In this, the Centenary year of the start of the First World War, the Royal British Legion have set up a campaign to remember every one of the service men and women that gave their lives during the conflict.

It is extremely hard to imagine the scale of that mobilisation these days but here are some sobering facts to ponder-

5.7 million men and women served during the conflict.
65000 suffered shell shock.
170,389 were taken prisoner
1,662,625 British service men were wounded (mostly amputations, respiratory or blinded).
772,000 service men died.
*I appreciate these figures seem to vary depending upon the source and does not take into account of Empire or Allied Nations.

So whether you know or not, who in your family served (every single family in the UK had someone either serving or working for the war effort) please either remember them or remember someone not lucky enough to have surviving family here:

We lost a load on my mums side so I'll ask her for some names. Gran was 1 of 19 and I think the 2 wars took about 7 of them in all!
