View Full Version : Flattrack - who'd like to have a go on UKMOC only day?

Some of you may have read about our Flattrack Training Day a few of us did the other week. Anyway, we all thought it was a great day and could possibly make an ideal event to do with the club. We've been in touch with Pete Boast who runs the school and they can offer us an exclusive day if we can get together 16 people who want to have a go. That will work out at £120 each, which includes the use of their bikes, steel shoe and food. As the venue availability at the weekends is difficult (it's an indoor equestrian centre), it will most likely be a Friday and as the Summer is pretty busy for most people, we thought a date in the Autumn might be better, especially as it's indoors and not affected by the weather.

For those of you who missed the post first time around and want some more info here's the link:

http://ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?t=46664

So if you're interested put your name down below, then once we have enough people interested, we can get back to Pete and finalise a date:

I don't see any reason why not! Put their names down and we'll see how many people we get in the end. I can't stress enough how much of a fun day this is, I think you'll all have a ball and learn something in the bargain!

In terms of the date, I thought a date in October might be good, subject to availability etc. I know it's all a bit vague, but once we know we've got the numbers we can get back to Pete and firm things up. Anyway let me know if anyone has any preferences.

I'm keen, but even though its not really that expensive, I'm not certain that I'll have the cash to spare when the time comes.
Could I go on the list on that basis ?
To be honest, the enthusiasm will probably find a way around the finances somehow. I just can't guarantee it at the moment.

Go for it Jeff, if it's a problem, I'm sure we can sort something out. Anyway, you've got a bit of time to get saving, why not put that kidney on eBay, you only need the one!

.... why not put that kidney on eBay, you only need the one!

Bottoms dropped out of the market since the horsemeat thing.

But yes, I think I should put my name down and find a tin to save in.
My sense of self preservation has always been a little too high to allow me to gain much experience of controling a sliding bike (and I grew up well before BMXs were invented).
But a bit of gentle pottering on a trials bike taught me the value of developing such skills, and in particular that it adds so much to your road-riding skills and confidence levels.
Dealing with a full-on, intentional, dirt-track powerslide is another matter entirely, and the chance to have a go at that in a safe environment ...with instructors... is just too good to miss out on.

I'll be a probable....seems a bit more positive than possible.

Not that it matters much, but I'd slightly prefer september as my 6months tax on the monnie runs out by october.
Its not a biggie though, as I can always re-tax it and then transfer any outstanding tax to the dommie once winter arrives.
But maybe there are others who have also only gone for 6mths tax this year, due to the lousy spring weather.
Why don't they offer 9mths tax for bikes ?

I've had an email back from Jackie at the Flat Track School, she's still trying to get some firm dates with the equestrian centre for October, but they're having some building work done in the Autumn (subject to planning permission) and they haven't been able to confirm anything with her yet. As soon as Jackie gets some definite dates I'll let you know.

The better news is we can have a few more than 16 on the course. There will be a slight reduction in track time, but I doubt if you'll notice. So if you fancy having a go put your name down.

As Jonzi said, your left leg is bound to ache but you may well be fine to ride. We cheated and went in the car and to be honest I was quite glad to be a passenger on the way home!

Depending on who's going, maybe a few of you can go up in a car together?

Can I still be a "probably ?
That's a cast iron guaranteed probably, not just your airy fairy kind..... it only depends on available funds.
Unfortunately, being October, it'll mean retaxing the monster (runs out sept) but I'm sure I can deal with that economically if I transfer the winter leftovers to the Dommie (or just come on that maybe).

Slightly reduced tracktime doesn't bother me at all ...it'll probably just mean that my left leg will stand more of a chance of being able to function on the ride back home.

So what kit would people recommend ?
I'm guessing that falling off repeatedly will be the order of the day if any worthwhile progress is to be made, so it stands a fair chance of looking a bit secondhand afterwards. But do the organisers have any specific requirements, like there are for trackdays ?
And will my normal, touring style road boots be knackered afterwards ?
Maybe a couple of cheap, e-bay purchases are in order.

They say in the literature leathers (one piece or 2 piece with full zip) or motocross kit but they didn't have a problem with some other kit on the day.

The flooring is an odd mix of fibre and a material like clay and caused no damage to my leathers during a couple of offs, a bit of cleaning was required. The surface absorbs impact quite nicely and low-siding was completely pain free and the surface also provides more grip than you might expect.

Hi Jeff

Just to reiterate what Andy said, you don't need any special kit. I wore some old leather jeans, my Gortex road jacket and some old Sidi road boots. I'd say your normal road gear would be fine, including bike boots, but not necessarily MX boots. I doubt if you'll trash anything so I wouldn't spend any extra cash. Does that help?

Great, add your names to the list. As I said before, we can have a few people over, it just means slightly less track time. If any one else wants a go, I'll start a reserve section now in case people drop out.

