Heya guys and gals! Its official! ive been bitten by the ducati bug........

Bought my 2000 M900Sie mid december, and put over 1500 miles on here since then..... she has her faults, and her age is showing in a few places so i think its best i rectify a few issues and get her looking (and performing!) as i want.......

Main issues right now are:

lumpy performance at low rpms...... discovered the inside of the connector on the CPS was soaking and corroded today.... new one of them ordered! Dried it out and it rode a hell of a lot better.

Manky Ducati engine paint..... this will be sorted next winter.

General use marks and scratches ect.

ANYWAY! Here she is!

http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww260/Airsoftman227/Mobile%20Uploads/CD8CAB7C-C3E2-4B61-9743-D55EAA38DE84_zpsh0o2wpfo.jpg (http://s725.photobucket.com/user/Airsoftman227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/CD8CAB7C-C3E2-4B61-9743-D55EAA38DE84_zpsh0o2wpfo.jpg.html)

Truely love how these older monsters look, such a timeless shape!

Ive already changed out the plugs, fitted a K&N, and ordered a few bits such as a factory racing slave cylinder (my clutch fluid is BLACK..... and keeps going black when changed), a full set of HEL lines, and basically anything i can get in carbon fibre.........

Keep an eye out for updates and questions!

Joe.

Looks great!

I remember when I got my first Monster I rode about 1,000 miles in the first few weeks. Cracking bikes!

Glad you're enjoying her. If you're riding in winter with all the salt etc, a liberal coating of ACF50 (on a clean bike) will keep all the metalwork protected throughout the winter, then in spring you can just give it a good wash and all the crud drops away leaving a shiny bike aunderneath

Nice, best colour too :)

She gets a good coating of acf everytime I wash her! :).

I love the colour, but I'm also thinking of changing it..... I'm never going to sell the bike so I might as well make her my own!

2000 M900Sie....You can't go wrong..

What's a cps ?

I changed my clutch slave for an Oberon. The hose dangled all winter and I gave it the odd squirt of clutch and brake cleaner. Nothing but clean c+b cleaner dripped from the end. Then I bled new fluid through a clean hose into a new slave.....Still it goes black within weeks..:grump:

Camshaft position sensor ;).

It's a reoccurring thing then?

Camshaft position sensor ;).

Ah!... Of course..Or do you mean Crankshaft?

Lots of people complain of black fluid, but now I sit and think about it I am wondering if it is really the fluid that is black or just the black rubber bellows inside the resevoir showing through.?

Can't say as I've actually had the cap off and looked at the fluid since the change.

JMH900sie

This one is the camshaft.... Cps can refer to either.....

My fluid is BLACK...... Like tar

I've got a Factory Racing slave which I intend fitting soon, so I will be interested to see if the fluid still discolours. I usually change mine before it goes black, but it soon gets darker than the brake fluid. I wonder if a bigger reservoir would help, if there is more fluid then it won't get contaminated to the same level so quickly?

My clutch fluid does discolour but it gets nowhere near black.
It is a wet clutch though.
But I can't really see how that would make any difference.
All I can think of is that it may not get so hot ???? ......but I'm don't really buy that explanation tbh.
Its been the same with both the original slave and an aftermarket one (same design as Factory Racing one).
And if anything, I've been late rather than early with the fluid changes.

Darren69
20-02-2015, 01:28 PM
I think it could also be due the location of the clutch slave right next to the chain and small particles of crud can make it past the oil seals and get sucked up the pipe.

Mr Gazza
20-02-2015, 05:44 PM
Sorry Darren, I don't buy the chain crud getting into the fluid.
The seals would have to be in poor shape to get past with the clutch system under positive pressure.

My theory is that there is sometimes, some rotation in the slave, of either the piston and/or seal. the contamination might be dark material from the seal itself or more likely material from the friction between the piston and cylinder. Both being aluminium they would produce dark or black matter.

I know the piston ought not rotate but I bet it does ...quite a lot probably...That's my theory anyway.

Heat from the clutch pushrod passes along to heat the fluid I was told and makes sense. Theres a lot of pressure and load on it spinning

slob
20-02-2015, 06:55 PM
brakes get damned hot too but the fluid doesn't discolour, perhaps because they cool periodically while the engine sustains heat?
it's just a case of 'they all do that sir, nothing to worry about'

Chriswilly
21-02-2015, 05:18 PM
The clutch fluid in the reservoir of my M900ie is also black - partly due to the black rubber sealer in the top of the reservoir which protrudes deep into the 'pot'.

