View Full Version : Crash Bungs .. or not?

What is the view of those that may have been unfortunate enough to have tested them for real..

Worth the money? did it save anything expensive and prevent some tears and limit the wallet strain.. or are they more trouble than worth?

And of course- did it ruin the look of your bike having extra bits sticking out...

Any ideas or thoughts gratefully read.

Cheers

I have some fitted to my S4r and unfortunately tested them with a slow speed spill.
total damage was a scuffed gear change and nothing else, the bungs prevented the radiator and water pump housing meeting the road, in my opinion well worth the money.

Just price up the usual things wrecked in a drop - petrol tank, footrests, levers, engine covers etc..

A new tank is the best part of a grand on it's own

crash bungs are a good insurance policy

One other piece of damage prevention equipment that is very useful for a monster is a case saver, it fits infront of the front sprocket and protects the engine cases should a chain fail.

Put them on my s4r. Also useful as forward leg rests!

I'm going to have a look at PDQ shop in Taplow next week (just near the office) .. and then shop around unless they can do a deal.

Aero's look nicer.. my preference..

R&G are very well made and a popular choice if you can afford them.

They look like a good choice I didn't want to spend more than £50 but I may have to go more.

I have the aero's fitted to mine.

They do not look too bad when fitted to a monster.

umm and meh,

surely your just transferring the damage to another part of the bike ?

you could for example chip the engine cases just on the other side of the frame from the crash bungs ~:?

top tip don't drop it ;)

I think you would only damaged the frame in high impact(your bike would be smashed anyway), but for just a drop or slow riding damage it's a definite must have.

Used Carl when I was racing, and fitted a set on my wife's 620, she took a big tumble at around 70mph and the bike ended up down a big ditch, they saved a lot of damage to the bike. He is highly competitive.

a low speed spill and it just gently caressed the curb at the roadside

I think there's a lot of luck as to how you drop it

that said i will be fitting crash bars again when i get round to it

Not a fan myself, don't like the look of them, think they spoil the lines but can understand why people fit them.

Not a fan of crashing either, but then that's not 100% in my control.

Nor a fan of large repair bills.

But I'm keeping my naked neked :)

If you want forward leg rests you should get a Harley :running:

I'm tempted to go for the R&G Aeros. Didn't the S4 Challenge bikes have some sort of crash protectors? I read somewhere but have not seen any pics of what they were like.

"Crash bungs" suggests you are planning to crash... Just don't! ;)

I had them on the monster, engine, fork and swingarm protectors. Definitely good for piece of mind, and easily removable so you can sell them on for probably 50% of the cost if you ever sell the bike.

I have pretty much the whole R&G set on my Evo and they are always the first thing I get and I have only had one crash about 12 years ago. Defo worth it and I don't mind the look of them. Quite like them, makes it look a bit meaner I think.

I don't really even notice them anymore and I don't think other people do either, especially bikers. I think everyone is just so use to seeing bungs on bikes they don't jump out anymore as an add on It's kind of like when people started wearing helmets snowboarding, at first they looked odd but now everyone wears them you just don't notice them anymore. It's just the norm, like crash protection !!

The way I look at it is your asking the question so the answer is a big FAT YES. I do now but never liked them. My monster 1100s was new and wanted to keep it and glad I did after a slow fall within 5 weeks which may have saved my ohlins and termis.