Now we've got our required number, I'll email Jackie, book the day and I'll get the deposit/details for everyone.

Hi J.P Not sure where you got that postcode from (don't say me!). Anyway, it's just outside Grantham, so not as far, just off the A1 (NG32 2EF). Here's the some info for the venue:

http://www.arenauk.com/contact-us.php

And here's the link to the school:

We did a Travelodge the night before, there's one about a quarter of a mile away (and loads more in the area too), if you wanted to do a stop over. Although from London it's doable as a there and back in a day job (the event starts at about 11am). Does that help?

OK everyone the Flat track training day is booked!

Saturday 12th October

The cost of the day is £120 per rider, which will need to be paid directly to the school. You will EITHER need to pay a deposit of £50 per person to reserve the place (with the balance being paid 10 days before the event) OR pay the full amount (£120) either option within the NEXT TWO WEEKS PLEASE!.

Jackie has provided me some payment options (cheques, direct payment or PayPal, which I can either PM to you or you can contact Jackie directly for:

peter.boast1[at]@btinternet[dot]com
01673 878426

When you get in touch please say you're on the UKMOC day on 12th October

Just so I can give a list of riders names to Jackie, can you put your full name next to your forum name below (unless you don't want to tell the world, in which case PM me!) and cut and paste into the next post. Also, when you've paid can you put PAID DEPOSIT or PAID IN FULL next to your name below

'You will need to bring your own protective clothing - leathers/ MX gear with protection, boots, helmet and gloves, we provide the steel shoes, along with the bikes, track, training in small groups offering a high ratio of instructors to pupils, with loads of track time.'

If you not sure about your riding gear either see the earlier post
http://ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?t=46755&page=4

or email Jackie directly, but as long as it's proper, protective road riding gear including boots, you should be OK.

Thanks for everyone who's signed up for the Flat Track Day. As a few people have dropped out we have a few places left for the date in October. Jackie has given us a bit more time to fill it through the club, but ONLY UNTIL FRIDAY 2 AUGUST. After that any spare places are open to the general public.

In case you don't know anything about flat track here's a brief run down when we did the same day at the beginning of the year.

http://ukmonster.co.uk/monster/showthread.php?t=46664

At the risk of repeating myself it's a great day where you'll learn new skills, not worry about damaging your bike, stay dry AND have the biggest grin on your face at the end of it (just ask Scrapps and BigOz!). This is the same sort of training Guy Martin was doing with Rossi at his ranch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsYwOGBiLxk

SO, IF YOU WANT TO MAKE THIS AN EXCLUSIVE UKMOC DAY PLEASE SIGN UP AND PAY YOUR DEPOSIT BEFORE FRIDAY 2 AUGUST. WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GET TOP LEVEL TUITION FOR ONLY £120 AND STILL HAVE FUN?

DON"T LET ME DOWN GUYS, YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!

Shuffy

And if you STILL don't believe me here's a great write up by the venerable Rupert Paul (below). And if this doesn't convince you I give up...

"If a passing stranger informed you that this time next week you could be sliding a motorcycle round corners like Nicky Hayden in the off season, you’d write him off as a dangerous lunatic.

Well, I am that lunatic. Because I am telling you, here and now, that anyone can learn the basics of this ultra-cool skill within about ten minutes. I have just watched 12 ordinary riders do exactly that (one of them was me). It was safe, affordable and ridiculously good fun. Best of all, it happened indoors.

OK, there’s a catch. For a novice, sliding a 230cc CCM turns out to be the most violent physical exercise you can imagine. So unless you are already some kind of hotshot dirt racer the Champions Training School (for that is its name) will leave you delirious with exhaustion. Specifically, the muscle that lifts your left leg up won’t work properly for four days afterwards. Did I care? No.

I loved every single second – and so did every one of my fellow students. The school is based at Arena UK in Grantham, just off the A1. It’s the brainchild of multi-discipline racer and track instructor Peter Boast, who got the idea through his friendship with seven-time US Dirt Track champion Chris Carr.

Over in the States, Carr uses huge agricultural sheds to run winter training camps for road and dirt racers. The UK version runs in a 20 by 48 metre equestrian event hall. “It’s always the biggest issue in winter: finding somewhere to bloody ride!” says Pete as he welcomes arrivals for the surprisingly civilised 10am start.

People are wearing motocross gear with armour, leathers, road riding textiles. He and double TT winner Steve Plater are chief instructors. Plater should by rights still be asleep: he only got in from instructing on a track day in Spain at 2am. “I like doing as much as I possibly can,” he grins.