Possibly another cause could be worn piston seals on the master cylinder.

Have bled my system several times but to no avail - clutch works fine though.

bluestoesonnose

My S4R did this and I just ignored it. Changed the fluid in the brakes and clutch on the M1000 yesterday and the fluid was very dark. We'll see how it lasts. I wouldn't worry too much about it until you start loosing fluid.

Well, I've been shopping! The cowl on the bike has a few age, and boot related marks...... So when this came up on eBay, I had to have it! Genuine Ducati performance, new old stock, and all mine for £55!

All I need now is a carbon tank..... If anyone knows of one, let me know! :)

First sign of the expensive carbonitis
- there are huggers, front fenders, air scoops and of course bellypans!
(Lets pretend Carbon Tanks don't exist as that is an extreme form of the ailment)

I have a Ducati Performance carbon cowl on my bike.
It came to me second (third ?) hand.
I mention it because the resin had begun to dull and yellow, which may be a long term issue with yours and some other Ducati Performance carbon items.
The solution is U-Pol no.1, uv-resistant clear lacquer. and a rub down with fine wet 'n dry, followed by cutting compound.
Mine now looks like new......well, better probably.
Might be worth treating yours before it fades.
I may do the same on all my future carbon.

These seem to be on sale on eBay at the moment so I snapped one up! Hopefully it'll help with the heavy clutch around town syndrome these bikes seem to suffer from.... I've also bought a new HEL clutch hose (carbolook with black fittings of course!)

One question, when I fit this do I need to use the spacer for the pushrod?

Joe

Depends one the age of your engine, I think the older ones need the spacer. You'll soon know when you fit it. It won't work without it if it needs it and it won't bolt up properly if you fit it and it doesn't need it :)

Hmmm, I've written down 32mm+. I can't remember if that means if it's 32mm you need the spacer or if it's 32mm you don't! Not very helpful sorry :)

My 2000 M900Sie required the spacer to be fitted on my Oberon slave...Same would apply to the Factory Racing I would imagine.

Today's update!

My HEL clutch line has arrived, as has my k&n oil filter...... Just waiting on oil now! Friday, the engine side cases are coming off, being sand blasted, and being repainted over the weekend..... Ordered a new gasket for the clutch side cover, and the flywheel side just uses instant gasket.....

As for today, I decided my rearsets were looking far too shabby! Pulled the brake side one off, cleaned it up, and got it into primer:
http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww260/Airsoftman227/Mobile%20Uploads/1E23D712-B274-4319-A9EE-21E9D4FA14D9_zps3yl3jxwg.jpg (http://s725.photobucket.com/user/Airsoftman227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1E23D712-B274-4319-A9EE-21E9D4FA14D9_zps3yl3jxwg.jpg.html)

Not fully decided that I'm repainting them silver or black yet, but I'm leaning to silver more.....

Also took a few pics in the sun!

Hey Joe.

she's pretty tidy to start with but you are doing a great job of improving her.

Beats me why they made the Sie so dowdy? I set about getting rid of as much grey as possible on mine. A few colour changes and a bit of polish gives it some sparkle and lets the light in.

Another job for you, is to get the exhaust pipes off and polish them up..:D

UPDATE (for anyone that cares!):

Fitted the factory racing clutch slave, and the HEL line on friday...... Anyone that rides around town a lot.... DO THE SAME MODIFICATION. Its made a world of difference to how the clutch feels. a billion times better! I also did an oil and filter change..... the bike now feels WAY smoother than it did before. Very very happy chappy.

I also dusted off my very limited photoshop skills to get an idea of how i want the bike to look..... and here it is!

http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww260/Airsoftman227/Mobile%20Uploads/C2A2A031-A2FA-4212-81F6-6E75AF068378_zpstpgbqblg.jpg (http://s725.photobucket.com/user/Airsoftman227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/C2A2A031-A2FA-4212-81F6-6E75AF068378_zpstpgbqblg.jpg.html)

The Factory Racing clutch slave is a great bit of kit, makes the clutch so light. I have been advised that the standard 16mm master cylinder is struggling a bit to move enough fluid, so a switch to radial m/c is being considered at the moment.

