ECSTATIC!!!

I have just rolled it out of the van and literally stood and gawped at it for a solid hour. Stunning bike, wanted one for years, and finally got one.

It's a 2006 in Pearl white with red frame and stripe. 2 owners, 15k. Not pristine by any means, a similar condition to my S4 and that's a 2001 with 21k on it. But so silly cheap it had to be bought/rescued.

Will leave pics until it's had a proper extensive clean, as it doesn't really look like it's been pampered for a while.

Some TLC heading it's way over this month but i may transfer my insurance in the morning and go out for a blast :-)

Comparison with the S4.

My S4 has a Traxxion Dynamics front fork kit and the DU046 Öhlins rear shock so handling wise already had some good kit on it. I haven't really pushed the RS yes as not checked the suspension setting yet and no ridden for 5 months either. It did feel quite stiff, even from how I remember how much stiffer the new suspension made the S4, but rode the bumps impeccably. you can certainly feel the quality in the suspension. Will be able to comment more when I get a new rear tyre as at the moment it's squared off and feels weird when you turn in.

Brakes are phenomenal. Hardly any lever effort required. Slight judder so the bobbins need freeing off but the stopping power is unreal. Not keen in the levers, they feel massive and clumsy, they'll be getting changed. Clutch feels heavy too. (Now fitted an updated slave cylinder but not ridden it again).

Clearly it feels a lot like the S4, but I had S4R bars in that so no surprise there. Seat feels a touch higher (gel seat now on). Not keen in the pegs as you can feel the exhaust on the right heel all the time. Rear sets and exhaust will be getting changed. The only discomfort I felt was in my back due to spinal compression under acceleration...which brings me onto the engine.

As I hadn't ridden for a while, certainly not on the road, and had read reports about the RS being a bit of a wheelie machine it took me a while to build up to a full throttle attempt. Whilst pootling about I was stunned to find it a bit of a pussy cat around town, it's way more refined and tactile than my rip snorting, raw, snapping S4. I was expecting it to be quieter (being standard, but the S4 having the termis, air box mods and race ECU) but they are completely different. The RS feel like less of a twin, it's so smooth and the power comes in and builds like a surge like on a big four, whereas the S4 growls and barks and seems to pull at a similar, linear rate to the redline. No bad thing, because the power is pretty damn spectacular! Certainly the fastest bike I've ever ridden, puts my old 996 ST4S to shame. I'm also surprised at the lack of engine braking compared to the S4. Any reason for this?

So overall, slight intrepidation, but then the familiarity of it all fell into place and it I was giving it beans in no time. Full bore acceleration gets you into naughty speeds very very quickly and you do need to respect throttle input. The smoothness and crispness of the throttle response is sublime. It makes the S4 feel very coarse. I'd describe the difference as the S4 feeling like an old beetle with a big set of Webers on it, and the Testastretta feeling like someone pulled that old beetle motor out and dropped an Impeza WRX motor in there.

In a way I'd like a bit more of the rorty character of the S4, I miss it, so going to mod the airbox. I've even bought a pair of 999S 54mm throttle bodies and shower injectors to try and make fit. The udder and exhaust will be changed too. Hopefully with a decent remap I'll get the full 150bhp and some growl back.

The full system/ de-cat/ race ecu and filter does make a nice difference. I tend to run mine with the baffles in, more to save any hassle/risking a pull. The other half was following me last year in the car. She says it pops a flame on the upchange. :D

I thought there was a space issue with fitting the larger throttle bodies? Where there's a will, there's a way!

Hey Phatty, glad you are enjoying the bike - your comments are really similar to mine when I made the switch. :)

I'd make the 50mm system on top of your list of priorities. It eliminates the issue with having to ride with your right boot at an odd angle and transforms the lower power band - I think probably due to the more aggressive engine map more than anything. I know when you mean about the IL4 feeling of the engine on the standard system but I think this is because it is quite heavily restricted by the std. pipework - the upgrade transformed the bike for me.

In regards to the engine breaking, the 999 motor is a much freer revving engine then the 916, the bore is larger (100mm as opposed to 94mm) but the stoke is shorter (63.5mm as opposed to 66mm), this combined with lighter internals means that shutting off the throttle is no longer line deploying a parachute behind the bike is it was with the S4. :)

Glad you're loving it. You've already noticed the spinal compression, wait till you take the airbox lid off and feel the intake under acceleration make your eardrums bleed... :)

A full system is definitely on the cards, possibly even a scratch built one as I know a guy who makes race exhausts for BSB teams :-) Can't go too loud as it'll restrict which trackdays I can go on. the S4 used to do 103db every time at Cadwell.

