Well who would have thought within 6 months of selling my beloved M1100s to Mart64 I would have been back so quick with another bike. I am sure there were doubter's thinking I had Sold Out but I always said I have had all the fun of power now and want period and had my heart set on getting as early bike as I could afford when I could afford it. I actually did have a plan to try and get a natty boys old tricolor 600 but had no response there.
So it happened last Friday all by luck of browsing facebook on Ducati Proteams page where a few minutes previous an advert was posted of a customer selling a M900 for spares or repair £500. I instantly phoned up and spoke to the guy saying I will pop around after work and I want it whatever as people were sniffing around. I never realised at first it was a 1993 as the wheels and hoop were silver and thought maybe a 1995. Now the dilemma was that the engine may need its big ends doing and the guy couldn't afford to do it as he needed the bike to ride. I was and am ok as a 1993 bike is the one for me that I would prefer. I had a 1997 to begin with and I intend to keep it original.
So after getting the go ahead from Caroline we go and see the bike not 5 miles from me and instantly surprised how decent it is overall. New ohlins on the rear or mint condition anyhow. Tank is painted along with front mudguard and the hinge had been welded as had a leak. Its got all the right bits and not cut up other than heated grips and gold bar ends and a pair of missing rear indicators and tail light as replace with LED built in one. No seat cowl either. Deal was done after I asked to listen to the engine . It wasn't as bad as I thought tbh and have no issues to restore.
Picked the bike up Saturday night on the trailer and squeezed her in the garage safely and we were both really pleased.
Never got to do anything until Monday night and basically removing stuff unwanted and anything I can clean whilst keeping it able to run as it has to go to the garage and have an engine inspection to what needs doing or the best way to approach it.
Getting most of the stuff off with only 1 bolt breaking so far and all bolts nuts are original and will be replated and used again.
I will leave you with some images I took so far but this is a long term project over summer and winter even though MoT is until January it may not be done until next weekender possibly. Its going to be as it would be.

So basically its a step by step task of improving whats on there. Limited budget as the engine is the cost here and the priority right now. I have no money to play with buying new other than cables where needed and that's why I cutting the rubber of the optional type footrests to reveal stock ones underneath. The carbon fibre is in good order generally but faded and the smoothness sucked out of it. Had 2 coats of lacquer so far and the gloss is coming back slowly. I have a rear light swapped for the LED and 2 correct discs what need a repaint coming too. Not sure about geting the seat cowl yet will have to hope it comes my way. Got correct Tomaselli grips bought. I do need a rear hanger 8mm thread big headed bolt if anyone has a spare as mine snapped getting it out and a front indicator mount bolt too with the flat cheese head m6.
I also need a couple of mudguard mount screws the large pan head ones as had 2 missing on the rear hugger.

I don't know what to say. The other bike wasn't meant to be a replacement . I never fell out of love for Monsters. Never will. The yellow bike is brilliant but I needed to build something or save for the right one that's old. Jim wouldn't sell me his even though I tried.

I have NO REGRETS at all. Happy with Monster and other bike. :mand:

Sorry for some reason they should all be open pictures ????

Oh and thanks matey . You know I love it here.

And have a great time at the TT with the rest of the gang...:flag:

Oh ok. I have a blog going anyhow. I just wanted to say Hellooo I can feel a part again. Man arn't the old ones heavy though. Its such low down weight and lower bars but I don't intend to keep pushing it.

Let me tell you that what I like about the old one is the solidness of it and not fancy. Its a bit weird going around in a circle and coming back to the start and at the same time being happy with it. I just hope it doesn't require too much on the engine side because I want to get all the pony's back what may have disappeared.
Have to get the frame painted in bronze and no way getting it powdercoated as there is no colour even close. Wheels will be black satin powder coat and if I can get hoop done a close match that too. Is the hoop the same as the shock springs or lighter shade does anyone know.
My bike it seems have may came from possibly the same shop as Space monkeys in Welling @ AyeGee motorcycles as we have similar reg plates.
Not sure if the early model which is a cagiva component clutch cover has a rubber gasket seal like the later steel versions as mine seems to have rub marks inside but possibly clutch over packed which could have been the noise clanking. I will have to wait and see.

This needs sorting.. where's the webteam? And while they're at it- fix the damned PM text limits! VERY annoying when you have a lot of info to pass on and have to split it into three messages AND wait 60 seconds between sending each one. Come on - this is 2015 you know... My free forum that I made for myself and a group of friends can do all this. It's all in the Admin's control panel...

Stil wondering if the knocking is the big ends or the alternator bolt.... 25k ain't a lot even for a Ducati. My 93er has 46k and is solid...

I think the yellow is the same. Someone doing a rebuild recently repainted their hoop yellow and it looked fine.

The web team is Slob. I thought we had all got over the personal attacks on the webteam

If you have another forum, then how about helping Rob with this one? He has asked for help in the past.

You seem well placed to be able to help.

Nice bike Albie, welcome back

Hey, Albie, welcome back to full monsterdom.
That was a pleasant surprise.

May I be so bold as to make a suggestion ?
If it was my choice (and it isn't, its yours.. but if it was) I'd resist the temptation to rebuild it to "as it came out of the factory" spec. but instead build it more "as they would have, if not for market economics".
In other words, I would for example have no truck with re-plating old bolts or buying new oem spec plated ones, but instead would without question replace all with stainless, alloy or titanium as and where appropriate.
That kind of thing.
I suspect that this bike might be a keeper, so you might as well build it the way you want it yourself, rather than to factory spec ....?
Not so much how it would have been, more like how it should have been.
Arguably, that's the true spirit of monster anyway, perhaps.
Anyway, that's sticking my nose in a bit and so, to level things up, I will offer you all (or at least any that you should need) of the original bolts from my 750 which I have replaced so far ....should you be set on a foolhardy plan for originality. ;)
They're all individually bagged and labelled, and mostly not furry at all.

You were never gone, but welcome back anyway.

Thanks all. I'm sure the images will get sorted. Jeff thanks for offer of bolts. I would like to take you up on that for a least some of them . Mainly footrest hangers and caliper bolts and ones on cam belt covers. I want it as it came for a number of reasons.
There are enough of you out there making it your own and that's what is supposed to happen. I have been there done even got the tee shirt. This one is at an age of being nearly being lost for good so bringing it back to the beginning.
I am not saying I won't in the future add stuff like termis as my exhausts are not early ones and have chamfers but it's always nice to see how they were.

Why are suggestions for positive change always considered as a 'personal attack'? Perhaps we should try getting over that?

If some one has the experience then why not offer to help rather than demand fixes?

They are not attacks they are suggestions. It is a huge difference. Help? What is suggested involves a few clicks within the ACP and takes 5 mins, we are not talking about workload. Happy to help, I'm sure spacemonkey and lots of others would too but it's a matter of access. If someone sees an area where a small change could make a big positive difference then why should they be accused of attacking and being lazy just for mentioning it?

And too late, you already did! :mand:

For what it's worth I have mellowed over last 6 months and am now a moderator on another forum as I was asked and I am more positive about remarks and replies. It's all about asking and being patient in the hope of change.

Lol yes indeed. Its ok Martin . I wont be doing it for that reason particularly but wouldn't say NO to any award except for the bike I sold to Mart64 where he was adamant I should look after it. :mand:
Specifically no chopping I am afraid , boring I know and never though I would ever be so keen to put bits back on . I did however buy another bike to customise at my leisure and pleasure ( you know that yellow and black thing lol ) and that suffices to me enough to make me poor.
Amongst getting the other bike fuelled and loaded up like a mule I generally finished the footrests cutting all the rubber off and poling them up. Just some intricate picking in some grooves to do when I get another hour.
I lost out on the 2 seat cowls on Gumtree and that's a shame. I still need one in a state of reasonable repair if anyone can help and have a pair of new carbon side panels if you want a swap or some fat bars from a streetfighter.
My tomaselli grips arrived though and very nice too.
Now no fighting when I am away.:chuckle:

Never mind that bloke paid £26 for 4 secondhand indicators possibly damaged and I only needed 2. Just bought 2 brand new Ducati ones for £20 delivered so not so bad after all. Made the brackets for the newly acquired seat cowl tonight out of alloy sheet with a 90 bend already in it. Fitted on alright but left a gap on the seat so something needs adjusting. The hole position on the side is critical so I slotted the holes and am there. but I put a spacer under screw that mounts to the seat. Almost feels the flat part should have a crank in it.
The cowl itself is good and was the correct red too but after successfully removing white stripes it left a lacquer line which as carefully as I did wet and dry it off went down into the base coat so a complete respray is on the cards.

Got brand new indicators also in post too and managed to clean the rear light bracket mudguard nicely in all the nooks and crannies. Finally got the small nuts off the number plate light by dremelling ( other brands available ) the nuts as they had rusted on. Can clean them up now.
What bolts hold on rear indicator ie caphead allen bolt with lines or a shallow one with smaller allen key size. What nut also as in mechanical locknut.
Tomaselli hand grips bought to replace the heated grips.
Need to source a DUCATI sticker for seat cowl.
Footrests are now rid of their rubber coatings and are as stock items now.
Tomorrow some gentle work straightening the brake and clutch levers as they just don't look flat. A very careful adjustment needed and making sure I don't lose the brake switch pin.

Can anyone tell me anything about the tap on the oil feed line going from cooler to crankcase. No carb heaters on this model.

Need to source a DUCATI sticker for seat cowl.

You'll be needing here then:

http://www.motostars.co.uk/products.php?cat=102&pg=3

The Cagiva font is not so easy to get hold of from dealers now as I believe Cagiva own the copyright to it which is why you hardly ever see genuine Ducati merchandise using it these days.

Hi Albie,
Yes you need the 100mm size for the seat cowl (price is for a pair).

I have used Motostars a couple of times now and their decals seem pretty good.
I have just ordered the same design but only 60mm long for my carbon fairing so it will match the original red one.

Ordered and on way. Not that I can put on until a respray sadly. I also need to reinforce the areas around the moulded nut inserts as 2 were cracked. Rectified the strength with a soldering iron but intention is to make an outer wall from plasticine and throw some resin in there to cure around them. Same with other side once I reinstate a thread insert or a pair of m5 nuts on one that's broken off. It works with one but weak and looks bad. The joining web really should have been moulded thicker from a toolmakers point of view.