UPDATE TIME! :D......

This week, ive been trying to button up a few major cosmetic issues i was having with the bike (part of the reason i got it so cheap.... but very annoying).....

first up, the exhausts. The bikes got an amazing pair of SILMOTO high level, 105DB beast cannons on it, which were faded, and pretty crappy looking. Removed the decals, and hit them with a UV resistant lacquer...... using 1200 grit wet and dry every few coats to get them smooth. Also used lots of metal polish on the stainless. Im very happy. Here are before and afters, with and without flash.......

http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww260/Airsoftman227/Mobile%20Uploads/92EE1571-ECE4-4CA9-8DBE-D7E5F0B075A0_zpsfhxkdhb3.jpg (http://s725.photobucket.com/user/Airsoftman227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/92EE1571-ECE4-4CA9-8DBE-D7E5F0B075A0_zpsfhxkdhb3.jpg.html)

Not 100% flawless, but plenty good enough for me! VERY HAPPY CHAPPY.

next up were the rearsets..... the right hand one was badly discoloured, and they were both silver.... not fitting what i want from the bike. Out come the black paint. Lots and painting, sanding and swearing later, i have these.....

http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww260/Airsoftman227/Mobile%20Uploads/1E23D712-B274-4319-A9EE-21E9D4FA14D9_zps3yl3jxwg.jpg (http://s725.photobucket.com/user/Airsoftman227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1E23D712-B274-4319-A9EE-21E9D4FA14D9_zps3yl3jxwg.jpg.html)

and then this!

http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww260/Airsoftman227/Mobile%20Uploads/B3C78680-658A-4707-8AC9-673D9B124973_zpsfak07kog.jpg (http://s725.photobucket.com/user/Airsoftman227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/B3C78680-658A-4707-8AC9-673D9B124973_zpsfak07kog.jpg.html)

I also painted the center section of the shift rod black to match, again, happy chappy.

FINALLY, i got sick of the tea tray. But, being a cheapskate i didnt want to invest 40 quid in what is essentially a bracket..... so i made one! first attempt is crude, but ive learnt alot for v2........ heres the tail.... CHOPPED!

http://i725.photobucket.com/albums/ww260/Airsoftman227/Mobile%20Uploads/7F4DE09E-C4BF-4B31-8230-56D9A60CC2DC_zpsfggy8nxf.jpg (http://s725.photobucket.com/user/Airsoftman227/media/Mobile%20Uploads/7F4DE09E-C4BF-4B31-8230-56D9A60CC2DC_zpsfggy8nxf.jpg.html)

Im also working on a way to change the colour of your fork tubes which doesn't involve vinyl, spraying, ano, and is easily and completely reversible, and a child could fit! if my idea comes to fruition, i'm going to sell kits for anyone interested!

I also need help. Having an issue with my indicators..... in that all four flash at once no matter where i indicate! Fitted new indicators, and an LED flasher relay.... since then, boom, hazards.

I had to angle my plate up a lot to clear it on full compression over bumps - first attempt got smashed

You'll also need a rear reflector as the lack of one is an MOT fail

Well, I've finally got sick of the electrical gremlins I was having, and decided to do something about it......

So, today, this happened.......

Yep, that's my bike...... And yep, that's my bikes wiring loom on the ramp in front. There were poorly spliced wires, insulation tape, and ****e all over it. Connectors were corroded and in poor condition too! Currently splitting the entire thing, drying it out (it's soaking inside!) and sorting all the previous bodges out. I need to find a new throttle position sensor connector as mine is ruined. If anyone knows what type it is, let me know!

I've also put the injectors in a special sonic cleaner that pulses them in time with the sonic waves, and my God, the crap that came out of them was unreal. The one wasn't even spraying properly. The throttle bodies are a bit dirty too, so they're coming off Monday and are going in the big sonic tank for a few hours.

It's a big step stripping the bike this much myself, but I'm loving every second of it! :).

Yeah, that's the college bike workshop. They usually don't let first years bring their own stuff in, but me and the tutor seem to hit it off at the start of term and I can pretty much do as I please..... It does help that I'm not a total spanner like some of the others mind XD.

Can't wait to get back in Monday and keep at it..... Just need to find out what type of connector is on the tps now!

