I am thinking of something to do with chopping the sub frame on my 796

Any one know the legality with this?

How much can I chop if any and what would i need to do to satisfy the MOT man or who ever that it is still a safe bike?

What are you actually thinking of doing?

Making it a single seat.

Not sure if it will work or even look nice.

I need to get on photoshop.

But, seeing as I can't use photoshop I figured it would be quicker to ask if I am legally allowed to do it before I learnt how to make pretty pictures!

That's kinda what I was thinking.

But you know, getting a pro to do it.

Do you have pics of what it will look like or ideas or something?

Good, stop thinking. It gets in the way if doing. :)

Get lost, I'm a pro. In a different field but I'm a pro ;)

No, but I have a magic marker and an hacksaw. I also have ideas, most of them would get me arrested thought

I know one or two who could do it (in Cornwall though) as they make and modify frames for motocross and the like. I think your insurance company would require an "engineers" report and you'll prob find that the "normal" insurance companies won't touch it.

That said easy job to do

Its a subframe .....NOT Structural.......Chop as much as you like as long as the seat is fixed firmly afterwards the MOT man will not care.

Jonzi I'll happily have a look once a couple of projects got out if the way..

The problem GT is that the subframe doubles as the rear shock mounting point.

So you have just found the limit of where you can cut up to!!! Still don't see an issue

It's no different to doing a tail chop on an old Monster, does anyone inform the insurance company if they do this?

Is it a bolt-on subframe? if so get a spare and modify that just in case you don't like it afterwards...

Legally as the question asks, the angle and size of the number plate and fitment of a reflector and the lights are all that's needed to be right. But then that also vary considerably to where you take it!

I have a cheap subframe on watch on ebay.

Would be good to drop the engine out of the bike anyway, can give it a good clean then.

Maybe change the rear shock and front end whilst I am at it.

New bike!

You're modifying the frame, whether its the main frame or not you should inform your insurance company. The same goes for tail chops. Your only giving them an an excuse to refuse a claim if you don't. As the subframe doubles as a shock mount, they'll deffo be interested.

As a rule, the don't mind bars, bodywork, pipes and lights, anything else and you should tell them, even if it doesn't increase your premium they'll know and you'll be covered.

Your choice, but it could save you loosing out big time.