A couple of questions about the early engines guys. Now bearing in mind this is a 93 with a pull out choke model.
Question 1.
There is a tap on the oil feed line from crankcase to cooler. Is this an on/off for a purpose. No carb heaters on this one.
Question 2.
The alloy clutch cover ( with elephant ) looks thicker on the flange and was wondering if it had still a gasket of rubber like later ones do. There are some marks inside where I was wondering if clutch when out was rubbing.

That is not standard - maybe for winter use as means of switching that cooler off.

There isn't on either of mine.

No gaskets on mine, but have you checked that the cover hasn't been pushed in a little at the centre? They are quite soft.

I managed to straighten the brake lever easily by hand......

Albie, I'd keep the original, but wouldn't feel happy using it on the bike. Ally work hardens when you bend and re-bend it, and a brake lever isn't a place to take a chance of it snapping whilst you are using it..............

I'm looking forward to seeing it back on the highway.

Well as it was fathers day and don't appear to have any I decided to have a lay in and then ponse about with Monster. Seat cowl lugs all strong and good and ready to have the cowl resprayed asap. I will further try to neaten area up and if necessary make a surround.

Then on to the wire wheel for some bolt restoration and other parts. All coming up well because they were not so corroded and grubby in reality. Washers seem to be the worst culprits.

I managed to fix the broken hanger bolt by drilling out the broken stud and tapping it through m8 and putting a stud in there. I will then try to get our specialist welder BigOz to neatly weld the stud in place before coloured zincing.

The tap is for carb heaters, your bike should have them if it's got it's original carbs. Are there two bolts in the bottom of the float bowls? If so, them someone has taken the pipes off. I've not seen an early bike without them

No gasket under the clutch cover and it should also be grey not black

Obviously not but got somewhere at least cracking some bolts off and cleaning them up before putting them back. Most of the brake disc ones are new bar 3 of them so they must have been butchered with corrosion.

As I said last night will be working from the back end from now and tonight was the turn of the rear axle and brakes etc.

It actually started when I moved my bikes about as I wanted more room to do things and also wanted to hear it running outside in the open. Sadly it wouldn't start presuming the battery was getting tired. I know she will go but in the meantime its time to clean stuff up.

Removed the axle nuts which are good enough to use and only the righthand side one shows more wear than the other. Cleaned up ok though. The chain adjuster plates were quite grubby but look really good now and no bad marks or gouges to be seen.

The adjuster bolts which are about 100mm long were removed and covered in grime inside and once I wire wheeled and ran an M8 die down it they are good as new. The gold backplates were cleaned and the left hand one is the worst but not bad considering its age. Just a few scars but the colour is al good.

I will wait and do the axle and brake guide plate when the bike gets stripped down but I did the brake rotor bolts and they all look great condition as do the brake caliper bolts too after a brush down.

I could take the suspension hoop mount bolts out without the wheel coming out so again will wait but did the outside nuts.

I took the left hand hanger off to clean the rest of the bolts up and I need one or possibly two rubber inserts as one has split in two. Whilst off the chain swingarm guide was removed for cleaning and again the 3 dome bolts were good to come out and cleaned and prepped. The sprocket cover was then removed and same again and whilst removed I checked the front sprocket locking washer for getting the 2 bolts out. Yes results with no problem at all.

Whilst there I removed the 4 rubber plugs from the frame engine mounts. Full of grease which may have been when this frame was changed by a dealer years ago and someone had the hindsight to grease the bolts for the future removal instead of them corroding inside the engine casings. They both undid easily and nipped back up. I thought the would have been hexagon bolts but were allen head bolts.

It looks like the exhaust studs will also be easy as there is copperslip on them too but left them alone for now.

Whilst inspecting the swingarm there is damage which tbh I always expect on these alloy ones as they always seem to suffer exhaust mount bolts causing scrapes up the side where the bolts on the hangers seem to flex too much or they are possibly too long. I will dress it up as much as possible when I remove it.

I drilled out a broken bolt from one of the hugger mounts on the chain side. I re tapped it M6 and refitted the hugger with the cleaned up bolts to give it a good clean in place. It looks much better now but I still have to try and clean up some scrapes in the plastic on the right hand side if I can without ruining the overall finish.

Given a it a good clean as I go and is becoming tidy already prior to getting totally stripped and refinished.

Oh and I now realise how I broke that hanger bolt. It had a 12mm nut on the rear not really visible clamping an earth to the frame DOH !

So I have this odd bolt with an m8 thread with large allen key hole. It will work but its the only one that's odd. I also need one or two hanger rubber that go in the holes if anyone has any spare.

Indeed.

A couples of things I would like to know again.

Seat cowl graphic placement from back of cowl to nearest point of the decal with picture if possible ?

The correct colour for the clutch cover and how does it compare to belt covers ?

Is the horn colour black ?

Bar ends. They were black but are the weighted ?

The clutch cover should silver as per the crank cases, belt covers should be black, the horn on mine is silver.

Bar ends are weighted, the correct ones have a cross head screw head.

Ok that's good. Horn is wrong then but may have been replaced. I am going to have to get covers stripped of this paint . Hoping to get all the hangers stripped back down very soon as the paints too glossy and spoils it.
Ok spotted the bar ends in the bible and yes cross head large screw.

Was the alternator nut cover fixed with 2 slotted screws. I am thinking cross head or allen key.

Tonight I did some more and think basically now is a standstill until I get advise or engine fully checked out.
It may be good news that I have found a few things wrong that could mean things could be alright when fixed but I really don't know for sure.

I was cleaning the last of the bolts accessible to me like all around the engine cases and brackets and cleaned up the key lock metalwork and blow me the 2 tiny screws that hole the latch to the lock came out without any problem in fact they were loose. The cables good and wont be wasting good money on a new one but will lacquer over the cleaned fittings. The rest all came apart and is in the plating bucket.
The part that refuses absolutely to budge is the steering lock adjuster on the left side which although has been soaking for 48hrs in a bath of release agaent and even when heat applied it will not exit. Key is still strong but don't want to mess it up whilst on bike so when I get forks stripped I may get better purchase or buy a new one.

So this clutch which has been bugging me. I believed it was not correct on sight and wondered if the knocking may have been it.
I removed the springs and collars and armed with the Haynes book of lies measured the springs and should be 36.5mm long and all 6 are 40mm so are a 600 or 750 engine it seems.
I cleaned them up and the caps and bolts anyhow and then removed the clutch plates.
OH DEAR they are almost flat to the plate and measure around 2.81mm to best 2.83mm .
They are deemed to the project trophy pile and new ones are being sourced.

Then checking the pressure plate it does have a new bearing as was told by the last owner. Then I was looking at the locking nut. It looks tight but there is play to and fro when you pull the clutch drum and I can get a feeler gauge of 0.2mm in between the washer and nut washer. Is that the problem. ???? :confused

Alternator side all the bolts were removed one by one and cleaned and put back and did find one that may be stripped thread in the casing.
Removed the inspection cover and removed the paint and cleaned and file dressed the slotted screws to good as new.

Made some aluminium surrounds for around the cowl mountings and araldited them on and will just require some minor filling in the top tomorrow and be neater than before and look better once sprayed. It means the bolts or plactic cannot break out ever and be stronger.

More of a spacer than a clutch. I need to fabricate a drum lock. Some filing to do then.

I'm sure you will use the old clutch plates to make a holding tool.

I don't think you can use the old friction plates and you need to use the toothed spacer ones which are totally reuseable. I have been looking at videos and they have some alloy ones that you bolt to the outer casing. I have plenty of time between now and next year. :ukm:

Avanti seem to sell a neat one: http://www.avantiraceparts.co.uk/shop.php?id=3&cat=7
This clutch hub and basket holding tool is so simple yet so effective. Made from solid Delrin, a very tough plastic, it bolts into the clutch cover holes and locks both the clutch centre hub and basket in place, allowing easy assembly and disassembly of the clutch. Because it's made of plastic, it won't scratch your case or clutch hub and basket either! Includes grade 8.8 mounting bolts too.

I've not used one of those before but I've read horror stories of people using that type of holder and breaking the crankcase as its not strong enough to cope with the forces required.

Use the old steel plates to hold the drum. Line them up and drill some holes to bolt them together then bolt a bar to them to hold it steady. That nut is much easier to get undone with an air gun

I saw this one but says made of composite which I take is recycled battery plastics etc. Maybe worth a cheap punt as it has a built in damper in the plastic.

I would like to make one if I had some spare spacer rings to use but my spacers are not being drilled because they are fine and within tolerance. Not spending money on plates and spacers as they are another £50 plus to the bill.

Seat brackets now remade in steel as per original spec as near as dam it with the kink in to make the seat cowl sit flush with the seat. Once coloured zinc plated will all look good.

Slob kindly sent me a bolt for the footrest. Its not quite the right size Allen key hole but it will at least remind me that this one has an earth connected to the back with a nut so make sure you don't try undoing without removing it first like I did.

I was at work today so made a detour to see Kato for a number of reasons.

Good to catch up as always
He graciously GAVE me a pair of early front discs suitable for my 900 as 1 was odd.
I so wanted to see this Hybrid Monster bike.

Got there just as Moto GP was about to start so rude not to accept the sofa a dog companion ( that allegedly farts ) and a cup of tea.
Was quite weird sitting with Rossi's greatest fan and him winning ;):D.. Great race though to the end.

Out to see this lightweight bike and wow it certainly is light and dripping in goodies we can only dream about. I cant wait to see it running around somewhere and boy if its that light it should handle well.

Anyhow I got gifted these front discs by Kato :hail: and really appreciate it as it helps me make it at least look right with that odd front. Now the only down side was they were well grubby and needed cleaning up as also covered in Knight Racing orange paint spatter over 2 sides.
Not perfect by anyone's means but you know me and like to clean up cr4p components to as new.

So got back to work and got home around 5pm and Caroline went out on a hens do so best get in the garage and attack them.

1 hour later they are at least respectable and need minor flattening levelling around the bolting holes before a good respray. I must make sure the holes are cleaned out too as paint can flake in those places but there is plenty of meat left and no distortion.

Does anyone know a good colour match paint offhand similar to brembo colour.

