View Full Version : Recovered my stolen S4, need advice

Hi all, as above. Had the 2002 Monster S4 for a total of 3 weeks before it was taken 2 weeks ago while enjoying an amazing holiday.
I'll keep the story short, bike stolen, less than 24 hours later it was offered to my nieces boyfriend for £300!
Police were useless, close family risked themselves by going to 'view' my bike then called the police to retrieve it.
Quite a bit of damage, they never got it running.......flat battery that I was planning to replace!

Anyway, time to see if you lovely people can help me get this S4 back on the road.

Below is a diagram of the main damage to the bike that I'm concerned about, it's where the ignition used to be and the bracket is half sheared off. I know some bloody talented welders and am wondering if it's possible to get the bracket from somewhere?

Thanks, it's the circled bit.

Thieving Scumbags!!!

Glad you got the bike back though.

If the bracket is only 'half sheared off' can it not be bent back in place and then welded?

Half sheared, as in half of it is missing fella.

Any idea if I'd need to cut the part from a knackered frame?

I might have a knackered frame to take the bit from if you get stuck

Yea, glad you got it back. Why on earth did they need to break that? They could just remove the lock surely? It wouldn't have run without the key to turn of the immobilizer anyway, idiots!

Would be the easiest way, you wouldn't be able to buy that part, could get one made but a cut-off and weld-on would be easier.

You do need to strip quite a bit of stuff off the frame though and repaint afterwards as the preparation and welding will remove some paint.

If you want it perfect then you need to completely strip the frame, repair it and then get it powdercoated.

Thanks for the advice and kind words chaps.
I thought chopping it from a scrap frame would be the best bet, it'll need repainting/powdercoating again anyway due to the heavy handed oiks.

Pompone, how much would you want for the bracket fella?

I'll do a project thread when I start to make it pretty again.

Is there any other damage?

Is there any other damage?

Plenty, but my insurance excess is crazy, and would have to pay the full premium up front as I was paying monthly.
Gives me something to do over the winter months, best way to learn about a bike is to rebuild it. It's my first Ducati (and my first vehicle theft) so plenty to learn.
I have seen the bike briefly after my brother in law recovered it. Ignition barrel screwed, afore mentioned bracket knackered, tank scratched and slight dents in it. rear seat shell cover scuffed.

A lot of cosmetic stuff really, like I mentioned, the bracket being sheared is my main concern. Other parts can just be unbolted, tidied up and refitted.

Make a donation to UKMOC and we call it even. Just let me check tomorrow that is the same shape. Could you take a picture please?

The bike is being stored in a secure location, I'll get over there soon as poss for pics and measurements.
Much appreciated Pompone, much appreciated. :)

Stupid insurance is not worth a w@nk...!!

Main thing is that you have the bike back. Not the best reason in the world for a makeover but you sound positive about doing it, and it will be a good way of healing the unseen scars too.

I am assuming that the thief/theives have been caught?

I hope there is a succesful prosecution and a very harsh sentence....Bide your time and wait till the case is heard and then make sure your local papers know all about it....Name and shame.

A slap on the wrist for the owner for being careless and allowing people to steal his property and then having the gall to expect the police to do something about it! :fou:

Is that a dig fella?

Sorry sarcasm batteries are running low :)

Just been to see the bike, now had a look at it without the red mist of rage blinding me!
Bracket that I'm worried about is fine, bolt sheared in it, just needs drill and tap.
Main issue now is my completely mullered ignition barrel, missing catch for the tank and top yoke screwed from having the steering lock broken.
I'm assuming a new matched barrel can be obtained from Ducati? Am I likely to be bent over on the price does anyone know?

Tank looks a bit sorry for itself, big scratch down one side and a 50p sized dent on the corner. Bloody bike is SMOTHERED with forensics fingerprint powder.
As far as I know the police took 2 oiks away, one is being investigated further but as luck would have it the investigating officer is on holiday till next week.

Don't worry guys, justice WILL be served!

Keys have transponders built in to bypass immobiliser. They are matched to ECU and the bike won't start without this. You'll either have to replace the lock with one to match original keyset, or buy a new ignition lock + keys and get them re-coded to the immobiliser. I think you need the original (red) master key to do this

Hahaaaaaaaaaaaaa, student humour!

Yeah, sorry, still a bit jetlagged from Vietnam.
I have all of the original keys including the red one, previous owner kept everything for it!
So what would I need to do, take red key to a dealer and say 'me need barrel'?

Thanks again for the help and advice guys. Restoring my faith in humanity here :)

i would look for a cheap lock barrel with key on ebay (you only need the one working key)
eg this one (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LOCK-SET-IGNTION-SEAT-LATCH-DUCATI-S4R-S4-MONSTER-M900-02-Y-/110823352509?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19cd9628bd)

key blanks can be bought off ebay and the immo chip that is enclosed in the key head can be swapped to you new key

only downside is you would need old key for the fuel cap

of you could find a lockset with the fuel cap eg
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-Monster-800-Lock-Set-2003-2004-2005-2006-Ignition-Switch-Gas-Tank-Key-/290834375744?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43b7146440

Thanks Funkatronic, been waching some keys and barrels on ebay, just hate the idea of a different key for every lock. I'm going to give some dealers a bell and see whats what. But thanks for the suggestions.

I should have a set from an M600. Not sure if they are suitable? I can check if anyone can confirm

Funkatronic
10-10-2014, 12:47 PM
if you buy one of those complete sets (ignition, seat and fuel cap) and transfer the immo chip you wont need different keys for each lock

you could buy the cheaper sat and put a quick release fuel cap on there but this is not so good if you leave the bike on the street much (although i ran with a QR cap for 2 years and never had fuel stolen)

a good auto locksmith should be able to dismantle the new lock barrel and replace the levers to fit your key

if the old levers from you exising lock are not too trashed this might be an option for you but best to speak to a locksmith

Thanks for the suggestions guys, want to hear something funny?

Called Ducati Coventry, Barrel £300, Code matched ECU £800, Code matched clocks £800 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just bought the lot and complete lock and key set from ebay, Just under £400.

Also noticed on the recovery invoice, it has the address of where the bike was picked up from........oops!

the metal art of key comes out with little tray for the chip

Had a bit of good news. The retard that tried to sell my bike has been charged!
Hopefully get to see the scumbag squirm in court.

Also got the major parts of the 'get the S4 back on the road' puzzle on their way to me.

*Happy Dave dance :D

Judging by your avatar, if the law don't treat the scum bags " fairly " they should be quaking in their shoes.

And....he knows where said scumbag lives.

I'm sure many will share the passion with which I hate bike thieves.
Still worse when they're prepared to deprive you of your pride and joy and then sell it for mere pennies.
I suppose I hope that they learn the error of their ways.
But painful retribution also has its attractions.

Glad to hear that the bike's on the mend.

Wheels are in motion with the 2 other herberts that actually stole the bike too.

Just a thought but if you really are going to be metering out your own personal form of physical justice then probably not the best idea to post about it on a public forum.