Also, there's a tutor that does the evening classes that used to be a master tech for Ducati...... He's doing my valve clearances next week! :). It's not what you know, it's who you know!

What do you guys think? The blue piece behind will be black in the next few days (left the protect coating on the alu bracket I made)

I think it looks very cool! Have you got it working yet?

Not yet, I need to go and get a connector and some wire so I can build a new loom for it. That'll get done today :)!

Well, this finally happened today and I'm ecstatic!

The ohlins forks are sublime and have completely transformed how the bike performs. The front feels as stable as a rock! She's much comfier too! :)
Also fitted a new clutch including basket and she revs so much more freely now.

Front fender has been ordered (carbon unit off an rsvr Mille aprillia!) as the standard one wouldn't fit due to different mounts. I've also ordered a set of renthal flat bars for it to get rid of that crazy supermoto stance (even though it looks much better in person!)

Thanks guys!

Well, I dynoed the bike today and I'm very pleased with the HP figure,

81.4hp for a 15 year old, well used bike.... Very pleased with this as a starting point.

I've ordered a power commander 3, a k&n and I'm going to have the flywheel lightened just a little...... Well quite a lot actually!

She's also due a major service, so the engines coming out next week for a belt change..... But I'm also going to paint it and sort the valve clearances out at the same time.....

I'd love to see 100hp eventually, but gaining 20% power is going to be a long road I think!

You can achieve 100bhp but I reckon the value is little. Kato must be on that with his bike I reckon. Bear in mind my 1100s was only 95 and EVO is 100 because of different casting mods on the casings I would be happy with 90hp out of it.

My 1000 was just on 100hp, not cheap... Took about a grand to get there, full exhaust, pc111, air filter and full custom fuel map. No mechanical mods though. I'd be surprised if a 900 would get this number with some serious head work and other things

The heads/valves are the limiting factor they will only flow so much gas, but close to 85-90 should be achievable. I would think around a 5-10% increase with a full exhaust and fueling mods. Its torque you really want to increase, thats more usuable power than outright max hp

Okay, maybe a three figure HP number was a bit of a long shot....

90hp sounds plenty for the road, and to be honest, I only bought the power commander to smooth her out as much as I can :)

If you fit 4 valve heads then 3 figures are quite easy! That's what Ducati did, its pretty much the same engine otherwise :)

Would that work? I'm assuming it's not a simple bolt on procedure

One good thing about Ducati engines is that they often share the same platform so there is a lot of mixing n' matching that can be done, which is basically how Ducati came up with the Monster in the first place.

The bottom end of the 900 is basically the same as a 916 etc., so if you fit the barrels & heads etc. from a 4-valve, you'd end up with; a Monster S4 but it would be easier/cheaper to buy an S4 or at least the engine.

My 900 has a 2mm overbore to 944cc and along with a few other non too radical mods makes 91hp with a very healthy spread of torque. I do know of a 944cc (air cooled) that put out 110hp but the builder/owner put a lot of effort into that.

The 3-valve engine from the ST3 is a good compromise and despite being water cooled can 'almost' be made to look as if it's not...

That's my issue, I want air cooled. I bought the 900 for two reasons, dry clutch and air cooled, so I don't want to lose that.....

I'll fit the power commander and see where that gets me..... A new set of bigger headers should be next on my list! :)

Darren69

Yea, you want big headers with a spaghetti/tangential manifold (and high level link pipes for max torque) and music! :)

Well, I've just been out on my first ride After fitting the power commander, and mapping it correctly.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE! she's smoother, revs more freely and has noticeably more power and torque..... Best 100quid I've spent so far.

Now to fire it back on the dyno ;)

Yea, I wouldn't be without mine. Did you use one of the standard maps and/or adjust using the buttons? If you did then there will be even more improvements to be had from the dyno.

I used a map from power commander that pretty closely matches what I've got fitted..... I've got access to a dyno, so I'll throw it on there any have a play about :)

You have started what you wanted to do. Improve it to your taste. Been there done that and been there once again to reverse it all too. It will be fine and you will enjoy it.

I'm thoroughly enjoying it! Did find that one of my belts was quite slack, so I think I had lucky timing with getting it out! It's having some mechanical work done along side all this cosmetic stuff too. Got to keep her happy :)
