View Full Version : Run out

Had a decent run out on the 900 today, big smiles all round!

Popped in to Moto Rapido and something occurred to me looking round at the bikes in the parking area and showroom. There was a good selection of all the new bikes there but the one that stood out? A beautiful 888 SP, stunning looking bike and sounded awesome. Spent more time looking at that than anything else.

That's when it occurred to me that I'm not sure the new bikes really float my boat to be honest. I like the Pikes Peak 'Strada, but I doubt I'd buy any of the other models, 1200 Monster included. The 1200 looks massive, I thought it was a Diavel at first glance but that is really big!! Panigale's are very pretty but beyond my talent (and wallet!!) and while Hypermotards are a giggle for about 15 minutes, my last ride on one left me with a sore neck.

Old school Dukes all the way! Must be getting old!

Anyone got a cheap early SS they want to part with?!!

I think if I limited myself to bikes that were within my talent I'd have to sell the scooter! :dunce::D

Ditto, and I would still be on my James Captain.

Agree entirely.. in fact I'd like a late carb 900ss at some point, or my hair brained idea of fitting old 900ss body work/tank and seat unit to a newer injected 900ss frame/engine as they are very similar and the tank is the same underneath... this would give me best of both worlds IMO.

See my seperate post after a recent business visit to the factory.

Absolutely nothing exciting to look at on the line. Plastic everywhere, no innovation (design wise). You could almost smell the Bratwurst :>). Cagiva era back all the way for me.

Worryingly this stirred my loins a bit the other week...

I agree to a point too although if money no object I would have to have a couple of new(ish) bikes along side my '97 M900, '65 Mach 1 racer and '78 P200E Vespa.

Why not go for the best of both worlds when it comes to Nortons though?
This was up at the Ace Café last Sunday:

OOh, saucy..!

Strangely, I find myself hankering after a Harley Sportser turned into a cafe racer, Honda Magnas and even Enfields.....

Must be an age thing.

I don't feel the urge to buy any of the of the latest Ducati's, i like the 90's style 900ss, 851's 888's, I'm sure the modern dukes are great bikes to ride but they leave me a bit cold, I really like the 70's and 80' italian stuff, Darmahs, Pantah, Jota's, SF750's, Morini 350's, Guzzi le mans etc. I'm far more interested in how a bike makes me feel (the experience) than its ultimate performance. Basically all the poster bikes of my teenage years.

I agree too.
There's little new by any manufacturer which really does anything for me actually.
I do like all the new Nortons though, and feel a similar stirring on sight of the Domiracer.
The only other recent new bike which has affected me was the evo......in black.
Unless you count the evo engined NCR M4.One Shot, which made me go all gooey.
In the real world, I fancy a naked 900ss, if I'm being greedy.
But basically, my M750 is perfect for my needs.
I think I'll just concentrate on making that better.

Saw a Royal Enfield dealer about to open the other day. Damned if I can remember where though, Hackney maybe?

I spend way too many hours scheming to try and find a way that I could have one just like this little beauty

http://youtu.be/DrukZIqDbMg

Set to 720p and turn the sound up, way up! Audio comes in after the slide show and gets good at 2:33 but the hair on the back of my neck stands up at key audio points 3.44, 5:14 and 6:36

I think had I been on that bike, on that ride, I'd pretty much have been in the place they call heaven - love it. If anyone knows how I get my Evo to sound like that please tell me

Easy - chop the zorst off and drill holes in the cases so it makes lovely mechanical noises and does oil wees everywhere - simples !

I really like those modern Nortons that look like cafe racers but have Ohlins and monobloc callipers. Can't remember the model but they look awesome and have modern running gear

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I have a new project waiting in the wings - my Dad has a Triumph t140 Bonneville he is passing on to me. It's a 1974 US spec bike with a peanut tank and ape hangers. Not 100% my cup of tea but too good to turn down! Now I'm in two minds what to do with it, finish restoring it (it's complete and reasonably original) or do something a bit interesting like a flat tracker.

Decisions, decisions!!

I saw one up at Boxhill and I don't think they are built to be used, rusty bolts and brackets everywhere, not what I expected for the price:thumbsdown:

Easy decision.....Just pass it on to me and I'll deal with it...:D

My second favorite bike after a Monster...Had a few of them.

The high bars will give you a speed wobble at 94MPH, but you can go through it.
Straight bars won't wobble and are much more comfy.
100 miles range with the US tank but they look gorgeous.

I think you may have the last of the right hand change models and it might be a 4 speeder too. They gained a gear when the lever went the other side. Those models were suffixed "V" for 5 speed.
I think you should have single cast disc on the front and a conical rear.

Lovely bikes...Feel free to interogate me.

This is what I'd like- saw it at last year's Custom Bike and Hot Rod show at Beaulieu, which is a great show on the Sunday when the hot rods arrive (and I usually have a stall selling sunglasses and hats..)

Naturally, my Monkeybike stole the show and I raised almost £100 for the British Legion by charging for photos on it. Great fun riding it around the grounds...

100mph, no brakes, no throttle, no gears...

There's a guy in Argentina built his own including the engine from scratch. In fact there's quite a cult of handbuilt repros, most searching for an ideal donor engine. Kits are only a couple of grand, but need a decent air cooled Vtwin.

I tell you what....its bloomin luverly owning my M750.
For me, all things considered, and being both sensible and emotional about it, there is no bike on the planet that I would rather own.
Its market value is under £2k now, and it depreciates not one jot anymore as the years go by, in fact it'll probably start going up in value before long. Not that it matters because I'll never sell it.
Servicing costs are minimal as I do all my own stuff and its an absolute joy to work on.
It still, after 7yrs of ownership, gives me a deeply satisfying buzz every time I take it out.
I even regularly fetch it out of the shed and park it outside the kitchen window just so I can gaze at it while I'm doing the washing up.
It returns over 50 mpg no matter how hard I treat it.
And, although I like all sorts of bikes, I never see one which makes me envious.
Even the wonderful NCR bike doesn't really fit the bill like my M750 does.
I've even written a song about it (and I've only ever written two).
Its become such a central part of my life now that I sometimes find myself wondering if I'm clinically obsessed......though I don't really care anyway.
But yes, its nice to know that one isn't the only one.

Loving the passion in that thread mate :-). I looked for a nice original silver M750 before I bought the M900 but I just couldn't find one.

The depreciation (or lack of it) is a good point too. Loved the brand new S4R I bought but because (like most people) I didn't get to use it as much as I wanted to, it just made me feel guilty as it sat there haemorrhaging money.

I now own two bikes which make better returns than if the money was sat in an ISA...no brainer :-)

Just stay away from them with the spanners Nat or they'll turn into a worthless pile of untidy bits!
