Hi all

Is it possible for me to change my riser handle bars to clip ons ? If so, is it worth doing and what are a good budget set to buy ? If thats not worth it i may buy a nice new set of risers, any ideas ?
The problem is im getting the mod bug lol.

Thanks for your time.

You can possibly just remove the riser blocks from the top yoke and stick some clip ons underneath the yoke

However, your yoke will look a bit poop.

Get a new top yoke

You might need to fiddle with brake and clutch lines too.

i have some new and unused factory racing clip ons for sale
http://www.bdsol.co.uk/monster/forsale/IMG_3939.jpg

i also have a yoke from an s4 (which used clip ons rather that full bar) so it looks nicer with clip ons fitted

That's funny....I was about to suggest those very clip-ons, but couldn't find a link on ebay.

I haven't studied the ad but the ace bars you suggest sound like they may well be just painted/powdercoated steel, which I would avoid like the plague.

Since you've got no adjusters on your fork tops to get in the way, you may be able to fit flat bars without much trouble, using the existing risers and clamp.
I've just done the same to my 750 actually.
Renthal do some nice, satin black, alloy ones for under 30 quid. I used to have some in the same finish (but with a slight raise, like the std bars) and it was really tough and looked great without being shiny.

Be aware that clip-ons come in varying degrees of raise.
Funkatronic's look to be about zero, but you can get 50mm raise quite easily.....which probably end up being in a very similar position to flat bars in the std clamps.

Watch out for low bars hitting the tank on full lock.....my flat bars were ok.....just.
You can adjust the lockstops, but there's precious little steering lock on a monster at the best of times, so any reduction is bad news.

Bike looks nice in black with the classic tank lettering, by the way.

Thankyou for your reply, i am very interested in your statement about the steel bars, just out of curiosity are steel bars no good ? does that mean alloy only ?

I've had clip ons on my S2R for years and I love 'em.
It is an easy mod and one you can do with your existing top yoke, even if its only to find out if you actually like having clip ons on a bike designed for standard bars.
Its worth a try.

You can source stuff thats originally specced for SS and ST models as well as monsters, also R1's and GSXR's as they use the same 50mm fork tube clamps and widen your search options a bit.

The trickiest part is fitting in the wires and hoses into a smaller space afterwards, you may need new hoses as the old ones may be too awkward to refit.

I did a whole lot of stuff at the same time including replacing my calipers, discs, clip ons and top yoke and also dropped the clocks and headlight for a more compact look.

Try it and see if you like it, you can always change back if you don't, things like a shiny new yoke can come later when you know you want one.

You may need to take a short course in man maths :)

Ah yes, and clip-ons can either go above the top yoke (if your fork legs stick out enough) or below it.

I wouldn't buy steel bars simply because of the potential for corrosion.
Though there's nothing particularly wrong with steel as a structural material.
Alloy might be a fraction lighter, but not much as the tube usually has a much thicker wall than its steel equivalent.
But mostly, I reckon anyone selling painted steel bars is doing a cheap job, so the general quality might also be low.

You may have to re-route the twin throttle cables slightly to get a smooth return as fitting lower bars tightens the bends in it....but persistence will ultimately succeed.
I used std everything when I fitted my flat bars......hoses, cables etc.

Personally, I'm not overly impressed with a lot of the billet yokes that I see.
It seems to me that they're often more about fancy machining to look good, than any improvement in strength or lightness.
In fact I've seen some that are weaker and have even cracked.
So I'm sticking with the std yokes.....though I may polish them at some stage.

I agree with that, I have found alloy ones aswel. So this is my plan, I'm going to try both clip on and a new set of bars. Ile try try them both out over the next few weeks.

And I'm now realising that DIRTY is rite, there is no budget when you own a monster lol

Well there can be a budget, but then you only spend all your time trying to find ways around it.
I do this most days.
So, its worth saying that one of the most cost effective mods I've done was to fit some billet levers like these....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Brake-Clutch-Levers-for-Ducati-Monster-M750-M750ie-M900-M1000-S2R-S4R-S4RS-/370946731199?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item565e25ecbf

They are a little heavier than the std levers, but a much nicer feel.
Their extra rigidity actually makes a surprising improvement to the feel of the front brake.
Plus they're span adjustable.....and they look better too.
I got short style ones in silver (so as to avoid the potential for darker anodising to fade).
Its still too early to comment on their long term performance, but I'm not expecting any issues.

While you're doing the bars you might as well, eh ? ;)
