View Full Version : Is Albie having a midlife crisis ?

Ok lets put paid to the gossip. The answer simply is NO. Actually I probably had one 11 years ago when I bought the Monster when my marriage was on the rocks. Been there done that. Very happy in my life actually. No I have some upset in personal life with a health problem that prevents me enjoying riding when I want and that intern causes anxiety. I am getting by and by that I mean I am making my self happy doing what I enjoy and that is bringing bikes to life rather than then being scrapped. I invest money and enjoy the work and the comments how nice they are and its self satisfaction whether a powerful bike or a small cc moped.
So seeing as people have asked behind the scenes I am getting a bike of similar ilk to what I first had. I had intended to popsi purple it but its too nice to do it on.This is for Caroline and the Popsi may come along after.
Let me tell you about it. Never wanted the Suzuki and wanted a Fsie so ones comes along from Germany and 1 owner and 39 years old and completely original other than an oversized rear mudguard. The price just £600 and just 14,000 miles. It is actually not an FS1E but a Yamaha SS50 as Honda were going to sue Yamaha over the Title in UK so they changed the name to FS1E.
It just needs a stripdown and fresh paint and powdercoat and plating parts. I have also a NOS buddy seat and original rear mudguard and a standard seat coming with it in 2 weeks time. It will be re registered in UK with age related plates so an M or N plate.Value when done possibly up to £3000 so its an investment unlike all the money we pile into Monsters just to lose it resale. I have a monster I like and have no liking to waste money and so I invest in classic bikes and give myself something to do and keep out of trouble as Caroline is a very busy teacher.
So those that may mock can do by all means but I have the grin on my face when people stop and ask questions about the bikes. Its just something I have a passion for and makes my life just that bit happier.
Whats next... possibly an RD400 and thats it unless that MotoGuzzi Le mans mk1 ever turns up for the right price.
As it is

As she will look including the seat

So no I am fine and not in a crisis. Ta...

Albs not the only one in UKMOC to have small CC's bikes....;);)

Firstly Albs, the restoration projects you've done have been great and I'm sure this WILL look even better than the 'after' picture you've put up.

Secondly, don't ever worry about having a mid-life crisis. It's fun.

Albie, I really enjoy reading your bike building blogs, think a mid life crises is more when you buy a gleaming harley and leather trousers or sell the family saloon and buy a sports car, nothing to do with restoring bikes mate. If you get an RD400 I will be chomping at the bit to see how that project goes, I would love one.

Crisis ? .....What crisis ?

Unless you mean being afflicted with a love of the FS1E, in which case that's been a crisis since you were 16.
The RD400 is an excellent shout though, as is the le mans but perhaps a bit less probable.
I've fancied doing a 500 suzuki 2-stroke rebuild for a while now (cheaper than a kawa triple), though it would be miles from a std rebuild. A Seeley frame would be nice.
But then there's also the 70's trials iron, the commando bar-hopper, dommie engined street-tracker ....etc etc.

I probably would have had a few midlife crises by now ....but I haven't grown up enough for that yet.

Having owned a MkV Le Mans, and it being of all the bikes iv'e owned, one of two I wish I had never sold (the other being a 888...don't! I know!!) if you ever purchase a Le Mans, the Guzzi bug will bite! (Albie, you have commented on how much you like my Griso!!)
As for the FISE... I was a Honda SS50 guy, with disc brake and 5 speed 'box! So your half way to the right bike, at least with the model type!
Remember, Albie, its not a crisis, more a big boys toys vibe! :spin::yoparty:

You just do what you want to do .
I've always got a lot of pleasure out of little bikes 80's bikes.
I would love a purple FSIE :)

I'm having my midlife crisis ...
But have plans.

My little YDS7 was a pretty bike.
Gold and cream not the usual black and bronze .

We would only raise one eyebrow if you rocked up on a baby pink Honda Melody with a shopping basket with LED strips under and spokey Dokeys.