Before cleaning. Note the orange tinge.

I have the number 859 for the BMW Solid Gold..

Not sure if that is a BS or what, definatly not a RAL, but if you go to an automotive paint establishment and ask for BMW Solid Gold 859, they will be able to cross reference if neccesary and mix the right stuff.

As you probably know, most of the paint suppliers can mix it and put it in an aerosol for around the twelve quid mark, depending on the mix....reckon an aerosol should just about do a couple of carriers....Good luck with the masking..:chuckle:

Hi Albie.
Made it into the garage with a tape measure this afternoon:
The 'Ducati' decal at the back of the seat cowl is 100mm wide.
The cowl is all curves, but the bottom edge of the decal is 30mm up from the rear edge of the cowl, measured centrally using a steel tape with the end of the tape hooked over the edge of the cowl.
This is the original cowl on my '94 m900 with '93 date stamp moulded into the underside and what I believe to be original paint as it still has the supplying dealer's 'Murayama' decals too.

Question 1. There is a tap on the oil feed line from crankcase to cooler. Is this an on/off for a purpose. No carb heaters on this one.

There isn't on either of mine.

Correction There isn't one on my Japanese first registered '94 m900, but there is on my UK first registered '93 m900 to feed carb heaters.

If the cowl is ready painted red and with correct decal would still be interested mate. I don't know about tricky as the owner declined to get back so abandoned that idea. She may still have or may have moved it on.

Tons of work to do though as this is almost preparatory work. Look out for some good stock exhausts chamfered or not is ok but need cheap as little money.

So tonight after a plan to try and gently sand blast this 2 pack gloss metallic with gold fleck lexus painted cambelt covers which sort of failed I went down the route of getting a satin black finish paint from Halfords along with some gold for the brakes and a primer for the bare metal.
The reason I wanted rid of paint was purely to get to the plastic and just keep them clean but I actually think they look good now but how will they last is the question.

I keyed them back and the one that took the blasting I had to flatten right back to plastic but I could not do that to the rest as too many shapes and nooks and crannies.
They have had about 3-4 light coats and can have a long time curing as no need for them for months so will be stowed away safely.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150629_175859.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150629_175859.jpg.html)

Headlight bowl was an odd colour too and had a few scratches that looked like painted over. So a rub down and rust preventer primer a couple of coats and then the same satin black for a couple of coats. Looks good now with no dents either. That also can get put away a cure for some months.

Next the job which tbh I wasn't looking forward too of masking the brake discs to repaint as good as possible.
Cleaned them as good a I could and so far have only masked the one as ran out of masking tape. Surprising how much one disc asks for. The basic masking is simple enough but its the having to cut around the rivets with a knife as close to the disc as possible without stopping the painting hitting the disc.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150629_191138.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150629_191138.jpg.html)

I got this as the best match I could find. I will not remove masking until I think its good enough colour match but looks alright against another painted disc.

Well I have been busy and getting stuff done slowly and patiently and although I couldn't get her going again to do the oil pressure test at home I decided what the hell its coming out and will be on its way via Proteam Ducati to his mate Simon who is a ex Moto GP engine builder for Kevin Schwantz so he knows about engines. Scott also used him too so is recommended.

Well a catch up is the brake discs are still in tape but gold but not sure if colour I desire as I see them with a little more yellow in the gold. Don't get me wrong they are shiney and the picture doesn't do justice.

The suspension hoop also has had another can of colour this time Fiat Broom Yellow and at first it looked lighter but then went more deeper and warmer and its still nothing like the Ohlins which is seeming to almost be orange in reality. I am leaving it there and see later. It needs 2 stainless rose joints to be ordered.

I also have one odd old exhaust. Hard to tell as Ducati logos are old school but one is made by Sil Motor and one by Lafranchi. If anyone has a swap let me know.

But most of the scuffs are gone but still got to dress up the aluminium and make them look good. A set of Termis will still be on the cards later as that's allowed in my book as long as I have stock too.

Last night after the epic non start fail I started the undoing of the rest of the components and exhaust came off in minutes and headers are clean and polished. I saw there is no clamp on the rear so need one of them.
The loom was removed as far as I could go and was left ready for tonights big drop.

So after dropping off oil pressure gauge to Al he lent me the engine trolley to help drop it out and it helps him to pick it up to get to his guy Simon.

Drained the oil as best I could but someone has mullered and rounded the sump plug so drained as best I could via the filter plug and found some interesting looking copper glitter which I guess shows some damage.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150702_180914.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150702_180914.jpg.html)

And then the 2 bolts removed to drop an 1" or so and then I could remove the front end from the frame.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150702_195117.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150702_195117.jpg.html)

So to sum up.
All is good and carbs look dirty grubby and grimey but all good. The front forks are faded but no damage , I need a 14 mm key to undo axle and clean that up still.
The steering stop adjuster has stripped the thread in the bottom yoke so will either get both thread inserted or look at getting 2 at 10mm in size and re tap them.
The frame I will get repainted professionly not powdercoated and was thinking about doing it myself with RS paints mix as also the wheels as they are already powdercoated silver and decent to go over. save me faffing with cush joint removal too.

Just have to get all the bolts plated on the engine before it goes away so they will all be off on Monday morning with the hoses and brackets.

Oh and another down side ... I received my log book tonight . NOT a 93 but a 94 of February 1994. Slightly disappointed but still an L reg.

Embarrassingly done bugger all on mine as planned as been faffing about with the new car but at least it's been used and I'll start this winter

Well I hope at least with the draw marks as standard. I guess I am breaking through the anodising and it's hard too. These may not work out as desired but if not they will have to be polished and dulled down.

I have polished silencers from a 750 on mine...You might have seen them at the weekender?

I didn't de-anodise these ones myself, but I have had to re-finish them to try and get rid of the rippling.
The PO used a polishing mop to get the anodising off. The trouble with that (and other methods) is that when you break through the hard surface you dig a hole in the soft bit, or at least until the whole surface is free of anodise.

Keep the surface flat by using a DA (dual action) Or random orbital sander...Or just an orbital sander. keep the pad flat on the surface at all times. Keep it moving, and work in biggish overlapping circles....Mask the stainless ends before starting in case of slips with the rough stuff....As to what grade abrasive to use, you will have to experiment...I would be tempted to start with 180 wet-n-dry, dry, or emery. But if it scratches too deeply it will take too long at the polishing stage..Would pay to work up the grades anyway, once all the anodise is off.

As to letting it dull...Mine soon go cloudy if I don't keep on them with the Autosol...and they mark very easily with any water splashes...So no worries about being dazzled..!

Oh, and why are you mucking about with farty Ford Goldish paint??...I gave you the match..:fou:..:chuckle:

Your right but I couldn't find any off the shelf BMW solid gold. I will do as I got them up against the correct ones of the front end now its all apart. So I may have to get some made up.

Its all going to plan and started bagging stuff after cleaning and cleaned all the joints on the oil lines and hydraulic lines to be plated for spare ( you never know if you will one day want them ) and the elbows are looking decent again.

Fuel pump was looking pretty filthy on the aluminium side but the plated side is ok and although I thought about getting it redone that means another gasket to buy. Its all good now and removed the spring sheaths on carb hoses as well for plating again.
Forks removed and axle cleaned up and very few marks and chrome is good so tomorrow the bottom legs can be cleaned up and refreshed too. Its a shame the anodising is so pale almost not there but maybe one day they will get redone but will investigate in the meantime just in case.

The wheels now disc and sprocket free are going to be refinished and I do think they may have be sprayed as there is some feint silver spray on one tyre edge and there is some edges near the centre where paint has come off. I will again do a test rub down to see whether these wheels are painted silver and what colour was underneath.

I have discovered that although its barely a 1994 bike that was probably made in 1993, the frame was replaced around 1995 as to the frame number period but the wheels have elephant too and something else that may pin point a reason to frame change and not under warranty is when I removed and started cleaning the top yoke underneath was a cast in date of 95.
This says to me maybe a accident and smacked the frame and top yoke and one odd exhaust. Back then the Monster 900 was expensive to buy so as why write it off.

This is all just my thoughts and making things more understandable.
I also noticed the ignition mount plate looked wonky on where the latch goes a tad so that's now tweaked.

I think my worst thing to get back nice is the carbs but I am going to remove the brackets to get plated for sure and the rest just clean by hand and do as little as possible. I may need to source some fresh hose that's about 15mm diameter and probably the new fuel line to pump etc. It looks ok but better now than later.

I was going to remove the brake caliper bolts that hold them together but 3 attempts led me to back off and leave well alone. Not the best result but better than having to strip and rebuild and cut them or drill them out so will tidy up and carefully paint.

But most of the scuffs are gone but still got to dress up the aluminium and make them look good. A set of Termis will still be on the cards later as that's allowed in my book as long as I have stock too.

It may have the chamfer Albie, but it's still a pretty early exhaust can as it doesn't mention the m600 in its text about type approval.

As I had a wedding of my stepdaughter time was limited to yesterday morning only and this afternoon as was raining.

Mostly cleaning and stuff but made a copy of tank prop tonight thanks to Darkness for sizes. It will work and needs plating and will have heat shrink on the end not the PVC cable cover. I just need the rubber end for it.

Bottom yoke tank stop was removed and hope I get Big Oz to ally weld a plug or fill loose stripped hole with weld and re=tap it. The stud is salvageable and allen key hole good and thread had an M8 die ran up it.
Just will need naturalising again as the top yoke.

Forks are in great order except pale anodise and will bring back the lowers to finish this week. All components are not damaged and seals new. Will change fork oil on refitting.

Air box was cleaned inside and out and air filter looks very new serviceable part. Probs get a K&N later. I do need a replacement long hose as the ends short and damaged so if anyone has dumped a filter box can I purchase a decent one.

I was well excited to get home tonight armed with paint cans and masking tape and a nice warm afternoon .
Couldn't get the rear wheel rubbed down and masked quick enough..

Before I did though I did the front and 2 coats of black. Its a bit too matte so will be over lacquered in a couple of days but the paint went on beautifully.

Then the rear was done and that also had 2 good coats and looks so much better now.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150706_183819.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150706_183819.jpg.html)

I found a gold that I am much happier with and its a very close match to the Brembo calipers and its actually brass. Its made by plasticote and enamel.

