I have a M1100 EVO that I took to France recently and found motoways a little uncomfortable so I have been looking at touring screens but wondered if anyone had tried them and if they offer much more protection?

:p

That thing above the headlamp is a style thing and just messes up the clean airflow over the front.

Fit some Bar End mirrors and lose the fairing and you will end up with half the wind noise as with all of it fitted and almost no buffeting which makes motorways far less tiring.

Rick

Or stay off the motorway and find some nice D roads. :)

Personally have never found the standard screen an issue at LEGAL speeds on the motorway - in France that'll be an indicated 88mph on the EVO (81) - and so I find it keeps the speed down naturally.

Never tried removing the standard screen though - good call, Rick.

I taken my screen off the other day and it exposes all the wires on the back the clocks.

I guess you will need to buy some kind of cover plate to takes the place of the screen if you did want it removing.

Cobra - Are you saying that removing the screen causes less buffeting ?

Cheers

Hi Wez

For me much less buffeting but I'm 6'1" ish (seem to be shrinking at 50+ :( )

You should have got the Speedo cover piece with the bike.
Try your local Ducati dealer as they don t all give them out.

Parkie's (Parkinson's) Gave me a cover free when I asked about it :)

Ah intresting.

Will try that.

Might try it without the screen, seems like an afterthought !

I bought a Puig extended fairing screen. Added about 10 mph to the comfortable touring motorway speeds.

Sorry to hijack the post.

Just called Ducati and you do indeed get the cover plate with the bike, they are going to look into why i didn't get one with mine.

Weird thing to give out with the bike. Maybe they are thinking a lot of people would remove the screens.

Everyone is different and what works for one may not work for someone else. I have no doubt that JPs screen serves its intended purpose, but a thing of beauty it isn't and maybe you don't need to do that to your bike.

This is what I have done to improve mine for high mileage riding i.e. Horsham to Malaga in 2 days.

I found that with the original bar grips my arms were too wide causing shoulder pain. Fitting Rizoma grips that have a dent for your thumb, forced my hands to be as narrow on the bars as they can be. This allowed me to bring my elbows in and relaxed my shoulders. I also found the grips more comfortable as they allowed my thumbs to be in a more relaxed position.

Lowered the bars by fitting the bar riser from an M1100 which is 20mm lower. This moved my weight forwards slightly taking weight off my backside making long rides a lot more comfortable. Not only does it drop me down slighty more out of the wind (only very slightly, I know), but it also puts me slightly more over the front of the bike giving me more feel for what the front is doing. It also cured the problem of the bar riser being reflected in the dash.

I find that with these changes I can sit at an indicated 85-95mph on motorways for as long as I want to. What I would say is that 15 years of riding naked bikes has seen my colllar size go from 15" to 16.5" so if you don't have a strong neck you still might find that a taller screen is best for you.

I really appreciate all of your thoughts and J.P thanks for the images as it gives me a much better idea of what the screen looks like fitted. It's not a hideous as I expected and as I would only use it when I am doing long distance it seems like a worthwhile investment if it will give me a bit more comfort on Motorways.

Suneye your suggestions are valued too but having just fitted heated grips unless I can find ones that have the thumb dent I am not likely to be replacing mine anytime soon. I love heated grips they make such a difference.

Clip ons, clocks lowered, no screen.

No problem until about 90 than it gets a bit buffety.

Here , have a look,

You know sitting behind the green thing is not technically an extended fairing screen :running:

At those speeds I have to use the fuel tank as a 'chest rest'. It's surprisingly comfortable :)

I have heard quite a few people have moved to the slightly lower bar risers from the 1100.

I bet 20mm makes a big diffrence on weight positioning.

Just compared them side by side & the one shown on the BS moto parts website is not as high IMHO.

On closer inspection, it's just a smoked version of the standard screen. Doh!

I'll get my coat.

I quite like the National Cycle and Skidmarx ones. As I commute at, uh, speed every day, I'm thinking of the Skidmarx one for Summer and the NC one, along with some bar guards for winter. Toasty.

I like the Fabbri screens - have one on the M900 and double bubble on the RSV
