I did not ride last week as it was kind of icy, but being fed up of the tube, I was back on my Monster this morning.
Trouble is first gear seems to have disappeared !
I started up OK, warmed it up a bit then, put it into first and set off. Next time I needed to change down to first, it wasn't there.
I stopped several times and it would not go to neutral or first, just stayed in second.
It went back into first once while I was travelling and also just before I stopped at work. Otherwise it just would not go. Clutch in, toe down was like pushing my foot down on the floor, no give.
Any ideas ? it's a 2001 M600 btw.
I know I haven't ridden for a week, but I'm sure I haven't forgotten how to change into first !

Clutch.
Check all aspects of the clutch, starting with the fluid. Could be low or contaminated (Mine boiled on the dyno and went grey and oily then did the same as yours). If that is ok and it isn't leaking check the clutch plates if you can. Let us know how you get on..

It might be your selector lever set up thingy, mine went on my way down to the isle of white rideout.
on my way home i found that if you were say, in second, and you wanted to go down to first, pull the clutch in, lift the gear selector up half a notch (if you know what i mean???) then go down a full notch and you should find first.
failing that or what Spacemonkey said, i havent got a clue

I'm about to ride it home, so I'll try the "half a notch up n down" method
I'm not sure I'm up to examining the clutch, but I'll check the fluid and see if there is anything obvious.
It's due for it's 12,000 mile service soon anyway, so I maybe I can get it checked out then.

Sounds like the selector spring....
Not unknown amonst Ducati owners....

errr yeah right....
it was better on the way home, but still not right. not as springy (I'm great with this technical stuff)
anyway how do I get this selecta fing fixed ? is it a pricey thing ? well of course it is a Ducati so I expect the spring retails at around a grand or so....
Lee have you still got any space in Feb for your discount servicing ? :lol:

The springs are only a few quid. Labour is about 20 hours...:lol:

An update.
Have been off the bike for a few days, back on today.
Everything was fine. No gear problems at all.
Weird. Do these springs unstick themselves ?
Do I still need to get it/them replaced ?
