Howdy Folks

for those of you that are either keen / crazy enough to do the shim clearances on Desno engines, here's a useful tip. The piccy attached shows how to keep valves from dropping when the shims are removed. Just make sure the tie hooks into the collet groves.

Good thin about 2 valve shims, if you use good quality oil etc they rarely need shimming.

I have done all my own servicing and at 36,000 miles it just about needed one shim doing (which just meant linishing the existing one down a bit on a stone) and a few more whilst getting towards the edge of tolerance, arent there yet. I was very pleasantly surprised by it and its another in the Desmo knockers coffins.

I just use a wooden clothes peg;)

As Duncan said, if you set them up properly to start with (and using new collets is the key), then if they do go out of adjustment, fitting new collets brings them straight back:D
The collets I have checked new, have all come up the same size, but they are soft and get hammered, so changing them I have found is the answer ......
Total cost of about £3 ;) :D and no dicking about trying to get the next size shim if you by them along with the gaskets before you start;)

All shims fitted - spent lots of time (all afternoon) getting the clearances just right! Absolute smack on what Lee at Monstershop recommended.

Fitting new belts was a bit of a struggle! Lots of cussing as I wrestled them over the pulleys!

Another useful tip:

I had the take the oil cooler off and the pipes were dribbling oil so I cut the finger off a rubber glove and made the pipe a condom! Not dribbles!!

Happy having spent the day in the garage!

Hey Pedro, I was thinking about doing mine at the mo. Did you follow the Hayes manual? How big a job was it?

Thanks ever so…

Hey Mike

I kinda used some of the Haynes Book of Lies but also info from the web. Haynes is ok up to a point but there are definitely easier ways to do things. I also spkoe to Lee at Monstershop for his advise as well as my local Duke specialist.

I have a fair amount of mechanical savvy so I didn't find it to difficult, just time consuming. I wouldn't recommend it if your unsure of things mechanical.

I might just write something up for future reference if your interested.