Throttle control housing is cleaned and freshly painted. Never saw the elephant until today and it may also need a lacquer.

I decided I can use my newish looking gold bar ends and disguise them in black gloss plasticote. I may need to get a couple of inserts turned up to a size to be able to fit some countersunk screws in the end as the original ones.

I then started to check out the oil cooler. Its in good shape overall but scabby paint but not much I cant sort out with care and some good paint.

They are everywhere. On the wheels too.

Can I ask a question on the wiring around the starter cabling to a relay. There is a relay that's been wired into it and no connector but there has been a piece cut in, Does yours have some kind of connector and what does it look like so I can replace it. Its 2 cables.

I found out tonight from Pedro that the wheels should be Gloss Black not satin. As it goes that's a result as the shop had gloss black in abundance so that's what they will be tomorrow night.

After sitting outside on a not so warm night and a shower I was fettling all the flaking paint off the oil cooler. No damage to be concerned about anywhere and the blocked veins were cleared very carefully with hot water and a small cable tie fed through in and back and washed constantly and flushed again and again.

Just a little more degreasing and picking in areas under the brackets and can have a light respray over the veins and more on the casing.

Disaster struck the paint. The same manufacturer of paint in gloss reacted with crazing in a few places. Not given up them and will strip and powder coat.

Albie
09-07-2015, 07:21 PM
Thought about stuff all day and last night was looking into removing cush drives. I got home with an open mind to continue the black paint, I rubbed down the crazing and actually the rear wheel turned out not so bad in the end but I could have improved it better and that's where the could have stays as the front I did the same and then painted the back. The cast spoke bodys crazed up and that was enough for me to say lets get stopped and do these properly.
Ok so bearings removed front and rear. One of the fronts is smooth as new and one was like a ratchet. Bothe rears although they were rusty in the bores were smooth but will be replacing all 4.
I will also get the spacers replated as they are now out.
Finished the oil cooler in a nicer silver and looks very good now and also rubbed down the black horn and is now painted silver too.

I said earlier I was studying the search forum for removal and also spoke to Scrapps today for advice as he changed some last year or so ago.
It worked to a degree as removed the centre and the outers would not come out at all. Nothing left for me to do than try drilling the rubbers out and had a go at trying to get behind the outer so it would bend in and possibly come out. So far no joy and given up for tonight.

I think its dremel time to thin the inside wall down to almost collapse and then they can go off for powdercoat and if the costs ok will do also the rear hoop as paint is not as robust.

So now costings are going up with a pair of tyres and powdercoat and bearings and cush drives.
Theres £300 in one hit.

Needed.
Tyres x 2
Wheel bearings x 4
Steering bearings x 2
Cush drives x 6
Throttle cables x 2 push and pull
Brake pads front and rear
Braided black complete full lines and clutch
Clutch plates
Frame painting and seat cowl
Wheels and suspension hoop and levers powdercoated
All plating of parts
Parts to be shotblasted and naturalised foot pegs and hangers and fork yokes and brake hanger .

After the epic FAIL in even getting 1 cush drive out yesterday and drilling the centres out after giving up. I cleared the rubber out as good as possible and tried the dremel attack but wasn't getting very far and ended up pushing one further down.
Got my engineering head on and watched a video and couldn't quite see how he was getting them out but I realised that there is a gap about 8mm at the bottom. If I could somehow get something to expand under and slidehammer it would be easy. I did think about making a tool but that's madness when you want them out now but if the idea helps others I am happy.
I got a long M10 bolt so the head would sit under the bottom of the cush drive. 2 side by side would fit so I needed something to pack the difference and used a socket and then retained it with a couple of strong washers and a nut. With that holding firm I could then attack from the rear through the disc brake side and had a nice surface area to tap through. A few sharp drifts and they all came out and they annoyingly were clean as a whistle but I had to finish the first one with a hacksaw and gradually lever it out. Some minor damage will clean up ok but finally they can be get given to specialists to apply a good finish.

After a little progress over the weekend generally cleaning more parts from the bike and finding some old parts that may be useful if I cannot easily repair threads on lock stop on lower yoke as I have a 1997 one to hand in A1 condition.

The parts bucket is now full and piled in as many useful bolts and nuts and washers I could clean up in case they help out. I also managed to get the correct size hanger bolt for free as to the one Slob kindly donated to me but larger hole. It will still get re-plated and be offered to anyone who needs one as a freebie.

I have coming a nice pair of throttle cables from ebay to replace my usable but tired coating ones. I may also have a better pair of early exhausts tonight for £20-25 if Mart64 manages to do a deal that will need less work than mine to clean up but I will still finish them as these ones will be M600 ones. I do believe they will fit the same if not I will have pair for sale soon. All the rod ends should arrive shortly and have already got the steering ones here. Just need the wheel ones and cush drive ordered.

This afternoon I got Al from Pro Team Ducati asking if and when he should piclk up my engine to go to the hospital of engines in Surrey. I said after work I will drop it in so lifted the unit into the back of my car and dropped it down. My original plan was to get all the bolts plated before but tbh it doesn't matter really as it will be stripped, assessed and works carried out and then will come back to Al and then I can paint and get bolts off to plating and then will go back to Al for further service work ie belts and he can tighten it all up when all fresh.

It may be 1 -2 months for the engine work which gives me time to get frame painted and wheels done but they are due to be taken in 2 weeks time. So around a month turnaround back to me.

It also gives me time to build my bike table for rebuilding them on. I already have the frame cut and just need some plates welded on the U section so it can be bolted and unbolted if needed and can work on top of my bike lift to lower it down at a sensible height for the ramp to be used.
I just need to figure out a wheel chock or clamp system to keep a bike steady once rolling.

Can someone with an early monster show me a pic of the righthand side around the side panel area at what I believe to be some round unit possibly a fuel tap. Cannot make it out properly but I have a bracket there to what a ss fuel tap has been poorly attached by bending at 90 degrees.

Sounds like the fuel filter mounting. There's a tab on the frame that holds a rubber mount for the filter itself.

Did they not have one inboard then. Interesting. I need to check the tank inside. These early bikes have lots of quirky stuff fitted different.

I got some better exhausts for £25 I think the price paid but no pics yet.

Ah this but needs a rubber surround then

Take a look at the Stein Dinse web site.

They have the '93 parts book which shows what was fitted, but the gummi halter is out of stock at the moment.

I have a fuel filter bolted under the tank and is new looking. I will just mount the tap more professionally and be done there.
I have the exhausts , well Mart64 has them and all good apparently and seen the pics . I struck gold there so have a pair of early logo ones for spare or sale if needed.

So tonight with more room now to swing the cat I started tidying and organising all my parts and bagging as much as I could and went through all the plating and found some more that I missed too. I will be spending the next few nights cleaning the brake calipers and removing the guide pins for plating if poor.
Found many more elephants even on the rubber tie straps .

Enjoying this project very much now and I also got my rose joints but had to search high and low for one of the bushes you need to reuse.

Well I thought they may clean up with some good cleaner as generally were not too bad but they had patches of grot here and there and the bottoms were badly stained black. I did clean them up as best as I could prior to making a decision but firstly I stripped the pins out and found 2 of them had no pin clip in them. I cleaned up all 3 of the sliding pins for plating and cleaned up the spring clips too but obviously the main ones are stainless anyhow, The smaller one needed a good wire wheel dressing .
The pads are good at least and the pistons went back freely. As I said before I would have like to have plated and cleaned the caliper bolts but I never again tried to undo them.

After a bit of cleaning still not great

So having some very similar colour enamel paint I attempted a bit more of a clean up firstly on the rear caliper and very pleased with the result.

Then on to the front one and the comparison is good.

I have just completed the final front one and they are looking very decent now. The paints quick drying but will possibly give another light coat and let it cure for a week or so before rubbing back the lettering of BREMBO and then lacquer them over and once fitted back with new fittings will be good again. Its a shame about the bolts but at least they are not rusty.

Coming along nicely!!! You have been busy whilst I have been away messing on 'other' bikes. I've got my heads back so will have to crack on with mine again. Still sorting the VFR for now as that is easier and the every day rider at the mo'.

Your engine looks very clean, had it been repainted? And damn you and your easily removed engine bolts...

Funny how the older original members seem to be getting 93/94 bikes...

If you remember 11 years ago we were contemplating swapping tanks etc. It's full circle. Engines been repainted poorly and cheaply and will be cleaned and redone once engine sorted.

So we are 8 weeks in now and bikes coming along slower now but very pleasing.

Today I cleaned the exhausts I got from Gumtree for £25 and they look really decent and even the scrape isn't so bad.
Here is before

And now with a tiny bit of cleaner and removed the brackets too before. and a little file of the burr on the scrape.

Cannot remember off my head. No bible to check at work. Mine also has the aluminium clip not that I can't swap for a new black Ss one early monster. Presuming that it's had a drop in its life. Later year top yoke. Frame from around 94/95 , 1 different exhaust maker, brake reservoir changed. Just presuming tank got stuffed too.

I only done some finish off silly stuff tonight but it may be helpful to some who have older monsters with the front extensions and the pins break. I did post a while ago of what I did but tonight I fitted 2 black number plate screws and dremelled off the heads on the inside level and they work brilliantly.

This afternoon I popped into a local powder coater with a sample of a colour which is so very close to the original paint. He reckons he can do my frame and is now trying to get a colour match the same but with a matt or a satin finish as the sample was gloss. He is also going to shotblast my other parts when doing the frame if I am obviously satisfied with the colour sample. Getting excited about having a frame all finished in the right colour.

I bought one of those thinking it would be easier (one-handed) to use. The very first time I used it, it snapped like a carrot. Didn't even get close to the required torque - what a load of old ****.

I stick to the old-fashioned proper tool now.

I am sceptical the same. I think before I ever use it I will cut up a couple of plates and drill through to reinforce before hand.. TBH I doubt if I will have to use it now as engine is being professionally rebuilt.

Tonight I was more tidying the garage up than cleaning parts because I have to make room for a bike build table I am building. Rearranging tools in places where access is better etc and rebagging finished parts.
I am hoping that I have a few new secondhand parts coming to me soon that will be a godsend. I have cleaned up the headers on mine which are poor underneath but am expecting to replace and will hopefully restore the other exhausts to sell on complete. I took some pics of the complete system and looks really decent. I never expected to be pleased with a stock exhaust system ever.

These were just grubby Gumtree silencer bargains I got for £25 . I am hoping to replace the headers for better. It all seems worth the effort. I love restoring.

Just an update on the fact that now't happening in the garage other than its now organised and has space to build. No news on the powdercoat colour yet but will be checking that out tomorrow as I have a piece of correct colour tube to hand.
Wheels are off to powdercoat and tyres removed and binned and looking for a reasonable pair of tyres but not 180 this time as the side of tyre was hitting chain and chunked it so 170 it will be as OEM.
So Lukas has saved my bacon by providing me with a decent header system and clamp and that infamous ubber container cup so have spent even more money getting a filter to fit. Most grateful to him for that.
Ordered from Germany care of Stein Dinse 3 brake dust cover bellows (2 for somebody else ) a early tank clip as mine is a nice alloy but wrong one so that will be for sale as new and a fresh 90 elbow and seal for the rear brake and a pair of washer dampers for the front indicators. That little lot is £50 nearly but is a necessity.

One thing I was hoping to address is the lettering on the switchgear. Thought about letraset but that's probs a no go.

I missed out on an early tank with correct fuel cap because I thought it would go silly money and definitely would have if I had got involved. If anyone has an early dented tank let me know and also a early tank cap with and elephant. I have a very nice one I can use to swap.
I am now decided plating has to go away now rather than when engine comes back as I hear its not gone anywhere as yet so the remaining bolts will be sent at a later date and will have to bear the cost. But I can then sub assemble again.

That's all my news and no pics today.

Show me photo of your fuel cap maybe you will want to swap for elephant one lol if I like it. Mind you my cap is PC black.

Also post pictures of those rubbers you were looking for?

I have this one which is spare and I could powdercoat.

Or a decent one really not needing powdercoating at all and would be sacrilege.

The rubbers I need are the general tea tray H section there are 2 sizes and need both but just to replace a few chewed ones like the indicators and breather container. I need the breather pipes frome the oil breather and airbox as ends chewed off. Also a few rubber cable ties. I annoyingly gave some away a few years back.

I need one rubber for the footrest hanger too. They are the ones which have the big bolts through.

I got another 2 pieces for the bike and the frame swatch in Satin finish today.

My sprocket washer was decidedly toothless so this was £2,25 ebay and cheaper than new.

Also the piece de resistance in mocking up the LOOK with the rubber cup. A pair of hoses going nowhere will connect just for show and as these are £16 each I will retain usage of the £6 ones fitted under the tank.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150806_182328.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150806_182328.jpg.html)

The colour plate confirms to me powdercoat is happening in a few weeks time. It feels right and looks good and still has that metallic shine in it. Its actually very hard to photograph against the original tube and that paint has had white primer removed and lost some colour sheen over the years. At £110 its a no brainer to me.

Plating is going away end of the week. I just had to quickly make a bracket I noticed on the interweb which isn't in my box of bits so a check on Stein-dinse manual shows it rarely available and a good pic to copy.

That's now in the huge box of overdone stuff to be plated but you pay for a batch. Was hoping to get the exhaust ring clamp to do but not yet arrived. That will go later on in another lot instead.

Picked up some Monster paddock stands today purchased from Sven in Belgium. really decent too and look very stable indeed. I like the idea of the front one too where it goes in through the bottom holes in the front forks. Narrow too so no wasted space there. I am thinking of getting them powdercoated again with the frame the same colour but need a price first or just leave them red.

Very little to get now and just done a deal on the bar ends from QBA so sorts that one out. I may try and get a spare fuel lid machined with the elephant one I am looking out for. Seems like its my only option other than Lukas swapping.

I was going to buy an early Yellow tank I saw but then the pics underneath put me right off. Would need a lot of work to undo the work it looked like it had had. Poor indeed.

Switchgear now better after using the top half of a 748 unit which is the same. Other unit now back on ebay . I was 100 % about keeping the yellow horn button and kept the complete bottom end . Elephant on it.

Another part found and being replaced is I got a very nice looking early tank cap from sadly the USA but at a very reasonable price of $35 plus post so albeit £40 I have at least got a decent one for sale. I know its being anorak but I reckon the tank got replaced with another as well as the fuel cap. Its right now and all that matters. As much as I possibly could have got the one or two I have engraved it wont be an original one and may have needed coating too.

Tonight I dropped all the plating off nr Heathrow and should be done by next weekend all shiney and coloured zinc. My mate was glad I said as he was thinking it was bright zinc plate colour ie silver. Luckily he wasn't shocked by the amount I had for him and said its better to do more than little.

Got up really early this morning at 6.00 and cracked on with stuff as needed to make a bracket or at this time try and see if the bracket would work, to mount the fuel tap that's on the bike. Its off an ss by the look and has so far come in handy when removing the tank so if it looks ok and not so out of place I can use it . At first I was considering getting BigOz to weld the bracket on the filter bracket but thinking long term I think better if removable so I drilled and tapped an m5 hole in the other bracket and will use a better functional and in keeping bolt and not the one shown. The tap is then screwed on to the bracket with M5 screws. The tap turns towards the front on so will be clear at 90 degrees.
I think it looks ok even trying to keep the bike looking purist but will be powdercoated the same as the frame to blend in.

Next whilst the weather was throwing it down I started doing the ex-Lukas header system to bring it back to decent condition. What started as looking down right dirty started to show some areas that wont clean up without serious work. I am pleased so far and very very grateful to have another system without the bad grounding but even this one has had what looks like at least one but nowhere near as bad.
It started like this

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150823_104324.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150823_104324.jpg.html)

A bit of elbow grease and wire wheel and looking respectable

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150824_112744.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150824_112744.jpg.html)

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150824_112642.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150824_112642.jpg.html)

The worst is at the front down pipe but was also similar on my other one where stones throw up and I literally had to file off the surface as was like charcoal .

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150824_112707.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150824_112707.jpg.html)

The nastiest bit is that someone actually has welded a set of exhaust to these headers in its past in 4 places per outlet. I am going to try and fix this with some help hopefully from BigOz as to whether the areas can be welded across and re dressed or I get some rings made to cover tightly and just tack to the underneath and rear. I dressed them a little around an exhaust but again not a major issue.

One on left is old headers exit and the left is one I am using.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20150824_112726.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20150824_112726.jpg.html)

The clamps cleaned up nicely but will have to use a Nut and Bolt to clamp as thread has gone. Not paying £27 for a new one.

The finish on exhaust will only get better and this is stage 1 so I will persevere best I can.

Big Oz came to my rescue tonight welding 2 minor cracks about 5mm long on the tank mount plate . Just in case really before powder coat tomorrow. Also did a weld on the fuel tap bracket with captive nuts for ease of fixing.

We have a plan to restore the header outlet shields by slipping some 42mm copper pipe between and then welding the stainless to a suitable repair and dressing it neatly. Have to repair the clamp too with some new stainless bar drilled to take an M8 bolt and be re-welded on. He is an absolute star that man and is going to try also and salvage my original lower yoke as the lock stop thread is baggy as hell and needs more metal in it. He is going to attempt that one at his leisure. I left him with a nice jug of Scrumpy to try.

Taking the Ducati weighted bar ends I got from QBA last week to get a fresh coat too as had grazes on one. I did drill the bottom out and tapped M8 so they could hang them up rather than thread them through a hole.

Well a 3 day away from home getting the frame done at Redditch and whilst I was there I got the rear wheel done again because somehow it got chipped in 3 places .
How pleased am I ?
Very pleased tbh as it was an unknown other than a sample but having picked it up and getting it home its great and the finish is great. Masked up properly and frame number still visible but I have to decide on how I finish that bit. Masked also on bearings and frame bolt exits.
When you put the cut off frame piece its close so that's all that matters. Price was £90 plus the VAT so if your interested give Porl or David a call.

I was unsure but did the footrest hangers in silver as were blacked. If I want can go back to natural but were only £20 to do and will stop the weather. Look nice with fittings though.

Got to order some wheel bearings.
Cush drive inserts
1 hanger rubber insert and 6 new damper washers for airbox parts and 4 new E clips for footrest pivot pins.

Hi Albie: you're making steady progress, so keep up the good work.

I'm especially interested in the powder coat on the frame as I haven't decided whether to do mine yet (I may keep the "patina")?

I haven't seen an elefant on the underside of a footpeg before, but it's not an easy spot on the bike.

Was that one of the rubber coated ones?

Yes I since found out they are and we're original fitment and could have left them be. Yesterday I sat a picked the remaining rubber off as shot blasting and burning wouldn't. Took about another hour. Had my frame gold I may have lived with it. Mines nice now and all will look nice but without much patina. Leave yours be if you can and wait to see how mine is viewed. It's bound to cause comment but you know me I would instantly get it altered now I know how easy they come apart. Had someone not dithered giving me a ballpark figure for paint it would have been painted.

All looking good Albie- I'd be interested in the frame colour match too as been told by several people they can't get the kind of matt finish correct despite knowing the paint code- even the 20th Anniversary bikes weren't the same.

Also, do you know when the tanks changed to without the weld around the clip?

Only ask as my '97 900 has the weld- no elephant on the fuel cap though!!

You need to pull that headlight apart though and clean the glass from the inside as they seem to suffer from clouding but it makes a world of difference to light output when clean.

In Practical Sportbikes this months article on the early M900 it says that they had elephants stamped everywhere because the bike was originally going to be a Cagiva, I don't know how true that is, my Supersport had the Elephants too. I can't remember if my 748 did, I don't know where the original fuel cap is but by '97 TPG had taken over from Cagiva anyway but some bikes may have gone out with the Cagiva logos? Who knows.

No bikes went out badged as Cagiva and although TGP invested in Ducati at the end of '96 they didn't fully take over until '99/2000 when the logo officially changed to the one used now.

They had to have a complete re-branding as the Castiglioni brothers held (and still hold)the copyright to the old font which is why you won't get very much official Ducati merchandise using it- I presume they came up with a deal to use it on the 20th Anniversary bikes and a few items of clothing but the majority of it all dates back to the '70's and earlier.

My '97 900 has a generous smattering of Elephants (which must be a trademark of Cagiva) over it although not as many as the very early bikes.

Re the seam on the tank...Not sure if you have painted the tank yet, nor whether you intend to. But I am thinking it should be possible to "fake" the seam in question by tacking a carefully made one on (BigOz springs to mind)....A bit of crafty blending with filler and you'ld never know..

HA ha ha I've put the idea in your head now.....Bad Gazza...:nash::chuckle::chuckle:

Yea, I know. The Elephant is a Cagiva trademark. I just think maybe PS got it slightly wrong and assumed the Elephants were to indicate the Monster was going to be badged a Cagiva when it was really just to indicate Cagiva branding and what parts they had paid to manufacture on all the bikes SS/748.916 etc at that time.

I think most Ducatis of the day do. My 916 has Elephants on various parts, including the frame...

No will leave the tank alone. Its fine and technically wrong. Maybe one day will replace. Seen a yellow one that needs work on bottom for £125 but need penny's for engine building.

Flip I reckon about 98 on as my 97 had the seam as I recall. Yes will try and de-fog the light sometime.

Did some work today. Quite a bit really and purely a test of bolt fitment to places and getting parts together to stay complete. Nothing loctited or tight as yet.

Betterer and betterer.

Another quick observation (You'll be getting lots of helpful comments as she reassembles) is that you've placed the forks lower in the yokes than standard.

The Showa non-adjustable forks had about 10mm of the gold anodised fork leg visible above the top yoke, so that would be a good starting point when setting up the suspension geometry.

That's unless you still remember where you were on your old one of course?

Yes tbh just there like that to put stuff together. Have piccies of that and a fade line to use. My hardest job today is making sure I put rectifier and fuel pump fittings correctly.

er....seat cowl brackets...
Blimey Albie, you've gone the extra mile there.
You've even put in the little strengthening "dink" halfway along the outer bend.
Let me guess ...You put a length of softwood 2x2 in the vice, rested the bracket over one corner and hit it with a rounded-off chisel ....?
Then probably had to tweek the bend as the angle would have shifted slightly.
Full marks and two stars (one red, one gold).

I didn't bother myself ...my ally ones are sans "dink".
And redundant now as it happens cos my Corbin seat (your old one, actually) is now a permanent and cowl-less feature.

Pedro

Just another observation Albie....

Looking at your brake discs, you should clean off the paint on the inner face where they bolt to the wheel, same goes for the wheel face if there is any powder coat overspray. The bolts holding the discs on don't really provide much resistance to the disc turning on the wheel, the friction between clean faces on disc and wheel bear the majority of the braking load. You may also find that the paint causes the disc to not run true.

Hats off to your masking up though, much better than my last effort!!

Yes I removed pretty much all from the back of disc yesterday so just a stain there now. Got the loom in roughly and the rectifier as I think it should go. Mines got an extra bracket so it mounts in a triangle as the bolt holes don't line up where you expect. I think it's another parts bin adaption. Take a picture later for discussion. Figured out starter relay wires and are too long . It's been replaced and badly wired in so I can lose 4" of wiring and whack a connector in there.

Had an issue with front wheel bearings. Now this comes to light after I order said complete set of bearings from a reputable motorcycle parts trader and not Ebay and when opened they are narrower by 4mm than ones I took out. Funny as I used the specific drop down box related to my model type and year.
So I do a engine search and not only on here but elsewhere there should be an extra 2 in the digits to make its width 16mm.

So the solid axle m900 93
Front Wheel bearings are pt number 62203-2RS 17 x 40 x 16 against what they supply you 6203-RS 17 x 40 x 12
Rear are 6204-2RS C3
Sprocket carrier are 6005-2RS C3

Now I made a complaint to Wemoto and straight away an apology and helpful and correct ones on order for the 8th with correct width and number. I did this complaint purely to make sure they know their systems number is incorrect. I will send mine back on return.
I sorted out my rear light loom where a couple of bad ends were repaired and some sheathing done at socket end. Also the starter relay cable has been shortened and had a connector plug added and is tidy now. Just working on the frame number trying to tidy it up with some paint after trimming around the edge of powdercoat. Trying to find a paint close to match but not done thickly. I thought I got a close match with some Revell model paint but the lid colour matches not the paint. I could try mixing with another colour but tbh I couldn't care if it were matt black or even silver as long as the number is visible.

Gear lever assembly arrived today at Argos depot. Opened said box and very pleased with secondhand purchase.
Got it home and good look over it and the bearings were/are good but I have brand new ones going back on. The lever was slightly bent but would have been usable as was but straight in the vice with soft jaws and a gentle tweak and straight again with no scars.
I used the slightly later adjuster rod because not only was it straight it also had the handy spanner flats and a nicer condition all over.
Now all back on the hanger ready to be fitted soon.
£27 all in wasn't so bad really.

The Cagiva font is not so easy to get hold of from dealers now as I believe Cagiva own the copyright to it which is why you hardly ever see genuine Ducati merchandise using it these days.

Just want to say these decals are pretty poor and basic . I put one on a cowl and looks well erm sh1te tbh. I am ordering from Ducati for four times the price for 1 but will be better. If I had the font which was not correct totally I could have made them as well as no metallic element in it.

So after a chat with Moto Rapido about parts and stickers they inform me that no longer available BUT they use Image Works who I have used before. Moto Rapido sending me some parts this week to finish off all the detail stuff I need replacing still and will be sorting me out some exhaust half rings to replace the old ones and that odd one.

The phone call to Image Works has resulted in 2 seat cowl ones and a spare front fairing if I decide to get a carbon one later and a missing AGIP decal and hopefully the Shell Helix oil decal fro the clutch side casing. They really know their stuff regarding sizes and versions of Ducati Models and not all are the same.
I got some heat shrink sleeving through the post to repair the breather hoses I have and repair the one Utopia kindly sent me. It worked a treat and now ready to fit. I still have to shorten another spring and replate it for the top breather pipe on the carb.

The exhaust clamps are now cleaned up and had some BBQ paint applied just for now. It no doubt will burn off later but makes them decent for now and this stuff is pretty hardy.

I am now ready to give BigOz the exhaust header for him to try and cosmetically repair the ends of the shields where they were welded on to some exhausts. I got given some 42mm copper tube and it was split and slipped in between the joint. This will give BigOz a barrier to not allow the stainless weld to go further. I slightly peined the edge over as was a loose fit over the exhaust where they can flare. The worst case scenario is I could dremel cut off the first 4mm off the front and have a shorter overlap but I thought it would be interesting to see if they can be repaired with BigOz's skill.

I nearly made an error but a good error until I checked the Monster Bible by thinking my oil cooler hose was missing the plastic/rubber cover where it goes across the belt cover. I was intending to use the heat shrink I got through the post today for the breather pipe repair. BTW if you need any I bought 1m and used about 60mm and its 20mm to shrink down 50% if needed. My breather pipes were 12-13mm.
The worry I had about the oil cooler hose was the colour the braiding went when I plated the elbows coloured zinc as they were from new. I used a scotch pad on the braid and its toned down much nicer now. It was a tad too gold bling for my liking as I was hoping only the elbows would have taken the colour.

I have to take all three pieces of my yokes top and bottom ( plus a spare I have and will sell ) to vapour blasting in Sevenoaks as soon as I pick up from BigOz as he repaired the lock stop hole thread where it was a baggy fit. Then I can actually build up the bike for real with loctited nuts and bolts for real.
I am due to pick up a bike lift in the next week too which will assist me for real in life and make life that little easier and safer for my back too. Its secondhand but pretty much as new and has really only been used as a table to build on and not for maintenance. Its part of my xmas present so happy with that.
I still don't have any news regarding the engines progress but I am not too worried. Once I do have it back I need all the bolts out of it to be plated and I now have a small pile of other since acquired and had to make a second cable bracket for the left hand side and some more fittings found. I also want to replate the seat brackets as I have some letter stamps and have done them with stamps as original look.
I bought the stamps to make a frame number plate as much as I tried to mask off the number. You can still see it but I could not match the colour in the missing area so made a couple of plates and stamped the numbers on and will either be stuck or riveted on so if plod wish to remove they can and have photographic evidence. It will also stop frame frame rubbing off from the cables. I may get one podercoated at Redditch again the correct match to make it blend or use the alloy finish.

I got another secondhand seat cowl from Ducati Wolverhampton last week too. Not perfect but I wont need to repaint it for now. It has a few chips and was missing one mounting insert ( didn't describe it at well as in fact didn't describe any damage POOR POOR seller ) so I made one from half a spoke wheel nipple re-threaded M5 and used some large diameter silicone tube as a mould and filled the hole with resin glue around the nipple. I then just had to trim the top off and touch up with red paint. Its not as severe modification I had to do on the last one. It works and is just waiting for a new decal.

I have 3m of 8mm pipe coming for carb breathers and need to figure out the wrong fuel tank breather pipes as to where I route them pipes to as they have fuel pipe fitted to them and far too thick and overkill.

Thanks. Make sure you look after yours. Its so easy to make a monster how you want. Its harder to make it back to how it was. No wonder many don't even want to try. And tbh why would they when its their way that they want.

I hear you Albie . I've no intention of doing anything to her ever, I just think the original monster is a classic looking bike. Out of all the bikes I've owned I get more "nice bike mate" when im on the monster than any other bike I've ever owned.

Today life was meant to be doing the Gentlman's ride out but sadly the Scrambler was a non starter for the second time since I fitted a power take off lead in May. Anyhow the situation turned out for the better as I went to pick up a bike lift table. Got it home ok in the estate car but very heavy to lift out on your own. I wont be needing the wheel stop and clamp for a while whilst building off some paddock stands but will at least eliminate back ache.

Yesterday saw a few jobs done as in cush drive bushes pressed in, some bolts fitted now with washers and spring washers, fitted the replacement spacer thing in the front brake switch, fitted the 2 missing O rings and washers in the gear shift and rear brake pedal pivots.

I removed the 2 bearings from the sprocket drive unit and decided its going also to be vapour blasted this week along with yokes. Its having a nice new Renthal sprocket fitted and new chain so best make use of the service to restore good as.

