Cleaning gauze filter on s4r

Just changed the oil & filter on my S4R ,but didnt realise there is also a gauze filter which should be cleaned,is it necessary to clean this on every oil change?& what does it do?is it for filtering any debris from the gearbox.

It catches the big lumps before they go too far around the motor, trashing the oil pump, blocking oilways etc.. the normal filter catches the finer stuff.

It's not a problem to get at so can be cleaned at routine oil changes. You'll also see if there are any worrying large bits of metal drifting about inside the motor hopefully before something major goes bad on you.