Do what you want , when you can, that makes You happy :) ( and Caroline :) )

FS1E and SS50 are spawn of the devil abominations ,,,,,,,I rode a Suzuki B120 with 50cc badges on and no one not even the fuzz ever noticed that I was underage 14 and even when i was 16 and rode it to school no one realised that it was illegal ha ,, passed my test on it and day I was 17 bought a 250 starfire.... ah those were the days

I'm sure the official age limit for a mid life crisis is 40, and I passed that mark some time ago

Do I care?

No

Just an update in case your not reading the blog. Its all coming together finally except the engine has to go away for a check up with the Fs1e doctor who is exceptionally recommended. All the parts are nearly bought and the powdercoats done and plating's being done right now. Come end of October the rebuild happens over Christmas.
What has changed for the good is this

Your not actually wrong there. Skill comes with wanting and desire to try and succeed. Patience comes after stress and the ability to control ones anger after it all goes wrong. I still make errors but not as many as the XT500. That's taught me a lot but this far simpler but just as expensive in some cases. Its the first time I had so much chroming done. He is actually reasonable and doing the rear mudguard now. The exhaust has a dent and a big gouge so too far gone to do. Shame but was restricted and I have an unrestricted carb now so good for 45-50 lol but will use a pattern exhaust now.

Its nearly there. Just waiting for my seat base that I had to modify with moving the 2 brackets and 2 bolts forwards as was squishing up the foam on the tank too much and the engine is in for Fizzy surgery with the expert in Fizzyland giving it a thorough overhaul as we don't know its history in its 39 years on earth.

Next time it will look like the vision I had and running and that should be in around 2 weeks time. I reckon I am mad for doing it but at the end of the day it has a massive value and interest to my past.

Update if you don't follow my Blog. Seem to be getting a lot of views lately. Its almost coming to an end and within a week should be rideable as the Engine man Raccoon has just informed me its done. I did clean it up generally and I painted the cases myself but I took it to the Fizzy expert for a complete service involving
Stripdown completely
Vapour blast crankcases
New bearings
New seals
New studs and nuts from Yamaha
Rebore and new piston , rings etc
New gaskets etc
New clutch
Carb overhauled
Reed valve opened out from restricted size
Ported where necessary
Replated output shafts ( gear shift and kick start and primary sprocket)
Replated kickstart , flywheel, neutral switch.
New correct engine case/cover screws
New points and condenser

Total cost £350 which aint bad considering a belt change costs that on a Ducati.

So look forward to 6.5 hp + and was 4.2 before lol.

Luckily or should is say unluckily as pedal is more valuable technically and if it had have been I would have UK'd it and popsi purpled it. This was a 30 mph bike from germany. Threw that restricted carb away. Opened out the restricted bore on the reed valve opening too an an unrestricted pattern uk exhaust. Full power to 6.4 lol.

Its done complete as new never been as shiney ever no doubt. Other than tomorrow I will hopefully this awesome powerhouse it has has every nut and bolt where possible replated or repurchased and no expense spared on genuine parts. It does run but I have to refill the gearbox and then fuel up the tank and hoping the fuel tap doesn't leak. I also have a normal fizzy seat to restore as its a solo seat tbh and getting a fair few comments about people don't like it. It will look better with a yellow covering I feel.

One day maybe another Italian Bike to restore. Maybe an early Monster or I have been thinking about the 916 I never had or a Moto Guzzi le mans MKI or II. Don't like the later ones.

And thank you for your appraisal it means a lot and sorry if some may be offended by the Japs, I personally like most motorcycles but sometimes it takes just a spark of something to interest me in something I may have missed or forgotten. But I assure you my love for Ducati has not ever gone. Its the longest ever brand I have ever owned continuously.

Of special interest to me because I started my 2-wheel life on a yellow Fizzie and looking at various photos of yours reminds me of all the ways in which mine was an old nail.

By the way - don't worry about gearbox oil... I can tell you from experience that they run pretty well with none... :D

Oh well its the end of the restoration pretty much. Today she has her new fitted standard length seat and ran for the first time in her frame. Runs lovely and picks up well. Just some minor tweaking before getting an MOT and a registration plate for the 75 period.

