managed to obtain one of the ducati challenge seat cowls from the bay, just wondering if anyone has had one so they can tell me how they fit, do they bolt to the normal cowl points and if it is possible to modify them to show your rear light.

Regarding fitting, send a PM to Flip as he has/used to have one for his bike...

Personally, I'd make up a small bracket to sit below the cowl and use a thin LED type brake/tail light - something like this perhaps:

http://www.drcproducts.com/elect/d45-29-31/index.html

And mount the number plate below it - be pretty neat I reckon...

ps. if you wanted to keep it all 'Ducati' - perhaps the tail light assembly from a 999 would also work, although that would be bigger of course...

Was hoping i could cut a hole in the back but think it would destroy it

I agree with JMo, but this one looks neater:

You probably could cut a hole with a dremel for a small taillight, or possibly use really small holes and put one of those LED arrays inside, if your neat enough they'd be almost invisible until they lit up.

I suggest you trawl some of the cafe racer sites and have a look at what some of their solutions are.

The Fleda system is mounted on a rigid tail tidy but you can get a flexible led strip quite cheaply now.

Hey, that is sweeeeeeet (as they might say here in the USA) - good find Yorkie!

You could cut a hole/s in the tail piece, but that would be sacrilege really and the problem you would have is it is essentially a hollow bowl, so mounting anything in there is going to require some fibreglassing at the very least or drilling further holes in the cowl, which is basically going to ruin the whole thing in my opinion...

Of course if you want to get really clever, you could drill a series of small holes and fit individual LED lights in there - either in a simple line, or if you wanted to be really fancy, use something like the Meccanica logo:

And put a ring of red LEDS around the centre and orange ones in the tips of the wings for indicators? - it wouldn't pass an MOT of course, but hell it would look cool for those other 364 days of the year!

Have fun whatever you do!

JMo,

I think your idea about mounting the lights directly underneath the seat unit would look best, with a custom plate mount.

ive got a custom plate mount already due to tailchop, just a bit of angle metal to be fair. but could bolt to there just need to find a suitable and cheap led strip that can plug straight in

Those DRC Flex lights are only about £20 on ebay - they do bolt on or self-adhesive versions - give it a go?!

I took a mates Blade for Mot a few months ago and was told by the guy it would fail on the LED lights having indicators combined. Not road legal apparently.

the motodynamics unit i have on now has intergrated sequential indicators and after chatting to my local MOT station agreed that id only fit it back on after having to fit an original unit so passed it.

I like the extra pad where did you get that from? Like yours lot smaller than the challenge cowl, suits it better i think. Where did you get your rear light?

Rear light is from flea bay led the cowl is from choppers 13 in the us and the pad I made up using 1/4" ply and the took it and had it covered.

Got your PM ref fitting this mate. There should be two carbon fibre brackets (fairly sturdy) that are bonded to the cowl. These attach to the subframe using the standard rear cowl securing bolts. Then there are two holes at the back that fit to the undertray section.

those brackets are there but my existing cowl bolts to the seat, is this because its an earlier bike?

had it done at viking seats who did the chicken shack monster, same style just a few differences and materials etc. suede style for seating area and plain black vinyl for everywhere else. looks and feels amazing. hard to see in these pics. only cost £70 too! well worth it.
right cowl price drop to £40 or am still after a standard cowl for a project. pref carbon.
