Did the bike come with those marchesini stickers on the rims, or did you put them on?

Mine didn't, and I didn't think they were marchesini wheels anyway.

Great choice of bike (if I may say so myself)! :)

Hi Neilo

I might lose the red stickers as they are poop quality and matt.

My wheels are Enkei/Brembo (Marchesini is Brembo) so i put the stickers on (Tart) :)

I think Enkei are now at least part owned by the Brembo Group as Japan was having far worse reccession than europe.
but not 100% sure

they own AP Racing & Sabelt etc etc.
I like the stickers

Thanks for the update on Enkei/Brembo/Marchesini, I didn't know any of that. :chuckle: I just knew that Enkei made F1 wheels.
I bought some Ducati Monster 1100evo wheel rim stickers off eBay, and they're great!

Dont like the exhaust (personally) as prefer twins with two silencers.

Bike however is mint! The 1100 Evo is the best of the new bunch and looks closest to to concept imho of the true Monster (M900).

How does it compare to what you had previously? :)

Hi Rick

Great pic. Just got an EVO as well. V interested in your experience of the Remus. Just a question of time before I'll want to make more noise lol. Did you have to do any other mods to make it work ok. Have you noticed a difference in the performance/torque etc. Possibly agree about shiny finish but still looks good. Termi's are nice but sooo expensive.

Hi Mike

Sorry mate missed your post about Remus pipe.

No mods needed
smoother at low revs and much louder.

I recently fitted 02 sensor eliminators and the bike is transformed at low revs and small throttle openings.

Would love Termis but they are stupidly priced (Mugs and lottery winners only) ;)

Im after a set of S4 wheels
But dont want to lose my ABS and need to see if i can fit reluctor ring to S4 discs.

Yes they will fit your S4 but you need discs from 796/1100 as thet are 5 bolt
Not sure if front spacers may need adjusting or not though.

How do you secure the tax disc on the fork and the rear reflector on the number plate?

Cobra88
27-06-2013, 04:29 PM
Hi Simon

Tax disc is held on with waterproof clear tape cut into a circle.
Kin Hate bolt on Tax disc Holders. :(

Rear reflector is a piece of 50 x 60mm 2mm ally sprayed black and a kink bent into it.

then eBay self adhesive reflector and some foam tape onto the back of the plate.

Local Plod don't seem to see the tiny plate if it has a reflector under it. (PROB MY IMAGINATION)

I don't like the style of the new Monsters, especially the droopy, melted headlamp and I hate 2 into 1 pipes on twins, but... yours ain't too bad! Dunno why.

Still needs some viagra in the headlamp- cheaper now it's just come off license too! Is the arse always up in the air like a 90's streetfighter or does it level down when sat on like the original Monsters?

Hi Rick,

Bike looks great, very nicely done :)

Why are you going to swap out for a custom akrapovic, when you have the Remus? interested on your thoughts?

I've been looking at pipes for the 1100 evo, not that many around and like you, I've a liking to the single pipe rather than twin, but all I've found so far is the Remus Hypercone you have fitted or the GPR Powercone, which looks a bit more round/organic compared to the remus' angular look.

So, I'm really struggling to find a good single pipe and the remus does have some pretty good feedback from those who've fitted them.

I've thought about a custom one, such as the skorpion RP-1 GP, but like you said, you have to craft up a link pipe and I'm not sure about the fuelling and air filter situation on that exhaust.....

any thoughts?

Cheers.

Hi All

A few more bits done over weekend

Gold DID Chain as my original goes red every time it rains and getting fed up of de rusting it.!
Ohlins Shock arrived and fitted.
Evotech exhaust hanger arrived.
Skidmarx Belly pan on for winter.
Rizoma raised Handlebars in Black (Rizoma MA008B) for CB1000R/Z1000 (Powder coated top yoke/riser and headlamp housing in black.
Also replaced my Cambelts & Changed oil and filter and checked valve clearances which are still in spec :) (used genuine fliter and belts and correct Shell oil).
Still got spanner icon showing on dash so need to get Parkies to turn that off (If they will) belts from Moto Rapido via Ebay :)

How are you finding the ride with the Ohlins rear shock compared to standard?
How do you find riding with no mirrors?
What are the shiney red bits around your rear wheel ?

