The S4R decided to throw a wobbler last night... just planning a ride out with mates to the Cotswold for chips, I left work early only to have the voltage control regulator meltdown on me. BUGGER a two mile push or as a member lets ring the yellow van team, well that was eventful... whilst stood on a gravel patch at the side of a country lane I rang them nine times over the next 4.5 hours they seemed to loose my breakdown a number of times, my eta kept on being delayed because apparently they were overly busy on this beautiful quiet evening, and the recovery agent didn't get their communication to recover me so another delay of 1.4 hours.... then they sent someone from Scotland to rescue me. (Not really but it would have been quicker) Not impressed but I did eventually get home at 10pm. And to add insult when they turned up the guy said how quite his day had been :fiery:

Anyway not wanting to loose track of why im sharing this, does anyone know if this Voltage Control Regulator is a common fault and idea of costs, also, is it just a matter of replacing it under the seat and all is well or will it have caused consequential damage elsewhere?
Any advice will be much appreciated and I wont share it with the AA as they would only loose it...lol

Thanks

Its a fairly common thing on Ducatis, esp the later Monster where it is under the seat and cannot get a cooling air flow. You can buy a relocator kit from TPO which moves it but you need to ditch the crankcase breather oil catch tank under the seat and fit a K&N filter.

Replacement regulators can be fairly expensive, M&P want about 65 quid, Ducati will want nearer to 150 quid!

Some on here have upgraded to the more reliable MOSFET type but you'll need to chop and change the connectors to fit one. I'm sure if you search on here you'll find detailed threads on how to upgrade to MOSFET.

Yup mine cut out whilst in the fast lane of the M4 a couple of years back on my old S4Rs... AA were slightly better for me then (Although not that much)... pretty common that they go eventually. Straight swap tends to sort it...

This is probably the same as yours

Check the connectors but this looks the same also.

Its probably just the reg/rec, but I would advise checking the complete charging system, just to be sure, otherwise there's a chance of frying the new reg/rec.
You'll need a cheap multimeter and the following guide.......

https://www.electrosport.com/media/pdf/fault-finding-diagram.pdf

I've heard it said that the multiconnectors to the reg/rec are not really up to the job.
Mine melted, even with a new reg/rec (mounted in the airflow below the bottom fork yoke) and a charging system which checked out as healthy.
I have since hard-wired the reg/rec using bullet crimps and glue-lined shrinkwrap and have had no further problems to date.

Great reply's... thankfully not a major problem by the sounds of it. I can get my anodised clutch kit with what I save...happy days!