Then I made a repair to the long air box breather hose which had been split and gnawed back by someone in the past. Could not get another one the same so went about it to repair as best as I could without too much obvious signs.
I cut the pipe back a couple of inches and then inserted a piece of thin tube pretty much the same diameter as the bore about 50mm long and then wrapped some rubber around to same diameter. Then I used the 20mm diameter heat shrink over the top like a bandage and was a tight fit and slid over with soapy water. Then heated it with a hair dryer to a tight fit and dry the water out. Looks ok now.

Big thumbs up for BigOz for his welding skills and being a top bloke. I picked my welded lower yoke up on Monday evening and dropped off my exhaust header system.
He had filled the damaged stripped thread with weld and as soon as I got home I measured and drilled and tapped again M8. That meant that yesterday all those parts went to vapour blasting in Sevenoaks at TSR vapour blasting.

I was shocked last night when BigOz posted pics of the header as I said no rush mate its fine. He has done I can only imagine it already or partly but has filled in the missing pieces where the welding had previously been torn from someone who tacked exhausts to the header.
I will polish it all up after but I reckon he has made a great job of it and saved me from possibly having to have accepted the look or cutting it back 4-5mm.

We have a plan for the making of a bracket for the ohlins remote as he has a plate roller like a mini mangle so we reckon that's not going to be hard to do. Its more the point of steel or aluminium.
I got a delivery from Moto Rapido of exhaust rings today and fresh manifold nuts. Price in case you need was £20.74 inc vat for 4 of each.

Very little happening this week so far regards building sadly as not yet got my vapour blasted yokes and sprocket carrier back from TSR so here is hoping they are done this week.
In the meantime I have been selling and buying other parts and treated her to some new sprockets even though they were very decent. The chain is a D.I.D and has little side movement and although was grimey, it was also greasy too and I gave it a wipeover without any cleaning products and will be white greased before fitment. I intend to give it a better clean in between the link prior to grease though.
I went for a pair of Renthals because I like the colour and the heritage and got standard 39-15.

I had to order another cush drive bearing as never realised there were 2 in that part. That should arrive tomorrow.

I had a bit of a lucky find last night spotting a pair of gold chain adjuster back plates on Ebay under chain parts. And were buy now too. There is not so much wrong with mine other than the chain side one has a few scrapes on the top but these are so much better so mine will be sold on after.

I am about to order the tyres and looks likely now I will go for the Michelin PR2 as PR3 are £50 more and I am needing every penny saved. Its just a case of whether I order online or via somewhere like Watling tyres and get the fitting thrown in as been told they may charge £40 fitting for bought in ones.

I hope by this time next week some proper progress is made but I am slowly ticking stuff off the needed list and the garage is getting tidier as I sell on parts from Fsie,XT500 and Monster parts to bring some cash back in.

The rectifier position doesn't look quite right to me but it is the later version. If memory serves, the fins should run either across the frame or front to back, not at an angle. I'll text you a pick in a bit

Do you just have the backplates spare or do you have the internal adjusters too ?
If you have the full set available I might be interested as I need a set for when I fit my ally swinger over the winter.
A few light scratches probably wouldn't matter much as I will be polishing the swinger and could polish the backplates too.

That sounds ideal then, as long as they're not so badly scratched that it won't polish out.
Pics would be nice, if that's not being, er .....picky.
pm me a price, and I can add to your build fund.

Rear spindle diameters are all the same, aren't they ?
The slots in my swinger are 17mm anyway.

How about you accepting them free you sent me a hose and do stuff for me. They cost me £20 to replace and if I am honest only slightly better but the weird thing is 3 of them have machined on one edge and one had two cast ends. I kept the ones that are better but mate they are 5mm thick and tbh just need a dressing over and if I were not doing it to original they would be better polished up alloy or re anodised.
In payment can you turn me up a 12mm diameter stainless tube with a m8 through hole and 25mm long. Its for me to weld back on to the exhaust clamp and will be cut in half after welding and half with be cleared through.

Back on track now and sussed out the rectifier and it works now fine if I was to turn the steering which I cant do at the moment. I moved the extra plate bracket to the front and the angle make it ok.

News has arrived back about my engine. Surgery has happened and cranks back from being sorted and the bearings failure caused 6th gear damage on both so new one on order so there is £200 plus crank etc etc. Al reckons I should get engine back end of next week possibly so that will give me time to catch up on getting it painted up nice. I think a week off work in November will be on the cards.

This spare lower yoke is going on ebay and is from a 1997 bike and pretty much now as new. Vapour blasted and replated nut and cover washer.

the weird thing is 3 of them have machined on one edge and one had two cast ends.

The left hand ones are machined to clear the sprocket nuts.

Lost my pics of original and I cannot find any decent ones
particylarly where they leave the frame and go around the headstock.

- they seem to leave the frame in the upper trinagle
The rest of the route seems tobe how I now have them but I have not tightened the front end fixings up as the trottle action is not good

Yep, I can do that, assuming that I have a bit of suitably sized stainless in the shed .. which I probably do but I'm away from home at the moment so can't check.
I need to get on the lathe anyway to make some bits for smiffy.

Am I correct to assume that, despite the one-sided machining, there's enough material left for either cap to fit on either side of the swinger without compromising anything ?
If so, then that will do very nicely.
Thanks mate.
And, as you said on another thread, "that's what we like about UKMOC".
In fact, this will add to my ongoing collection of bits on my bike that have come from other club members .... I'm well in to double figures now (including your old Corbin seat as a matter of fact). ..must start a thread about that sometime.

Jeff I have some stainless bar I can send. The end caps are not being ebayed.
Some more things have happened but little to the bike but maybe next week the engine will return for a full paint up. Need to start deciding paint etc and then because its autumn the painting needs to be done in a warm area.
The decals have come from Image works and like I said don't use anyone else unless you are sure and these guys are not dear either. £10 bought me a large and small ducati correct font and colour. A shell casing decal and the tank Agip inc post.

You can see the poor version.

I might have a suitable bit of stainless hanging around so hold fire with sending any for now.

And... while its in the lathe, I could easily bore out half of the hole to save you having to drill it afterwards ...if you like.

ps. those look like PR2s.
I had excellent service from my last pair of those ...7 or 8 thousand miles from the rear.

Albie, are you sure you shouldn't have one like this for the clutch case?

My '97 bike did before it peeled off (I still have it in a folder) as I think Agip was recommended until TPG took over and they struck a deal with Shell.

Also did you ever contact Motostars about the quality of the decal they sent?
The one I received is spot on exactly the same as the original on my seat cowl so presume yours may have been a dodgy one they missed(?). I wouldn't have said about them if I thought they were crap.

No I never realised that may have been an Agip too. Not stuck on yet anyhow. Bit pricey that one so will ask Image works to sort. I have used them in the past so I know they are good and the Moto Rapido race team etc use them. No I didn't reply to Moto Stars as generally couldn't be bothered and stuck the decal on the spare cowl and sold on. Its no ones fault but I cannot remember what the advert said as to description. I have no doubt they make a good range of correct decals but been burnt now and Image can now have my pennies. They always state if you want something send them the image and they will create.
The things I learn every week is fascinating and all comments much appreciated. At the end of this I have no doubt I will still be unhappy with the frame I reckon. Not because of the colour but possibly its more later. I can live with that though for a while at least.

Some days luck is down. Some days luck is with you. I spotted an early tank on Ebay start bid £30. Looked tidy albeit 2 not hefty dents but dents needing some work to pull out shall we say. All underneath clean and tidy and with the seamed front.

I will say the last few moments no one had bid so whacked on a final bid of £136 because I wanted it whatever.

Won it for £43.30 or £30 plus the postage.

Happy..... Very. It can sit and wait to be done at my leisure when I can afford the respray.

Maybe. I did wonder that. Maybe the slightly later one fits off mine I need to check. Could have been a whole lot pricier and bear in mind decals and paint etc. The hinge area looks ok but I am thinking about getting Big Oz to weld it prior to paint to make sure.

All this for that little front area.:eek::)

You know it is sometimes disadvantageous to follow the torque.
Many of those settings are quite light.
For those, I go with ring spanner hand-tight, quarter turn and check with torque wrench - usually right
It is so easy with poor threads/old bolts to overtighten with the torque wrench as it does not give you the feedback of the rigid and light spanner.
....just saying....

Do you know your right. I never usually do use one as I only had a real long one for wheel nut on a single sider.
I was reckoning on doing this one right as far as by the book BUT wasn't going to crank up using a long bar. My s4 conversion never had anything more than arm torque.

I went out and got a small torque wrench and was amazed on the price tbh and its a Draper with a certificate of calibration that's pretty good if honest and well within those tolerances.
I posted purely because I have wanted a list in one page not every chapter of the manual and as a guide and I always see peeps asking this and that torque and realise its really an early version.

There were some bolts I tightened by hand and just did a check. On the click or just under so I am happy.

I paid just £22 for this on ebay inc post and is approx. 12" long and handy size to use.

Yes I read that... Makes sense keeping the spring off tension.

I had only a small play with stuff as working all weekend. Luckily only standby today so took the chance to raise the rear and loose fit swingarm to try and fabricate a ohlins remote on that frame mount. Its only a rough one to check it works and doesn't interfere with shock or exhaust before I get the OZ to help me reproduce in a more solid more constructed welded plate version in thicker plate and a machine rolled radius cup in aluminium. He was talking titanium but will see what we can do.
It seems to be ok as a trial but it could bounce and bend if no strengthen ribs.

Carburettor now has the correct size spring protector on the last hose. Its a detail and very minor and never seen.

Fitted eventually the spindle to bearing bush.

Question.... Do the cush drive pins press in or are they threaded. I was going to replate as now bare metal after vapour blast and the allen socket and a vice would not turn it out.

Replaced all the rubber dampers on the rectifier/fuel pump/airbox mount/and oil breather box. Lost the new ones somewhere for the rear tail light.

Removed the front pentagonal plate and buffed up ready for plating with the screws. Will order a new gasket set even though came off nicely

They're threaded ....LEFT HAND.
And be careful, the hub itself may be a tad on the brittle side.

Now you say that it seems obvious. All now safely removed and in the plating box. Just needed the Loctite removing off on the wire wheel.

Thank you very much.

Now you say that it seems obvious.

Yeah, but I've lost count of the number of times I've thought that.

