View Full Version : Exhaust cleanup

I decided to clean the very dirty brown exhaust headers on my M900ie this weekend and they have gone from hideous to fabulous in a couple of hours, I bought a few bits in order to mechanize the manual labor. I used a red scotchbrite flap wheel on my angle grinder, this really made short work of 95% of the crud, I then used the tired flap wheel with some Solvol. To finish off I used a cloth wheel with Solvol on a battery drill. The results for the invested time were amazing. I also managed to swap out a badly rusted exhaust stud, this one had a nasty "waist" corroded right near the head, I had procrastinated as to if I should risk trying to extract it and risk a "snap off" and all the hassle that goes with it. Imagine my surprise when it came out without incident :-) I gave the ends of my Termi's a quick cleanup too. I popped in to see my dad at lunchtime with a view to cleaning up the exhaust clamp flanges in his bench mounted wire brush as these were looking a bit sorry too, he offered to clean and paint them for me - result

Will post some pictures soon

Looking forward to your pictures..

I have polished up three sets now, useing various degrees of emery cloth or flap wheels, always finishing with coarse then fine buffing wheels for a mirror finish.

Can't understand why folk leave them unpolished for so long as they stay shiney for ages.

They now have a nice coat of ACF50 wiped all over them, I'm going to let them stand like that until I wipe them with a clean cloth and refit over the weekend,
