Hey,

whilst giving my Evo a quick clean down after a little ride yesterday i noticed on the top of the left hand side of the engine a few spots have appeared, at first i thought they where burnt tar or something but i am afraid to say its rust, well looks like it anyway.

The bike is only a couple of years old with less than 5000 miles on it and has never seen the rain since i have had it and has been protected with ACF50.

I am a bit worried about this spreading and the fact it is even there !!

Let me know what you think.

Cheers !!!

I don't think it will be rust as the cylinder heads are alloy, unless there is some metal in the paint. Oil staining maybe?

Sel it now while it still retains some value.. by the end of next week all the engine case paint will have fallen off.. ;)

Hahaha. It's hard to get in at it but I have tried removing it with a few lotions and potions and it is going nowhere.

It maybe just oxidation under the paint, I think heat will encourage it and it would certainly get hot there on an air cooled lump and the lacquer will be preventing you from shifting it. If you've already tried petrol/paraffin and brake/clutch cleaner on it?

Burned ACF 50 perhaps (?) which does look a bit like a rust - I have it on mine.
Wouldn't worried.

Gunk is quite effective too.

Yep most likely oil or oil burnt on from oil based cleaning products, petrol or brake cleaner may shift it?

wezrvf I cant see anything either...if you give me something in the pic to home in on as to the marks your seeing, I'll do a compare and contrast against mine tomorrow to see if there are signs of anything similar - mines been treated with ACF50 as well.

10,000 miles on my 2.5 year old evo and I don't have a spot of rust on it. It's been drenched frequently and ridden during winter as well. The only imperfections I have to note are a few small spots where the engine paint is starting to flake...maybe a handful about 2mm in diameter, but they're at the front of the engine where it gets hammered. They can be touched up with some color-matched engine paint, so I'm not worried about the finish so far :-)

Incidentally, I wash my bike with water, but use copious amounts of fs365 and gt85 on it.

Do what I do and just ride the ****ing thing instead of cleaning it. The dirt will hide all manner of sins.

:D

p.s. I can't see anything either.

If you look on the back of the casing just tote right of the lead you can see a few brown spots.

Maybe I am being a bit too anal.

If you like it just so, you'd NEVER ride a bike outside.

You need a new engine.

I'll take the old dirty soiled evil one off your hands in exchange for a bag of monster munch and half a packet of rolos?

I'd say burnt oil, may have seeped of the nut when has been removed for the locking tool(have you had your belts changed?). Wouldn't worry about it too much as I had to look at it on a 27" screen to even notice it..
