Is this really a dealer only job??

No not at all. You just need some sockets or good spanners and a big c spanner. You dont even really need a paddock stand. Undo the 2 pinch bolts on end of swingarm. Big c spanner behind the rear sprocket and gently turn to adjust slack to the guide on the sticker on swingarm. I think its something like 27mm slack top to bottom but check the decal. Thats with the bike on ground under load on suspension . Then when satisfied torque up the bolts again and lube it.

As Albi says, it's the easiest job on the whole bike.
The reason it's 'dealer only' is because Ducati didn't supply a C-spanner in the toolkit with which to adjust it.
I bought a 916 toolkit which has one included (if you get one check the dealer price first because they used to be about £15- much cheaper than on ebay or similar, though don't know if it's still available or what price they may be now)

The pinch bolts need to be torqued up properly

Which is why Ducati say it's a dealer only job - on the 916 series, many people overtightened the pinch bolts (the required torque is less than you might think) and this can lead to bearing failure. So, to avoid this they took the spanner out of the tool kit and told you to go to a dealer, the bonus for Ducati is they get to save a quid on the tool and charge you for adjusting the chain - double win!.

But adjusting the chain on the single-sider is a revelation after messing with conventional swingarms - no more measuring and wheel alignment just adjust and go.

Just so long as you do not over rotate it:rolleyes:
