I was looking for some Christmas gifts...for myself and I stumbled upon this,
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Standard-Catalog-Ducati-Motorcycles-1947-2005/dp/0873497147/ref=pd_sim_b_3, a tad pricey I thought, possibly by about £2500, or am I missing the point?

Its not even the hardback!

overpricing is often used as a stop-gap measure to prevent people purchasing for whatever reason (out of stock/too early) but first time i've seen Amazon adopt such a method.

There's an automated pricing system used on amazon for some items. It makes up a number based on some criteria which can mean you sometimes get some bizarre prices that do change quite radically and rapidly. It's aimed at maintaing the sellers profit margins so sell a few odd or rare items and the price should stay high, sell a shed load of the same and it falls.
Often if you hit it from a few discrete IPs the price changes too.

Ta, didn't know that. There was a book I wanted, but the price was about the same, so that put stop to my library expansion plans. Checked it now, and it's only £9.99. :)
