

Is that for the plastic bike?

Oh, I don't think I've seen the rest of your collection. But yeah, what everyone has said. Nitromors may help getting the lacquer off, even though its mostly water these days.

It's for one of the naughty bikes yes :)

It's only half Monster.

This laquer is prob from around 2000, but anyway I'm not that interested in the bike to do anything beyond a little light fettling. Polishing exhausts is def off the menu. I might treat it to a new one sometime though.