Cheers mate, great work !!!

Cobra88
09-10-2013, 12:30 PM
Hi WeZ

Had to back preload off about 5mm to get 10mm of static sag.
and one less click of damping.

Shock was supposedly Sprung for my weight but has the same 115n/mm spring I have seen on every DU737 Ohlins so not sure if dealers actually do anything they promise to do.

Anyway ride is lovely after the Sachs Shock that I was pretty happy with till recent thread on here somewhere about new owner not liking handling.

I do have Bar end mirrors (Cycle Star by B&M) Bicycle bar end mirrors
they are just tiny but work fine.

Shiney red bits are Made in China Billet Sprocket nuts and Hub nuts.
(all tested at work and found to be as good as Very expensive Billet stuff apart from Anodizing is less robust)

And I fitted a Cheapo Carbon Hugger today as the standard placcy one looked poop.
From ebay seller
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Squaredeals-UK-Ltd go down to Carbon Fibre then Ducati then type monster in search box.
Good quality hugger for less than £80 :)

Tyre was a Mallory trackday without using tyre warmers

lots of cold tear but it's not worn off on the road, just sort of blurred back into the tyre.
I don't use the traction control as I find it pretty pointless unless its very slippy.

I do like the ABS though unlike most people :)
I can stop shorter than the ABS after a couple of tries in the dry like most competent riders
But I can't do it first go every time so I let the ABS take away the Doubt :)

I'm with you on the DTC/ABS thing too - the DTC has never kicked in at any useful moment - just when the rear kicks up over bumps - and it hasn't stopped the rear stepping out once or twice on the gas. The ABS saved me once in London so has paid for itself already.

And that is a lovely looking bike, and would look even better without the.... oh, you know what? I'm not going there.

Hi Bob

I recently got a stone through my oil filter which covered the rear tyre in oil.
I almost turned the TC back on till I realised it was an oil leak ;)

That's why I fitted the belly pan as my tyres pick up a lot of stones as do the rest of the group I ride with.

I'm still not 100% sure on the belly pan but it deffo keeps out the stones :)

If I get the White panels I am after there will be no belly pan fitted when in Stormtrooper mode.

I have changed it every 1000 miles and it turns dark in about 2 weeks
All my V twins with Hydraulic clutches have always turned the fluid dirty really fast.

Ohlins Forks from 1100S (took me a year to find a set) eBay Germany :)

1198 Discs 330mm with 5 mm caliper spacers.
(S uses 15mm offset discs) evo is 10mm :Furious:
so you need 5 mm disc spacers or 848-1199 discs.

Just waiting on caliper spacers to arrive.

The handles work really well as my GF is 5,11" and hated the grips under the tail
She likes the DP ones.

They dont look too bad on either
Although pegs are still off at the moment as i did a Brands evening a few weeks ago

Anyone found any good S fork settings as the std 8 comp and 12 rebound feels harsh
Think the oil level is too high too.

Calendars obviously done now but yours is a very nice Hybrid EVO/S. I will probably keep mine now although I am still smitten by the m1200S still. In fairness I have a very nice package and maybe will treat her to some goodies and contemplate my bikes I have to where I go next. Maybe still that Norton and sell the TT500. Want an evo exhaust though from the headers to first join.

Well the EVO is great, but lacks a bit of top end power if you've been used to more like, say, on the S4/R/S, or other non-Monster alternatives.

The 1200 addresses that issue, and then some, I should think.

Cobra - your EVO is looking absolutely fantastic - quite envious of the forks and I love the white tank / red frame / black wheels combo more than I ever thought possible. And the exhaust, whilst not the sexiest I've seen, is pretty damn close to being so, and looks like it means business.

Nice work.

Ah ok, yes, fair enough I suppose, thanks Bob. For me looks trump performance though, hence I'm on a Ducati. Is there a lot in it then. I heard the 1200 has about 140bhp what does the Evo kick out?

