I've been trawling the forum, unashamedly soaking up information the last few weeks and though it was about time I said hello.
I'm Tom, live in Northampton and as of last weekend am the owner of an S4. Had bikes for years but more recently have got into the old brits, I've got a couple of 'classics' but not having a car I decided I needed something more modern for getting about on.
Had a M600 about 12 years ago and decided to return to the fold, the S4 is certainly a different animal! Its on 9000 miles, one lady owner from new until about 14 months ago when the previous brought it. He only did about 500 miles on the bike then sold it to me.
The bike has the DP 'kit' fitted - low level termi's, filter and ECU, has Ducati service history only up to 4000 miles, then nothing until it had new belts 14 months ago when it had an oil and fillter change (no receipts) it recently had a new clutch kit. I've just changed the oil and filter plus brake fluids and confirmed the belts are a recent addition although will change them in the winter along with getting the tappets checked, pulled the gauze filter and no chrome flakes..
One question - how much noise should I expect with a 4 valve motor? when pootling along it sounds as if the injectors are ticking away, but I think this is top end noise, once you open it up this does get a bit louder - is this normal for a 916 engine?

Wecome Tom, wealth of information and friendly folks here. The clatter you can here is most probably the clutch

Hello Tom! Welcome.
Can't imagine its anything serious at just 9000 miles, is it louder than the induction noise from the airbox when u open it up?

I don't have to strain to hear it, comes through loud and clear, but I've got the feeling its just the Desmo valvetrain noise, don't think its the clutch, can't really remember any noise from my 600 - I think I'm just fretting because its new to me and a bit different.
Certainly not much wrong with the engine - it accelerates so fast my eyes can't keep up with it!

Is it Red and were you riding with 3 others on the way into town today? The only reason I ask is I might have seen you

Sounds like your clutch noise whilst moving. My s4 used to clatter whilst riding. Just a hint of rattle mind. Welcome aboard and enjoy the forum and bike

Hello all, thanks for the welcome, no ride for me today, got called out at 7 this morning and just got home. The perils of standby, still, i never moan about it when my wages get paid.