AFAIK the issue with clearance for the bigger throttle bodies and injectos lies with the tank. I've got 2 spare steel tanks so i was going to open one up and have it welded back together with a reduced capacity so the bodies and shower injectors would fit (purely for track, not road use). Might not work, but worth a go as the bodies were badly advertised as an airbox and thus cheap!

Re the spinal compression, I noticed it because it hurt! I have a herniated disc in my lower back. It make be the case that my body can't handle any more power.

If you have an exhaust made, just get them to include removable baffles for ease.
That way you'll stay on the right side of the trackday's and the police should you need.

That's interesting, are the 54mm TB's really that much taller than the 50mm? I take it even ditching the air-box and using filter socks they still wouldn't fit?

Might be worth noting that the S4RS with the full system and ECU tested on http://www.bikeboy.org made 124 bhp. A 999s with a 57mm exhaust system and matched ECU on the same dyno made 126.9bhp... not a massive difference.

He did however dial-in the cams on the 999s and it made 133.5bhp so perhaps that might be worth doing on the RS.

Will start a new thread when I get the 999S airbox and TB setup and see if it's even close to fitting.

999s/r engine and airbox going in a S4

Not sure about a s4r frame, I did have one for comparison, It looked very similar.

The front lower cross brace, diagonal cross brace between the cylinders need to be moved. Expansion tank will no longer fit.

You can mount the fuse/ecu/relay onto the 999 air box. The ecu needs mounting on the rear of the box.

The tank will need packing up at the hinge end (ooeer) and under the frame rubbers. about 5mm. To allow for fuel sender and pipe clearance.

The 999 uses an in-tank fuel reg, the s4 uses a reg on the t/b's. So you will need to plumb in an ext reg.

You will need to fit replacement breather pipe.

The 999 uses a single wiring plug for the tps and inj. You may need to modify your loom. I am using the 999 loom.

You will have to decide what you want with regards to air-tubes, as the outlets on the box don't line up exactly with the gap in the frame.

The s4 is a single cable throttle, you will have to convert the 999 to this, or fit twin cables.

It can be done but I would fit it once and be done with it. If a 999 can pass a trackday with it, it will pass in a s4r.

If I were you, I would be looking to spend my efforts elsewhere to improve power.

If you need anymore info, just ask.

Sounds like MAJOR fannying about! Surely be eaiser to bore out the S4Rs throttle bodies and fit the injector cradle and injector setup off the 999bodies.

From taking a quick look the 999 bodies are inside the air box, wheres the bottom of the airbox on the monster stops at the junction between the body and the velocity stack (leaving room underneath for the expansion tank.

Wiring looms are easy to pin out and splice or make into new connectors.

Why the need to remove the frame bracking? Does it just hit the 999 airbox and the bracing member between the bodies?

The diagonal brace won't allow the 999 airbox to sit on the inlet rubbers. By moving (not removing) the brace slightly forward, the box can seat properly. You could look into modifying the 999 airbox to fit the cross-brace.

I doubt you will have the height inside the s4rs airbox to fit the shower injection. Also the feasibility of fitting the 999 stacks/trumpets to the s4rs bodies. I could be wrong though. All these mods are on a suck it and see basis. It's all do-able.

It's what is known as , Cause and Effect.

Keep us informed of your progress.

Phatty

The air box issue is that the monster on sits on top of the throttle bodies, giving space underneath for the expansion tank, only the velocity stacks are inside the airbox. Whereas on the 999 the bottom ofthe airbox is on the bottom of the throttle body, and the entite unit and injection system is inside the airbox, with filters in the intake pipes.

I see no reason why a monster airbox base couldn't be fitted to the 999 TB's, but seeing as the shower injectors then sit so high I have no idea what could be done about air filters which would look neat and not result in 2 filters poking through the frame.

Phatty
19-04-2013, 09:17 PM
Also the S4RS has a stepper motor to control idle air so the 999 TB's would need drilling to install this. I also note the 999 has twin throttle cables. Easy enough to fit the 999 throttle grip I guess or fit a closing spring.

Phatty, Are you reading all that is contained in my posts?

Do the 999 t/b's have the provision to fit the monster airbox base to it?

The air filter problem can be solved by fitting filter foam, flush on the inside of the box.

Would you need an idle control valve with 999 t/b's?
