Hi I have got a similar project, have been collecting parts to get started, hope to get going on it in the next couple of weeks. Be interested to watch your progress, looks like we have the same exhaust system, I like the carbon heat shield fitted. I am getting rid of the rear sets and fitting the stock items back. I am also going to fit the tea tray on the back again don't fancy getting a wet back, just got to extend the rear frame were it has been cut short!

You wouldn't need so much Sellotape if they made proper twisted wire connections instead of using chocky blocks.....

Clankie the colour combo is very cool. Are you going for a reverse shift pattern? actuator should be at 5.25 position.

clankie
20-04-2013, 09:07 PM
Well I think it should look good when its done . It's is my spin on the dark concept . I have reset the shifter back to standard pattern since taking the photo . I keep setting my road bikes up to reverse pattern by mistake I have spent to long playing with race bikes .

Is that one of the hard anodised Renthal sprockets on the back wheel ?
I was shown one of these that was due to go on a MX bike and was amazed at the weight reduction over the steel one......a mod well woprth doing in my opinion.
Also, that's a different front disc to the one in your first pic ....the rotor has holes rather than spokes.
I expect there are other reasons for fitting it, but it does also match the rear sprocket rather nicely, as they both have holes.

Amazing speed on this job....I'm impressed....and it somewhat puts my snails pace restoration work to shame.
I have a Norton Commando thats been a project since 1978 !!!!!

Rearsets look good.
I'm assuming that they will accept pillion brackets too, possibly with the hi-level cans too, which is not a commonly available situation.
Can you post pics of both sides once the bike is finished.
I find that rearsets with std bars (well, Renthal ultra lows actually, but they're almost std pattern) gives a pretty good all round, slightly sporty riding position which suits my 6ft plus frame.
Mine are Rizomas, but I had to tweek them to suit the hi-level cans.

25-04-2013, 06:46 PM
Hi all, well Hellcat dont be putting ideas in my head about buying that monster i dont have enough room i already have six bikes .well back to my project ,well Utopia yes it is a renthal aluminum sprocket they are really good and are light as a feather .the rearsets will take pillon hangers i just havent bought them yet Desmo Performance Parts dont worry i will post pics of the finshed bike from a few angles so you get a good veiw of it . the brake disc is a later monster one and i will be running two of them .
so todays job has ben making some 316 stainless steel chain markers as the old ones were really rusted .

you're going to want to point the headlight down a bit for the MOT ;-)

Great project and impressive end result

Not really digging the chopped front mudguard - crap from front wheel will get up under the tank

I reckon you'll end up fashioning some sort of heel guards to keep your boots off the link pipes. I'm with GT on the front guard but of it's the look
you're after then go for it. I'd consider red tie wraps to keep the wiring on the frame too

That's looking really nice.

Its maybe a small point, but I really like the blackened headlamp mount and yokes, which simplify the look of the forks.

On the other hand, I agree with the others about the front mudguard. Though a carbon extenda might sort it ..?

I notice that you've junked the plastic pods.
When I did this I found that it left the reg/rec multiconnectors very exposed to rain (mine were wet after 2 miles in drizzle).
I moved mine up by the coils where they stay dry, but in leiu of that I'd suggest greasing them well with a suitable electrical grease (or Vaseline maybe).

On the subject of indicators ....
A minimal look is nice, but I find that many of the aftermarket indicators that I see are too small, too short and too feeble to really work properly ...which could be a safety issue.
But for me, the clincher is the curvy tea tray, which I like the look of ...because the std indicators fit properly to it, creating a continuous curvy structure, whereas many aftermarket ones create a massive mismatch at the joint.
So I'd stick with std ones.

It looks like it sits at a decent height with the rear hoop extenders and the forks dropped in the yokes.
This is something I've been thinking about doing to my 750 ....For one thing I'm quite tall, and I also often wonder whether the extra height would give me a bit more body leverage over the bike, making it easier to muscle about.
On the other hand, with rearsets that keep my feet away from the ground, I now kinda enjoy how ridiculously close to the ground my body gets on my favourite bends.
So ....I'd be interested to hear how you find the handling.

