This has been bugging me. When the 696 arrived in my garage it was a moment of opportunity and I always thought I'd upgrade to a 796. I test rode one last week and I was disappointed. Now, don't get me wrong its a really nice bike to ride but it just wasn't the jump in performance I was expecting. I don't think I could justify buying one. Has anyone else made this jump? It was an escorted test ride...did I miss something? Or should I test to the 1100 evo. I'm not new to bikes and have owned litre bikes, sports bikes etc etc????

You'd notice the difference between 696 and 796 in a drag race, even if it's not a huge leap, the 796 would creep ahead. Definitely test the 1100 (what have you got to lose anyway) the extra torque really shows low down.

Thanks Slob. I may have set my expectations to high. I'll have to give the 1100 a go

Dont also forget the looks are different. The 696 is no slouch and the 796 is just that bit more with that taller ride like its big 1100 brother and the single sided unit. Personally I think the jump from 696 to 796 is a waste unless you like the different look. Big Oz who is ultra happy with his 696 said this to me this very morning.
796 is a great entry bike but not necessarily if you are short. The 696 is the lowest height.

You will find the EVO a great bike.

Ride the 1100. You'll buy one trust me. If u search I did a short review when I changed from 696 to 1100s

Definitely try the 1100 or EVO - a much bigger step from the 696.
Or give the Streetfighter a try.

Took my 1100 (not evo) to Brighton Ace burn up today - scares me stupid but makes me grin like the Cheshire cat every time i ride it on the open road! Just ride the torque!!!

But if you ride in town my dry clutch 1100 isnt so much fun...but the lighter wet clutch on the evo and a drop to a 14t front sprocket would probably make it the best and thrilling real world road bike you could buy? Whilst keeping your licence...

I know it's not a monster and all of that BUT .... I had a bash on a 748 .... liked that a lot :eyepopping:
On my wish list along with the S2R and a season ticket to a chiropracter ;)

Me old back won't take any more sports bikes......Mind you I still go off into days dreams sometimes about having another 749......then I remember the service bills and wake up....these days hobby rule number 1 is: No More Money pits....... however the 696 is coming up for valve clearances and belts and tyres.......oh dear....

Having just converted from the Monster 696 to the 1000 DS engine, albeit not a Monster, I must admit it was definitely worth the upgrade, I can't believe how much fun it is. I do hope to have an M1100 or an Evo in the next few years so look forward to trying either of these and I do wonder what's next for the Monster. I have had the Monster S2R 800 as well but I think the 696 was a much better bike and the engine seemed a bit more pokier, that might just be my bad memory though.