To one side is a bar area with tea, coffee, soft drinks and munchies. It’s very relaxed, and you get the impression that Pete, who founded the Short Track UK series, and Steve, who occasionally races in it, are only here to share their love of riding.
“The main thing we want is a fun day – and, we hope, a few new skills,” says Pete, mug of tea in hand. “It’s a relaxed day, no hard structure to it. We’ll keep coming back here and having a brew. One thing: you’ve got to listen to what we say.”

Safety briefing over, we clump out into the arena where Pete explains the rough format: a series of riding drills which start easy and end with a full, kidney-shaped TT course. We each spend an entertaining five minutes cable tying our steel shoes on. These vital objects allow your foot to skitter harmlessly over the surface without catching and twisting your leg off. They also make you hobble around like an orc.

Lesson one is body position. “It’s got to be correct. There’s no point sliding a bike without it,” Pete says. “Sit over the bike, half a cheek off the seat, elbow up to control the slide.” He grabs a CCM and, with nonchalant ease, slithers it round a two-cone oval in first gear. The inside bar is less than 18 inches off the floor.

His foot is like a forward-pointing suspension strut, partly to balance the slide and partly because there’s nowhere else to put it – the footrest is already buried in the dirt. Meanwhile his throttle elbow is up at eye level. The slide itself is so graceful it’s like ballet. We look at each other in mild panic.

Shuffy
26-07-2013, 10:47 PM
Typically, I’m first. “OK, steady away to begin with. If you take a tumble you take a tumble. It shouldn’t hurt.” The bike feels nice, and I’ve already inspected the surface, which consists of hoof-friendly waxed sand and fibre. I decide it can’t hurt me at 10mph, so I go for a big lean – and discover there is absolutely masses of grip.

The front sticks hard, and when I crack open the throttle mid-corner the back breaks away obligingly. I can’t believe it. After ten or so laps I’m called back in, shaking with excitement and exertion. “That was awesome! Your footrest was down,” shouts my mate Jon. And then the next rider goes out – and does exactly the same. A few of us take longer to figure it out than others, but only by getting the timing wrong.

The smoothest rider, even at this early stage, is 14 year-old Leah, in her second season of beach racing. We blokes are sawing away at the throttle, on/off, on/off. She’s gradually creeping up to the breakaway point in a much more controlled fashion. When she comes back in I discover why. “The bike’s so heavy!” she says.

Of course – a 230cc four-stroke feels like a moped to an adult, but when you’re small it must weigh a ton. After an hour everyone’s had a few of goes. We stop for a cuppa, and to let the exhaust fumes waft away. Steve Plater munches a biscuit and enthuses about sliding.

“I started speedway when I was 15. I couldn’t afford to do it professionally, but in my head it was what I was really good at. My interest in Short Track is massive. It teaches you bike control, throttle control, body position. And you get a good idea of how the machine works when it’s sideways.”

Is it true that on a track day you and Neil Hodgson can tell if a rider will crash within half a lap? “We don’t even need that long.” How can you tell? “Lots of things. The way they make the bike respond.”

For lesson two we’re up to four cones to make a kidney-shaped circuit which we ride one-handed. The idea is to get us rocking from the hips, and putting our feet up on the pegs. “The Americans do this exercise all the time,” Pete says.

His assistant, 17 year-old Tim Neave, demonstrates. His speed and skill are dazzling. It feels weird, but you get used to it surprisingly easily. Fellow rider Simon Williams, who hasn’t ridden for three years, is easily the best.

Even the instructors are impressed. “I’m really crap at riding (he’s not) but I’m loving the experience,” he grins.

Lesson three is a bigger oval, which introduces two new problems: braking and corner entry. Short track bikes don’t have front brakes. Instead they scrub off speed with lean angle and back brake.

“I really want to see you getting aggressive on it now,” Pete says. “None of this big round circle you’ve been doing. You’re going to have to get the bike stopped and turned. You’ve got to work the brake and understand what that’s about.” Our brains are now grappling with three interconnected three-dimensional problems per corner.

At first it’s all a bit overwhelming: every turn feels like a surprise, even though you know it’s coming. When I stop, I am really gasping for breath. I ask Tim, who’s won the 2010 UK Junior Short Track championship, whether he locks the wheel. “Oh no. Just slow the wheel down, or it can catch you out,” he says.

“I just apply it gently for a second or two then just feed it in gently. Sometimes when I’m on the power I use the back brake to take the edge off it.” I try again, concentrating on brake feel.

After a leisurely lunch of fruit, crisps, biscuits and several litres of water we get our first go at a full-size oval. A tractor has smoothed out the morning’s mess and for now at least the surface is pristine. Tim offers a few encouraging words. “Don’t be too aggressive. You’ll feel when it’s right.

Shuffy
26-07-2013, 10:48 PM
Just use all the skills you’ve been working on: brake, body position, getting on the gas.” Tim, I’ve been riding for 34 years and you’re telling me how to ride a bike. “I know. It doesn’t feel right.” Don’t worry. I’m listening to everything you say.