Oh, and I can't see a sidestand cutout switch fitted.
In my recent experience, that can catch you out.

Nice job.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Well when I ordered the mudguard I thought it was a full mudguard not a chopped down one so it may be getting changed when funds allow, and I'm with you Slob on the black cable ties, I haven't found any red ones yet that dont look pink in colour. As for heel guards I have laid up some carbon sheet to cut out for heel guards but I might try the bike out first before I fit them as I ride with my feet on the ends of the pegs . On the indicator front I haven't made my mind up, I have seen some Rizoma ones which are nice but they aren't cheap so if anybody on here is using them I would be grateful on your veiws on them before I buy a set and find they are rubbish . As Utopia mentioned the bike sits at a decent height, I am 5:10 and weigh in at a chunky 90kgs when I got the bike the suspension had been set up really badly that when you started to push the bike into corners it started to tuck the front and if you touched the front brake while leaned over it would head straight for the nearset hedge !! so I reset everything and prior to the rebuild it handle really well so it should be interesting to see if anything has changed a good run round Snowdonia should do. On the cable routing and plugs I will be soldering the connections for the voltage reg as the plugs are rubbish and will only be a source of trouble. Really like the feedback, any more greatly received.

I like the front mudguard :)

Agree about the cable ties. They bug me even when the colour matches. There must be a better solution to hold and hide the cables.

When I did my s4 I marked where all the rubber straps went. Then on the inside I drilled and pop riveted some aluminium tabs to which the wiring attached thus not seeing the bands when it was powdercoated red.

You drilled holes in the frame? :eyepopping:

yes very small holes in very few places and then filled with a rivet. There are holes in frames for various reasons you may have seen them on most bikes. Would you be scared to do such a thing then.

not sure on the hole idea as there would be a few holes in the tubes . i might looking into getting the black rubber ones copied in red silcone rubber .we use a frim in work that makes one off and short runs of parts made in rubber .

Yes, but then I'm scared of doing anything too mechanical to bikes. Cars I'm happy to take to pieces, rebuild, drill holes etc but bikes scare me in general, riding them and working on the important bits!

Can't understand why, less to go wrong on a bike.

Mechanically simpler yes. But if I get it wrong it's just me, a helmet and London traffic.

Liking the bike, I like the look of the front guard but then you will have that issue with rod grim over engine, have a look at rapstraps they do a red and they softer rubber, I found with cable ties can wear the paint after a while

New Ducati all have holes in the frames for the wiring tabs, nothing too scary about them.
Also, I actually like the mudguard, I'm on a similar route myself, just not as straight.

I was looking at the front mudguard, and thinking that there was possibly some scope for cutting back the front of a std item but not as far, or as square, as yours is. I'd leave the back for cleanliness reasons though.
And then I noticed that your speedo cable looks in danger of flapping about and rubbing the tyre.
And then I realised that you've threaded it through the other side of the bottom yoke to how it was before, and you haven't fitted the little wire hoop thingy that holds it steady.
Not being picky, just helpful, hopefully.

Call me paranoid, but I wouldn't drill holes in my frame, no matter how small, and particularly if it was only for cosmetic reasons.
You might find that you can remove some of the ties and secure the cables in some other way, either to internal frame members or even just to each other in some cases, as that can sometimes stiffen them enough to maintain their position.
But I doubt if you'll manage to dispense with them all in this way.
Though, personally I don't mind the look of the black rubber ties anyway, particularly on a bike with a strong sense of black in the colour scheme.

Thanks for the feed back everyone .utopia you arent being picky your words have been very helpful .when i took the pic of the bike i had'nt noticed i had routed the speedo cable on the wrong side
i havent fitted the the cable guide to the mudguard yet as i havent made a new one out of stainless yet . well the mudguard is staying for the time being it is growing on me just means more cleaning to keep the engine free from road crud !!!