They claim 100bhp at the crank for the EVO - it's the most powerful air-cooled motor they ever made. Reckon on about 85 at the rear wheel, probably. (I think JP had his dyno'd at 88.)

The 1200S claims 145 peak at the crank. So, 45% more! Some of that from more torque generally, the rest because it won't run out of revs at 8000rpm.

IMHO the EVO has more than enough for UK roads - enough to go stupidly fast and get into trouble... you just have to work a bit harder at it and that, for me, is where the enjoyment comes from anyway. If you go on track, however, it is frustrating because a 600cc rice burner or a 675 Triumph will leave an EVO for dead on any decent length of straight. The 1200 will not have that trouble.

Hi Dan

What you done with your anni bodywork ?

Im after a corse kit if i can find one but also like the anni as the retro font looks cool.
Rick

Hi Bob

I have done the 189 @ rear wheel zx10R stuff and many many trackdays and tired of huge power bikes
The evo is just about perfect for uk twisties and shorter
UK trackdays and i enjoy riding a slow bike fast more than trying not to highside on every exit
(I know JP:). )
My traction control has been off since it stopped me wheeliing between 2 of my favorite corners ;)
Horsepower is great but more than the 85 i guess the evo puts to the ground is pointless on the road for me anyway.
I am still at the front of my riding group on all our rides and they all have silly power sports bikes.
I even bought a 500 nexus scooter 3 years ago to try and get sane.
Still left most of my lot behind.
Torque is far more fun on the road than HP.

I am guessing Ducati's 145 hp 1200s is the usual Ducati 125 at the wheel and with 25 kg of excess baggage it will only be faster than the Evo on a motorway or D Carriageway
So would rather improve the already reasonable 1100 evo
Have already shed 10 kg and a few more with soon to fit wheels.

Hope my ramblings make sense.

Also my finished mortgage loads of expendable dosh came to an end after 25 years when i split from my X and she took me to cleaners after i bought everything!
Now had to start again at 50 with new mortgage etc but as bonus met my GF when she was out on her Z1000 which i had at same time :)

So in other words no real point in swapping an 11 for a 12 ( unless you prefer the looks) Doesn't matter what bike you take to the track there will always be a faster one there, unless you dedicate yourself to owning the fastest track bike you can.

Of course if you want a bit of extra oomph for the 1100 a cheap way is to improve aero and cooling by adding a belly pan :running: ;):D

The next weight loss is gonna be pricey :(
The 10 front disc bolts i just bought in ti are 38 grams for all 10
The original steel bolts are 125 grams for all 10
1198 330 mm discs are 250 grams each lighter than the evo discs.
All unsprung weight.
Will also invert my rear ohlins soon to save unsprung weight :)

Might just leave it for weight as it feels like a 250 now.

So in other words no real point in swapping an 11 for a 12 ( unless you prefer the looks) Doesn't matter what bike you take to the track there will always be a faster one there, unless you dedicate yourself to owning the fastest track bike you can.

It's just that I wince every time the thing hits the rev limiter... a quickshifter would help loads.

Of course if you want a bit of extra oomph for the 1100 a cheap way is to improve aero and cooling by adding a belly pan :running: ;):D

Watch it, you.

I can say that fitting tyres to forged rims by hand is so easy :)

Wheels are on but still waiting for Caliper spacers to suit 330mm discs.

I can say that fitting tyres to forged rims by hand is so easy :)

I found the same thing exactly, somewhat to my surprise.
Cable ties were the magic ingredient, in my case.

The really trick thing, as I also discovered, is to first find the balance point of the bare wheel and then to position the tyre so that its heavy spot coincides with the light spot on the wheel, thus reducing the amount of balance weight required.
This is quite easy if you use the cable ties to keep the tyre loose on the rim.
Slightly surprisingly, the position of the valve does not seem to have any significant effect at all, at least it didn't on my wheel.

Cobra88
04-12-2013, 03:17 PM
I managed to get both tyres on without using any levers (and it's not warm outside)
plenty of tyre lube and brute force but didn't want to damage rims :)

They have a really deep well compared to cast rims and a really good finish so they just kept sliding as I pushed as the soap stays in the machining marks and keeps it lubed.

have saved approx. 1.7 kg on front wheel and discs.
and 1.25 kg on rear wheel which is more than I expected as the evo rims are lighter than the
796/1100/S Enkei/Marchesinis to start with.

