I noticed when I bought my bike it was dim when in gear, then bright when in neutral. Now it's off when in gear?! XD

If it is off when in gear and on when in Neutral then that is fine.

I think you are right with the poor connection, at least you have one, mine gave up ages ago.

I don't speak from personal experience but I've heard that the position of the neutral switch is adjustable using shim washers (std practice on initial assembly).
Maybe this needs readjusting ?

It's working again now. Dim when in gear, bright when not. Damn electrical gremlins

The switch maybe not opening properly or dirty contacts.

Try cleaning it with contact cleaner or removing it from the casing and changing the 'shim' (ally washer) that spaces it away from the gearshaft to get the correct spacing.

The wires fell off my 916 neutral switch due to years of crap blasting onto them, I had to re-solder them and found it easier to remove it first.

Try squirting a little switch cleaner or wd 40 or something in the back of the switch, they're not sealed very well

You need to find out if its the switch or the wiring. Turn ign on and put it in gear,( engine not running ) if light is dim, disconnect the wire going to the switch. If the light goes off, then its the switch, if not then start checking the wire for shorts.. these switches work by earthing the wire when in neutral, so enabling light on dash. when in gear there should be no continuity to earth so light is off.
Good luck and merry Christmas.. Tosh

It's off again now. Still works when in neutral, just off when in gear

Most of the lights in the cluster run off a common earth so they will do this kind of thing easily, usually it's just the switch itself, the shimmings probably a little out.
