OK so how do I get the flange back in the tank without causing damage!
grease the damn thing and then use some force? was thinking rubber mallet and grease.
any suggestions
J
no, it's fiddly but will go with just pushing eventually, I would avoid a mallet at all costs.

It is a pain in the arse & takes a lot of patience
Make sure no paint overspray went in the filler neck hole or it won't fit
The rubber water seal on top face is 100 times more fiddly than filler neck TBH
Seriously it's a 3 min job once you know how

Trouble is Capo I don't do it often enough to remember how I did it the last time
I last had to do it on the trike tank in 2006... oh what fun.. not  Then a few weeks ago had to install one on the other monsters tank after a re-paint. Still proved to be a right pain in the arse. There is definately a knack to it... which I obviously don't have, and usually resort to the tried and tested 'Tourettes' method of swearing it in :banghead:
I did it about 3 times in sucession, I too would have forgotten how, but I took pics and made entries in my note book so I reckon it would take me 5 minutes now.
Fit the gasket to the filler so it looks like this then it just pushes in