1100 evo Enkei/marchesini 10 spoke rims inc bearings and spacers
Front 4.423 kg
Rear 5.036 kg

OZ Piega forged Rims inc bearings & spacers
Front 3.361 kg
Rear 3.775 kg

Evo Disc 320 mm is 1.306 kg each
1098S 330 mm disc is 1.058 kg each

and another 100 grams saving with ti disc bolts.

The Ohlins forks where 1.4 kg lighter than the Marzocchi forks on the Evo too :)

So should feel nice when I finally get my caliper spacers I payed next day delivery 4 days ago for :(

Been a long time since I was down Ipswich way. Is that Foxs Marina on the other side there?
I spent many an hour down there in the freezin' bleedin Winter with the rigging moaning in the wind, working on brand new Oyster yachts.
Once I was trying to get sealer to go off on a 14 ton lead keel at about nine below zero or somthing...So the boss sent me a fan heater out of the office to warm it up..??..:fou:

I worked at Bob Spalding for a few weeks but the toerag who trades under that name
Messed up paying me (ie. he didnt)
So that was my brief foray into civvie marina work.
Freezing cold in winter and sunstroke in summer doing white gelcoat repairs (snowblind!)

Mirrors are pushbike jobbies modified to fit
Busch & Muller "cyclestar"
I like them as they are composite and ball & socket so if you clip a wing mirror while filtering they just ping off and dont pull on the bars.

Mustard - I have just bought the "performance seat" lets just say I wish I could have seen it before I parted with my money. Seriously dissapointed with the quality and the fit for the price that it is. I've had to remove the tongue pads that slide under the tank just to get it to fit, when you look underneath (I know you dont see it when its on) its been thrown together. The seat unit is the same part number as stock with just a little foam removed from where the pillion would be. It is no lighter than stock.

I cant comment on the comfort side as I've not been out on it after I fitted it. But dont feel left out! I'm sure you can spend £649 more wisely than i did!!

Hi Cobra88,

first of all: what a gorgeous bike that you had the patience to put together. Or should I say: the passion to put together?

I am thinking of building from scratch a 1100evo project with Oehlins suspension front and rear. You have very nicely detailed some of the important steps to do so. Thank you very much for that!

I was wondering, the 1100evo comes with ABS as default. However, most 1100s models that I have seen do not have ABS (if I remember correctly on the the last year - 2010? would have had ABS). Hence, my question: did your Oehlins fork come with ABS mounts? Where does the sensor go? Or did you get rid of ABS altogether?

I know that this sounds a bit like nit-picking, but in my experience it is these small details that can cost me months and a lot of (unnecessary) cash.

Have a good ride - and safe!
Mike

Cobra88
25-08-2014, 09:45 AM
Hi Mike

I kept the ABS as it works great and even after 34 years riding it can stop shorter than I can first time
in an emergency ;).

All M1100 evo have ABS.

the ABS will fit fine as it's all mounted on a sub assembly that fits between the mudguard and forks.

Good luck finding a set of Ohlins S forks as it took me 2 years to find a set (eBay.de)

your only problem will be finding 848 brake discs as the Ohlins forks have the calipers spaced 10mm
further apart.

I ended up fitting 330 mm 1098/1199 Discs as they are far more common on eBay.

Mike_M900
25-08-2014, 11:02 AM
Thank you Cobra!

I will see what I can find. Wow! It took you 2 years to find a set of Ohlins forks! I can imagine that it is most risky to find a set that is not damaged - hence, not bent or scratched. I know from a friend, that there are people who had accidents and then try to sell as much of their bikes as possible - even damaged parts.

Have a safe ride!

Cobra88
25-08-2014, 01:14 PM
Hi Mike

The biggest problem finding the Forks is they are sought after mod for the Sport Classic Ducati
so they go for £2000 plus and straight to the USA.

they are pretty rare for that reason I think ;)
