Sods law,

Bikes been off the road for winter and took it out for its first spin of the year.
1st gears ok
2nd give needs a good pull on the gear shifter and third is the same.

Problem is I cannot get 4th, 5th or change down.
When I try down changing its as if the shifter is locked but when I lift it up, its floppy.

I think the selector spring has broken so looks like another strip down.

I did remove the external shifter over winter and it may not have been put back in the same position. Could this be the problem?
I've tried adjusting but it makes no difference.

Sounds more internal than external, but I would double check for anything obvious before stripping motor

Unexpected floppiness, not one of the better surprises you can gave.

Recheck the external parts first, hopefully it'll be really simple.

Sounds like you've answered your own question.

Sounds like the return spring has broken

^^^^ what he said. Spring's about £5 plus another £10 for a tube of 3bond gasket. It'll take a couple of hours to do. Oil needs draining, the worst bit is getting the alternator off and on (about 190ftlb from memory) need to make sure the washer behind it doesn't slip before you tighten it up too.

I'll strip the bike down this weekend.
I did the same on my sons bike about 6 months ago - temped to take the easy route and get someone else to do the work for me.

The older you get the lazier you get!

Just before I begin taking things apart I was just wondering if the clutch could be causing the problem.
Over winter I stripped down the clutch and replaced the slave cylinder.
Just wondering if this might have something to do with my difficulty in changing gears?

If the clutch was the problem, I cannot understand why certain gears are OK and other's are not.
I would have thought I would have problems selecting any gear due to not being able to dis-engage the engine from the gearbox.
Any comments?

Is this thread a euphemism? :)

Was it okay for a while after the clutch work?
It certainly sounds like the gearshift return spring to me but checking out a dry clutch is going to take you less than an hour to put your mind at rest before you undertake stripping the other side.

wot they all said - sounds just like return spring broken. While you're at it you can check pawl is centered and that locking screws are tight. Congrats to all - 10 posts in and nobody mentioned Viagra :)

Seems my M900 has thrown another hissy-fit
- I have return on gear lever when changing down but not up
Drained oil (it was going to be done this month anyway)
Side casing off
Spring on the dog leg is ok but the one behind the adjuster seems to be deformed
- the "Shift Shaft Centering Spring"

Now as I have never had the rotor off nor the tools to do it (Torque wrenches up to 140Nm - need 190Nm
Is there any advice on how difficult this is to replace that spring

Tools: (Edits)
Obviously going to need bigger Torque Wrench and the 88713.0710 equivalent eg DUCATI Alternator Tool Pt No. 88713.0710

Personally I don't bother with the alternator tool, I stick a thin piece of aluminium between the starter motor gears. Never had a problem - so far. :)

Glad I bought the alternator tool as tightening the 157Nm on rotor was lifting the bike
(for some reason I was thinking it was 205Nm but Hayes, Ducati Manual and http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=373.0 all gave that value)
New springs, circlips, bellevile washer and alternator nut for about £20 from Ducati.

If you have confirmed that return spring was broken then unless shift shaft centering spring is also broken or action needs adjusting then I would leave well alone and re-assemble. The centering spring is pretty odd looking as standard : )

It was the "shift shaft centering spring" that had snapped - both springs replaced
