Round washers would save a little more though... ;)

When added to other mods to the engine alone its over a kilo and is part of the 40kg reduction so far. So maybe not so mad.

The washers are D shape to prevent them from rotating during the tightening process. The flat on the washer engages with a flat milled on the head.

I know, but I'm not convinced it makes any difference?

I believe Ducati even use round washers on later bikes, although that maybe for another kind of saving... ;)

You keep going matey. I think your doing a great job at your own expense. Its your money and its no doubt a bike you want to keep.
Where else can you save some then.

You can save almost everywhere, many tiny savings add up.

Look after the .grams and the grams look after themselves and eventually grow into kilos. Of course by that time I've put on weight in equal measure but it's a net saving :)

I'm working on a 220mm rear brake set up from Thorsten Durbahn in Germany, 1.5kg off and most of that rotating and all of it unsprung.

Next year will be CMC front discs a couple of kg and all rotating unsprung.

A new titanium exhaust is under fabrication in Italy and will save a couple more kilos.

I anticipate the weight wet less fuel to be in the low 150's.

And the engine is making 135 RWHP

Oh dear, Rob. I don't think you should have shown him those carbon cam covers.

I've never cut titanium before and I was expecting a struggle, but in fact it wasn't nearly as hard to grind and file as I was expecting.
I have no idea what particular grade it was though...maybe other grades are tougher.
Next week I have some small bushes to make in titanium for Oz. I'm rather looking forward to having a go at those now.

Personally, I think that light weight is the holy grail for motorcycles.
I'd rather improve my bike by reducing its weight than by extracting more power from the motor.
Both are directly proportional to acceleration, but light weight has so many additional advantages in the handling stakes, and has no forfeit in terms of engine reliability/flexibility.
Those who were amongst our party that visited the NCR workshop will confirm my views, as they will have heard my moans of ecstacy when I sat on their super-light M4-One Shot (with its bog standard 1100evo motor).

Uk I know that I am talking about a time where you have run out of KG tro get rid off, run out of Grams to get rid off and started killing .xx grams or I thinki miligrams it is?

This was from the first build, there have been incremental improvements since.

Currently it sits in component form in the front room of my house, I will commence reassembly soon just a few detail changes to the new aluminium frame then off to the powder coaters.

I like the bike Capo..And I regret not making it over to see you last year..Maybe this..?

I am a little puzzled that you mentioned getting your alloy frame powder coated, for a couple of reasons.

Given your quest for lightness, I think that powder coating is a relatively heavy finish, it actually goes on quite thick.
Aluminum is also quite hard to powder coat compared to steel, for various reasons, the main being that it does not hold the heat very well during the procces, and the finish is often not so good.

There are a couple of lighter options. One would be just to polish it, but that would not be very easy to look after.
Another would be to anodise, but I have absolutley no idea if that would be affordable.

My choice (and it isn't my frame anyway..!!) Would be a coat of zinc chromate primer and a light base coat with lacquer over..

None of my business of course, but just curious about the choice of powder coating..

That's the next improvement maybe, thinner paint? Lovely bike too and very impressive spec, is that a carbon tank? I thought my Foggy was tricked up, bloody hell, think again Although I am on the look out for a nice S4R motor to drop in mine. BTW did you have the mag clutch casing re-chromated etc, I have one the same but no-one round here will touch it. It just needs a good strip and clean up. Could you recommend anywhere? Ta

Yes it is a carbon tank, the only plastic left is the breather vent tank and I'm working on that.

Actually I just had it powder coated by http://tpcs-magnesium-refurbs.co.uk/ they can rechomate.

Sometimes practicality wins over weight. I have found powder coat to be a durable finish and have coated many aluminium parts including swing aram, engine cases, radiators and oil coolers with no problems.

I could have had it anodised by the guy that made it, but that would close the door on any future mods and inevitably it would get scratched and look shi tty after a while.

Thank you for your comments. I hadn't realised that some people have not seen the bike. This year I will be at the East Kirkby and Fenman events and WDW.

The bike made the final 5 in the WDW 2010 garage contest and was on the Ducati stand, for me this was a significant achievement.

I'm hoping to shed a few kilos on the track bike. Nearly crapped myself when I saw the price of some of the unobtainum fasteners though. Think I'll downsize my fried breakfast instead - far more affordable option

Cheers for the heads up Capo. I will check them out for sure. Did you have a clear coat or colour?

Not seen a mag alt cover for these ever, a couple of early 916/888 ones but nothing for the later 3 phase bikes. I guess you're looking too?

So you have carbon air box too?, would so love to ditch the plastic lunch box on mine but so far have only seen the lids in carbon.

I have seen a three phase unit but most of what you see are single phase.
The problem with magnesium on the water cooled is corrosion, running plain water as mandated by the racing regs, corrodes them to useless in a season. Actually it one of the reasons I run Evans coolant as it is non conductive and therefore eliminates the galvanic component, but I was not quite quick off the mark to get the unit I saw.

My mag cover has been powder coated black to match the engine.

Max can get you one of these
