Even though I wish it wasnt in such circumstances.

I broke down last week, Oil/petrol leak. Have had a friend take a look and we spent saturday taking her appart. (I say we, He done it all while I watched and held screws and bits)
Turns out a previous owner had done a quick fix.
I have called Seastar and they have ordered a few bits for me but finding the Carburetor float bowl and gasket is proving a problem.

Wondering if anoyone knows where I can get one for my Monster 600 '99 plate? also a rough price guide as its christmas and money is tight (fingers crossed for a lottery win)

Thank you

( will try and upload pics tonight when I'm not on works computer)

Hello CrazyDuck

Sorry to hear you are having problems!

Not too familliar with Ducati carbs, but when you say "oil/petrol leak" I wonder if you have an oil feed to your carbs for a de-icer? If so then I think you will need the specific parts for that system. But then again I think it is only 900's that have that.

My carby one had a diverter tap to put warm oil round the carbs if needed, so assuming that is the only way you could be leaking oil and petrol?

The 600 had the oil heater system for the carbs too, until it was superceeded by an electrical system after about year 2000. Niether system made the slightest difference.

You're not the first to tell me that the carb warmer didn't work Dookbob.

All I know is that whenever my carbs iced up, usually when I came to a halt or slowed to near walking pace. I would turn the tap, re-start and have no further icing on that particular trip.
I was in the habit of turning the tap back to normal at the end of the journey, so I did get caught out when I didn't correctly anticipate the icing conditions. However I never experienced an ice up with the warmer turned on.

Not strictly scientific reasoning, but they always worked for me..:spin:

Now I'm no expert but I'm sure there isn't supposed to be all those cracks in it...

Silkolene pro boast with the fuel is good for stopping carbs from icing up

Ok. Might be because it's a closed fb group. Will try uploading them to that page. Thanks.

The oil fed warmer didn't do much on its own, you can probably take it off. I'm not sure if the electrical version faired any better. I found was best this cold weather to blank off part of the oil cooler, so the bike runs a little warmer, and fit some sort of baffle across the frame in front of the front inlet to shield it from the cold air or put a jacket around it and use FST or pro boost or whatever all will improve it but not completely cure it.

My phone still wouldn't let me upload to that website so have tried to put some in an album on my personal Facebook page. Hope this link works.

Used carbs come up all the time on Ebay and the float bowl gaskets should be listed under 'mikunu' on Ebay or (surprisingly) Amazon. You need to get the model number off the carb but it is probably a 38mm.

These guys in Nottinghamshire were really helpful when I needed parts:

The holes are the oil pipe connections for the carb heater. You will need new 10 mm copper washers to make the unions oil tight. If it is petrol leak, you need a new float bowl. Are the 'cracks' real or are they cosmetic casting marks and what was the 'fix' by the previous owner? Was it to fix (badly) a cracked float bowl? As mentioned before you can pick up second hand carbs on ebay quite cheaply if you need a new float bowl. I bought a brand new set of carbs on ebay for £100 to avoid having to refurbish my knackered set. Not bad considering a carb gasket set times two is £100.

Thanks Dennis.

I have washers and new Oil Lines on order.

I will get a pic uploaded when I have finished work about 8 tonight to show the bad fix and the state of the leak. They are cracks, I washed her on the Sunday, and when I upload the other pics you can see how much leaked out by the Tuesday evening.

I am keeping an eye on a few on ebay at the moment, one is currently going for £21 with 3 days left. Fingers crossed I can get that but it wont be with me till around teh 19th :/

Looking at your photos, the " cracks " in the float chamber look like casting marks to me, so as already mentioned, all that should be required here are new copper sealing washers on the oil pipe banjo to stop the oil leak. The float chamber flange gasket needs to be changed to eliminate the fuel leak as well.
The other thing I notice is that the carb has an electrical heater plug in it, which indicates that the carb has been changed from original at some point in its life, because you wouldn,t have both the heater plugs and the oil heater pipes on the same carb. Your heater plug doesn,t appear to have a cable feeding power to it anyway, so it,s doing nothing. However, this won't affect the normal operation of the carb once you have got everything sealed up nicely.

maybe if you use both oil heater and electrical it may cure icing completely? :)

Urghh. Looks nasty that, is that liquid metal? If it wasn't cracked there would be no need to have bodged it so the DPO obviously thought they were cracks

Thanks Doork, I'll let my friend know and, fingers crossed I get the washers and new lines this weekend, will try that and let you know.

Thanks for doing the pics Dirty! :)

Darren I believe it is. When we had it in his garage it just flaked off in his hand.
