Bought some cheap bar end mirrors off ebay with the intention on putting them on my M600 Mongrel

Arrived pretty quick from Hong Kong, But was hit with an extra bill of just over £11
VAT (£3) and Handling fee from the post office (£8), Barstewards
The quality is OK, nothing special
The expanding bolt fixing which inserts into the handlebars is next to useless, So I ended up using the fixings that the original bar ends used
Everything else seems to clamp up ok, so I decided to try them on the S2R
I think they look ok, but time will tell if they stand up to normal use

Looking good Al, as you may remember I have the CRG versions on my bike which work great but the 'Hong Kong specials' don't look much different and the price difference is huge, plus the CRG don't come with the bar-end fitting as standard.

I'll be interested to see how they perform.

I have one fitted to my S4, been on for a few years now, for what it is, its fine paint is flaking off slightly but for the initial cost cant complain

Blimey I've had loads of stuff from China but never been hit with VAT and handling. Only from US stuff.

Since the 'downturn' in the economy HMRC are much keener on import VAT than before and you rarely get away with it now, they also reduced the threshold at which it's payable.

Got to be seen to be tough on tax evasion (by stamping on the little man)...

I had some Chinese levers arrive last week, about the same price as Fatals mirrors and no Vat thankfully. Will be aware now though.

I did check online (after) I was left the card in my letterbox about the charges, and you a liable for VAT for anything over £15 including postage and packaging costs
When I picked the mirrors up from the sorting office, I had a good moan at the bloke, who said it was the Starbucks effect
Big companies are dodging billions in VAT bills, so they are going after the small fry to compensate
What really pissed me off was that of the just over £11, only just over £3 of it was for the VAT
£8 was pocketed bye the post office for admin
I suppose now the Post Office is private company they have to milk us as much as they can

It says on their eBay ad that they will mark it as a 'gift'. Did they not do that or did the PO and HMRC just ignore it?

Don't know, will have to jump in dustbin to recover packaging and check
I know it stated price in dollars

If they didn't do what they stated on their ad might be worth holding back on the feedback for a while and complaining to them, see what happens.

OK Managed to climb back out of the bin:thumbsup:
Yes they had ticked gift, but if you look at the label I would assume customs took one look and thought, thats not a gift you have bought it:worried:

Indeed it is, consider the CRG version are £90 not including the bar end.

Yes still a good price. I'd be annoyed at the seller though. I just checked my wrapper and, like yours, gift is ticked but value was put at $15. Looking at today's rates your $26 = £15.52 whereas $25 would have been £14.92 and under the £15. That said the label does say only imported gifts over the value of £36 should attract VAT grrr :banghead:

If it was really a gift, would it not be addressed from your old long lost granny ;)
I would guess Customs are getting wise to the gift trick

Granny 五年我没有忘记 often sends me shiny gifts.

In fact Chinese people in general are very generous. Everyday literally tons of 'gifts' arrive in the UK from China. :mand:
