Recently my 2005 S2R 800 has started slipping the clutch when warm at high revs. I've checked the span adjustment at the lever and bled the clutch. I did change the oil approximately 500 miles ago with a bike specific semi synthetic but only noticed the slipping very recently so I thought I better take the clutch out to check that.

With the clutch plates removed I measured the friction plates and they are all close to, or just on the minimum limit of 3.45mm. The steel plates mostly look ok with one looking very brown with blue spots, picture below.

I've never had clutch issues before so is this looking like I need to replace the whole clutch pack? Also am I right in saying the S2R 800 uses the same clutch back as the 2004 onwards 620I because I am going off these specs.

Thanks for any help folks.

I've got a complete wet clutch pack for sale, it looks almost new. Came from a MTS1000 I think. It may be the same, but you would have to check.

Looks like it but lets wait for others to comment.
Yep 620ie onwards they all apparently had those anptc (or something like that) slipper wet clutches. Horrible things but hey.

Just curious how many miles has it done?

I don't think it will fit unfortunately otherwise I would have it. I need clutch pack with part number 19020161A. Ducati Glasgow are closed today so I couldn't get a price from them but a bike parts seller on ebay has one for 185 delivered, not sure if the Ducati dealer will be more or less than that.

Bike is showing 26000 miles but had the clocks replaced by a previous owner and is apparently 10000 miles less due to a second hand set of clocks being used. Either way not moon mileage for a clutch but I will admit to enjoying the odd clutch wheelie but have never had to replace a clutch despite clutching up wheelies every ride on previous bikes, nothing like that much on my monster.

Out of interest why do you say the slipper clutches are horrible? Are they a known weak point?

I dont think he means all slipper clutches only the ATPC (http://www.sportrider.com/ducati-aptc-clutch) ones

Thanks for that, those are a lot cheaper than OEM Ducati. I would just re use my old steel plates?

Will ring Ducati Glasgow for a price tomorrow. Would you replace the springs too? They are well within spec.

Normally a clutch pack would include both if they're oem, at least they do on dry. Spring are usually fine. Problem with a disc that overheated is that has probably warped too. And you don't want to find out once they've been put back in.

Exactly ATPC is **** all it does is slip when it is not supposed to and does not when it should.

That is very low for a wet clutch TBH. I usually do 15k-20k out of a dry one and wet should apparently last twice as long.

I have done 25k now and baby monster and no clutch issues so far well except APTC slipping at hard take off. Funny as rear locks up a lot at down shifts..... Even yesterday evening braking up the hill did not shift down or up just kept it in 3rd yet it locked up.

I've never had the wheel lock up or noticed it behaving any differently from any other bike I've had with a slipper clutch, but I'm in the habit of always blipping the throttle to match the revs when changing down.

i have part worn clutch pack from an s2r 800 for sale done about 4000 miles. £ 70 posted to mainland uk

the APTC clucth is fine imho, its much easier if you do a lot of town riding

only niggle is that bite point can be annoying an squirm around at time sometimes, its hard to go back from a dry clutch though eh lucas :-)

Bought a new Ducati clutch pack then replaced both friction and steel plates. Just been for a ride and all seems well again but I've not really given it much revs until I get a few more miles on the new clutch.

What do you mean go back, I still prefer dry clutch. It bites better, feels better and exercises hand that by nature seas less exercise if you are right handed :P