Thank you for following me and enjoying my ride backwards to the start when I was 16. Sometimes you have to follow your heart to find out what it was like and the journey was kind of fun with this. And I made Caroline happy too. She loves the little ped.

Not much of a video this one but proof she runs well.

Ah yes the 10mm I was doing the M6 x 12mm horn bolts up with and the 8mm ( which you missed was doing up the grease nipple on the front brake plate and the 17mm was busy on sunday doing up the petrol tap which I had to swap over. Does that help lol.

Yes the very last one. I am sorry but this is special. Its my 1st bike ( but not this one sadly) . Carolines having the other one maybe but not selling it anyhow.
The monsters having some changes this year too and next year as I get better and able to ride freely when I want to. I need to shift a couple to give me some room soon. Who wants a Suzuki Moped then all nice and tidy.

Am I correct in remembering the FS1E had an odd gearchange pattern, all up including first? Or am I having a senior moment?

Not sure I would want my first one - James Captain (I was 12) and loads of field Bantams.

This was my first motorised transport at 16.

The FS1E was so much cooler but I couldn't afford one. I remember one lad in the village had a Garelli which seemed very fast at the time. Very loud as well.

4k! Wow - that's amazing. That purple looks fantastic.

SPG 220 R (yellow FS1E-DX) was my first bike. Bought it for 65 quid from the local breakers yard. Ran for just over a year, got through 3 pistons and three rebores taking it up to 58cc, sold it for 200 quid.

Wonder where it is now?

After not doing much on the Moped and weekender and doing stuff on My best bike ( Ducati Monster ) I managed to spend a couple of hours on my Popsi and almost there and today she got a look outside the garage for the very first time. I am missing / awaiting 4 parts to finish her. Engine covers x 2 , seat base and the other side panel. All else is there to complete the project.

Hoping your liking her.

Wow! I can't believe how clean and shiny it all looks (or how dainty and bicycle like - I know, I didn't mis-spend my youth riding mopeds).

Once again, I take my hat off to you and all your patient shed tinkering. I hope the remaining 4 parts turn up soon, so you can finish the Popsi, as we're all eagerly awaiting the next incarnation of your Monster 1100!

She looks fantastic Albie, a few of my mates had the same when we had mopeds, I was at college and could not afford a FSIE, I had a crap Cassal but it was faster than some of my mates mopeds !

This one's for you Albie.

Spotted at "Wheels Next the Sea" today, a rather large turnout of bikes of all sizes and types.

http://i59.tinypic.com/2vlnyms.jpg

Fizzies are definatly not my thing, but you couldn't help but notice them, as they arrived in a swarm of about 8 of them together with many other mopeds and small motorbikes. Including Honda SS50's and a couple of Fantic engined bikes (forgotten the name already.!)

Whatever butters your Parsnip.

Well no need to tell you its now done and almost ready to mot and finally having a Popsi to ride, keep and show. its taken 13 months but 8 of them waiting for missing panels to finish. No more mopeds and the Suzuki is sold and the yellow german ss50 fizzy will be for sale to get another Monster of old either to restore or buy an original beauty.
Anyhow hope you like the 40 year old ped for what it is and what it was. Pure FUN even now.

PS remove if distasteful.

As a contrast I did a restoration of a Laverda 1200 a few years back, which is probably the physically largest bike by comparison. I mean you have to be at least 6 ft to even ride one

No that was duly noted when I took the pictures and thought them keys for the steering lock need protection. Its an original half moon key in the ignition too a NOS someone had lying around the same number.
I thank you for your nice comments and yes good fun not for long distance and I would swap for a Laverda for a week or two. Needs running before thrashing Martin and I wasn't sure if I had tightened it all down tbh and just doing a shake down. Anything could fall off don't be too sure lol. I nearly missed my turn and thought ooh where's the brakes .

Its a painting to be adored and andorned.