Steve Plater is leading each of us round. I can’t believe I’m hurtling into a bend as fast as I dare with a guy who’s lapped the TT at 130mph. He only glances behind a few times, but he’s figured me out. “You’re concentrating so hard on what’s happening with the bike you’re not looking where you’re going,” he says. “Where you are is history, whether you’re doing it well or not. What’s important is where you’re going.”

He’s right. I’m riding too far out of my comfort zone. So are the rest of us, apparently, because the next session is a track walk and discussion of lines. Unlike a road circuit, a dirt oval line changes according to the state of the track. If it’s chewed up, find another line that’ll upset the bike less.

“Keep your vision well in front of yourself. It’s so important,” says Steve. “You’ve got to read the circuit. It’s your responsibility to understand what’s happening NOW.” We have another go, this time trying different lines behind instructors.

I understand what he’s saying just before my concentration dissolves in a haze of exhaustion. The last session is the TT course: a full oval with a fifth right-hand corner, and a gearchange down to first. It might not sound much, but it sure gets your attention when you try it.

I pull in early, try one more session, and call it a day. I simply cannot ride any more. Nor, it seems, can anyone else. But it’s been a fantastic experience.

Why bother learning to slide? I can only think of five reasons. Because it’s glorious. Because winter sucks. Because you get an adrenalin shot that could knock over a rhinoceros. Because whatever your skill level, it will get catapulted forwards about ten years. And because all that judgement of entry speed, turning points and looking ahead pays off in spades as soon as you get back on a normal bike.
It certainly beats going rusty in front of the telly.

SO REMEMBER FRIDAY 2 AUGUST IS OUR FINAL CUTOFF DAY FOR AN EXCLUSIVE UKMOC FLAT TRACK DAY.

I thank you...

Shuffy

As we're now passed our Friday deadline, I've instructed Jackie at the school to open it up to the general public.

SO, if you still want to have a go, you'll have to get in quick and book your place yourself as I understand there's quite a bit of interest in that date from outside parties.

For those of you on the list who put their names down and still haven't made payment, you'll need to contract the school fairly quickly now if you still want to do the day, as your place is only guaranteed if you've paid you deposit or the full fee.

It's a shame we couldn't get the required number to make it a UKMOC exclusive day, but many thanks to everyone who has signed up, but it will still be a great, fun event.

Re the Flat-track day and despite the constant reminders etc, I missed the boat when it came to pay - my bad. I'm crap at organisation so apologies for saying I'd go and then not getting my crap together to pay the deposit. I don't like to let people down so apologies for the guys / girls who put this together and next time, I'll be a bit quicker on the pay button.

I do have a list of excuses that I could trot out but I won't bother. It's just I'm rubbish and will try harder next time.

I'm sure it'll be a cracking day and I'll be "well jell" when I see what a good time was had by all.

Great day with smashin' folks.
Was a bit tired and found myself having a wee lie down a lot, got to chat to Niall Mackenzie, got excellent training from his boy Taylor, learned something new and I hurt today.
Top day out.

A massive thanks to everybody who came to the flat track day yesterday and help make it so much fun. We all had a blast and learnt something new. Hell, even I got slightly better!

I can't think of many bike activity days where you get tuition by some of the best riders in the country, meet a GP and race legend (Mr Niall Mackenzie), get taught by his son Taylor (what a nice guy and an awesome talent), thrash someone else's bike AND stay dry all day (boy did it rain) for less than the price of a normal track day. Watching Pete Boast and the instructors ride ride around the course at the end on a full blown flat track race bike was pretty amazing stuff too, oh to have even a fraction of their ability! So, many thanks to Pete and Jackie for putting on another brilliant day.

Sadly I didn't take any pictures (I didn't have the energy!), but I know a few people did, so hopefully they can post up a bit later.

If all this sounds like fun, why not give it a go, I have a funny feeling you just might enjoy it.

Now, where did I leave my left leg?

P.S I forgot to say many thanks to Scrapps for driving us up and the great company along with BigOz.

This was great fun. Thanks Shuffy for organising and everyone for making it such a laugh.

I thought I had gotten away ache-free, but I'm a little sore this evening, more so from falling off than from the sticky outy leg business.

If you ain't crashin....

...Now, where did I leave my left leg?

Welcome to my world

I suggest looking in the cupboard under the stairs.. that's where mine normally hides itself

After feeling like I couldn't walk yesterday, I've woken up to feel normal again and the aches have gone. Thank goodness for that. Well worth the one days aching for sure!

It was great fun watching the different groups in action - all had UKMOC members - got a few video clips on my phone but no idea how to upload them yet.... Have to point out that Bex was singled out at for praise at the close of activities.