Also, I've just noticed on your little pic (perhaps I should say "avatar", but I'm loathe to descend to the jargon) that you might be missing one black bung for the handlebar clamp bolts .....?
Knowing what a stickler you are for detail on a resto, I could offer you one of my three (yep, I had one missing too).
That's assuming I can find it.
I no longer need them as my bar clamp bolts are now stainless.
I could bung it in with the other bit for the exhaust clamp ...once I get chance to make it, that is (shouldn't be long).

Well spotted. Yes been annoying me that. I have 3 so yes if you would be so kind. I have some stainless if you need it . Was going to cut a wardrobe for handle up for it. A bit wasteful but needs must lol.

Well my £30 tank arrived at my local Ducati service centre ( Thanks Al for accepting it ) and boxed up within an inch of its life. We that's me Al and Glen was amazed at the bargain be it having 2 dents. Inside looks rust free pretty much and so does under side and the hinge looks strong. Al doesn't feel the need to reinforce now but that's for discussion. Looks like I have may have to drill out a broken fuel cap mount bolt.
The dents look clean but still going to be tough to pull out I reckon but its got to be completely resprayed on the top. I may keep the bottom as is clean unless the hinge is done.

Interesting decal on the front to possibly replicate for the warning of lifting the tank with a lot of fuel etc through the breather.

To be honest the worst bit of rust seems to be the seat rubs causing paint to wear through. That area could be the hardest part to finish.

Oh well £30 was a steal even if it has a respray. It will be perfect after and seeing that yellow one the other month with what looked like the bottom was falling off and offers around £125.

Biggest news is engines done and being picked up tomorrow so I should have it tomorrow afternoon.

The bill is £784 for the crank work and the 6th gears replaced by a specialist. If I am being honest I was surprised and very happy. Bear in mind I still need to have a service and belts and new clutch plates its well within my budgeted allowance.

So once its back its all the bolts off and clean up the casings and heads for paint whilst the rest goes to plating.

No warning sticker on mine either, only ever seen it on later bikes, not very early ones.

That's also the first tank I've seen that's the same as mine. The hand writing I think is an inspectors signature and date, mine says "Sal 5/93" I think

Cool. I guess 3 pipes is not needed and that's why the splitter petcock. I can live without that to the point I have to as petcock not available.
Investigate the oil sticker but certainly not paying 9 for one. I will leave off the tank prop warning maybe too. I see you have a later clutch cover with rubber gasket on it not an alloy one.

We now have a M900 engine at home and managed to lift it from the car through the house and round the back into the garage and up on the bench. Just !...

Don't be fooled by the look as the paint is not all that. Its soft and scratchable and painted over the old paint or metal and has a funny feel. The person also painted over the black barrels too.

All about this bike is not all that seems once again and I was earlier saying about the engine number being high and some parts later than most 93. The engine casings are early Cagiva marked elephants but cast numbers are 95.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20151029_193422.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20151029_193422.jpg.html)

Not particularly bothered about that as these things can get replaced by Ducati it seems.

Now the hard part of cleaning all the cruddy paint off it all and addressing it all again. Part of me wishes to strip her all down to heads and barrel and get blasted. It may happen but need to think about that. The casings I am not so bothered about.

This concerns me slightly and am investigating but looks like a split but not through. The bike never leaked oil but it worries me to the point of I can have it welded but will I now have to split it all again. I am sure if the guy who did the crank would have said if he had seen anything inside to worry about he would have said. He luckily found the damage on the 6th gears and wasn't that obvious.

Spending small chunks of time trying to clean up the engine. Very monotonous work but will all be worth the effort I hope. Finding more things needing replacement like a broken corner off the triangular oil feed plate which I want to sort out.

http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b423/ukmonster/Monster%20900/20151101_152906.jpg (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/ukmonster/media/Monster%20900/20151101_152906.jpg.html)

Alternator feed cable needs a repair as sheathing is bare on one cable.

You only get out what you put in the saying goes so I decided I am going all in with stripping it down a bit more to get able to clean heads and barrels up. Wasn't really planning as I was a bit scared tbh . Granted I have had engines apart but never a Ducati but by choice.
So with the cost of a top end rebuild kit being £27 from Moto Rapido its no biggy and just need to get the barrels off. Need a good read of the manual for the rest and presume to get heads blasted I need to take off all the cams and followers and belt pulleys.

Gives me time to get all the nuts and washers plated on these heads too.

Remove everything, I'd be using bolts/washers and some old inner tube or similar as gaskets to seal up the valve guides. Dave will be able to advise you.

I blasted all the engine casings/cylinders/heads on mine. Remove everything that you can and seal all the holes well to keep the blast media out, I used various 'bungs' (earplugs are good for oilways etc.) and loads of tape. The important thing is to make sure you get all the grit out afterwards.

High pressure airline, washtank, fairy liquid scrub (in the kitchen sink) and the dishwasher are all good - but only use the dishwasher on parts you are painting or polishing as it greys alloy...

Dukedesmo

Also, I recommend the use of rotary wire brushes (brass are softer than steel) in a dremel for cleaning up combustion chambers & ports followed by the fairy liquid again.

Lucky I did take the pistons off as we have a broken lower piston ring on the horizontal. Now I don't believe I broke it because nothing hard about the removing so we may have had a fracture. It fell apart on lifting up the barrel.

Parts to also be vapour blasted

My job tomorrow is take all this lot down to Al at Proteam and beg him to remove the cam pulley and remove the belt roller too along with the cams and followers so I can get them to Dave at TSR . Going to give him the carb inlets to see if come out better.

Worst case scenario is a light hone on the barrels too as there is a light mark maybe where that ring was breaking up but not scored.

So more stuff needed but very glad I never just left it as was.

Surprising what you find about to go wring when you start taking things apart!
I could mention a river or red water and oil and needle rollers from a certain Le mans when I took the swing arm off on Monday night!

Panic over on the piston rings. Al from Proteam gave me a 900 piston with rings. All is good. Heads being stripped apart by him and barrel all ready done now. Found a slighty iffy cambelt roller bearing so going to replace all 4 if anyone knows what size to order.

A tedious task is going well and slowly getting the cr4p off the motor. It has scars from work and as I said must have some history of damage but what I see is just bad finishing of spatter from weld.
Should get my heads back soon stripped of parts and then off this week to Dave. I am almost at the point of deciding the starter motor is coming off to also be cleaned etc and new brushes fitted as I cannot easily finish cases behind it.

Getting Image Works to refinish my faded paint on the oil level decal with either a replacement decal over the aluminium one or one I can use as a stencil to spray black only.

I never got that seat unit I was offering good money for with the mirrors even though I had basically committed as he never got back after saying he would so a brand new seat from Italy and just £75 is on its way as one of my Xmas pressies. Cant beat original new old stock.
Mine will be up for sale and its in decent condition or if not it will be restored with a pillion cut out comfort area but look like OEM for passenger use only.

I also still want some real nice condition OEM mirrors so may well buy from Ducati now as that was another part I had an agreement of sale on.

Whilst browsing I also looked around for a Tool Pouch. Lots around and odds a sods in various states of condition at some extortionate rates of money.

Was happy to have one with just the Ducati logo on but then......................

The right year and the right LOGO for £13 plus post from the good old USA

Happy days. Going to need to add a few more tools but I have the original helmet cable from the bike and is superior to the modern ones.

So my heads are stripped but I have a damaged rocker I need now to replace as has a fracture. I guess another good thing found by being taken apart.

Well the 2 heads with covers , 2 barrels and inlet tubes are now with Dave @ TSR vapour blasting and will be back maybe a week or so.
So will just carry on with the main block but am nearly there. Plating is going off next week though for the final parts.

Seat arrived from Italy and really is a brand new old one. I will keep the other and repair neatly the small defects by unstapling it and bonding some weave on the back. I will try and scoop some from the pillion area but not much and then glue the cover down and restaple as a pillion only seat.

After giving up with the seller of the other seat and mirrors on here I have a very nice pair coming from USA again and very little corrosion on the olive green plating parts and work out at £20 each inc post.

Don't buy the ones on Ebay that show an image of what looks like OEM because they are NOT. Don't get me wrong they look ok as a mirror but not like the original and I gave them poor feedback for portraying the OEM image to sell.

Starter motor is painted again keeping the original sticker by carefully masking. The top nut and lock nut will be replaced with a shiney plated ones. The 2 long bolts are on there way to platers along with lots more from the engine casings which have temporarily been replaced with stainless.

After much cleaning off the paint and think powdercoat from the camshaft end covers they are repainted black and look good now. Lettering all cleared out nicely.

The casings are virtually there but this week I will finally finish the cleaning and rubbing down before I take it along to show Big Oz the dink and decide whether or not its possible to weld that possibly to make sure its good. At least now with the starter motor removed its clean behind it.

Platers will receive the last parts for coloured zinc including the correct front brake lines from USA sourced parts.

Cleaned up the valves of the carbon and once the heads are back will lap them back in myself before Alec rebuilds the heads and engine for me once painted. I also cleaned the belt cover ends of the silver paint overspray. Its a shame they have some cracks in the rubber but I am looking into seeing if some kind of black silicone rubber or bonding can be used to fill the cracks at least.

On the basis of my ongoing bodges in that area, epoxy aladite dont last, silicon rubber neither. Metal epoxy is currently lasting but is a dark grey not black rubber colour.

Thanks for that. I wont be paying £50 for a new one. They are fine to use as is but will see what we can do. Maybe a soldering iron can weld together carefully. Rubber melts around 150 - 160 degrees but will try in a place not showing first.

You can colour epoxy with poster paint.
You know, the powdered paint that they mix with water to change the colour of play group children....I mean for the kiddies to paint with.

Just mix a little of the powder in when you mix the two epoxy parts together....China restorers use that technique to mend broken pots...Obviously getting a perfect colour match is a skill, but black should be easy.

Epoxy is best cleaned up before it sets, with water...Warm water is best, maybe with a (really tiny) drop of detergent. Solvents are no good.

Epoxy is actually not brilliant at handling heat, so is not ideal for engine repairs.

There is a one part polysulphide glazing sealant called Arbocol. which is trowel-able/workable, and would fill cracks ect.
It dries like a hard rubber and comes in various colours (probably black).

Later this week I will be using a butyl rubber glazing medium for the first time....I will report back if it appears useful for this job.
