So a while ago i bought a rear shock off ebay for my 1995 m600. Unfortunately it appears to be a bit shorter than the original unit. Any ideas? I suspect i could just swap the springs. Just wondering why its so short compared to the old one.

If you swap the springs all you've done is bought a new 2nd hand spring. I'd suspect they've given you the wrong shock but I could be wrong. I thought the shocks were all the same length (900,750,600)
Swapping the spring will have no effect on the length of the shock, irrespective of spring preload, at rest they are fully extended.

the shorter one is from a newer monster - someone on here *cough* Kato *cough* led me to believe it would fit :) At least the spring will be in better nick than the current one...

I was going to suggest that it could be from a newer bike, sans hoop. Sounds like you've found that out.
