It's time to replace the timing belts on my bike and have stumbled across "dayco" as an alternative to genuine ducati oem. Thet are £20 each so cheaper but was wondering if anyone on here has had the courage to try them ?

They're on ebay alot. I'm sure they're ok, tho always a tad risky not going oem. I bought my M600 a month ago and it's not got oem ones, but I won't change them till they're due. Even pattern parts have to meet strict standards so you should be ok.

Dayco are the OEM supplier to Audi, Bentley Lancia and Aprilia & Suzuki amoung others so not all that bad I'd say

Both Dayco and Gates seem to be of a useable quality, its just that dayco are half the price which makes me have a feeling of inferior quality or rip off prices by gates!

Just out of interest, has anyone on here ever had a cambelt failure on a Ducati?

Just spoken to my local Ducati mechanic who has advised me that if he fits oem belts, even though the bike is out of warranty, if they fail and damage other parts of the engine which can be proved, ducati will supply those parts free of charge due to him being in the circle....

Dunno about your particular model, but I recently had some OEM belts for my 750 from G-tec in leicester.
They were a bit cheaper than normal prices....not a lot, but I liked it.
Free postage too.

For the amount the belts cost to purchase every 2 years... is saving a few quid really a big deal?

If they cost £60 a set that's 57p a week

Ok I'm with Phatty on this one, there's a lot of advise of changing belts but I've never heard of a belt failure, every two years does seem excessive

Mine get changed annually so slightly more saving there.

I had a belt fail on a 600 supersport motor, just snapped clean across with no fraying at all, never knew why but that was a ducati badged one.
The horizontal head and piston where left a bit worse for wear :(
Ran but just a bit sluggish (ammend that a bit more sluggish than usual) and ever so slightly noisey :eyepopping:

I had a dayco belt fail on a car that still 10,000 miles to go before it needed to be changed, and seeing other dayco belts from other cars that had rips on edges of the belts i imho would not use them.
sometimes buying cheap isnt anyways good. but its up to u!!!

If a belt develops rips on its edge you can't blame the belt, it must have been running out of true in order for the edge to touch anything.

nope, wasnt, and was fitted by the manufacturer, it was its first belt change from new.
seen it twice now, two different cars.

and, my local motor factors has stopped selling dayco and is now selling gates.

It's not all about making a saving, sometimes it's not completely necessary to be a slave to the brand where other manufacurers can make an alternative of equal or better quality...

I have known cambelt failure...one of the lads local to me had one fail on his 748 several years ago.The belts had been fitted for about 26 months.personally I would change the belts as per the servicing schedule, the repair bill was in excess of £1000,changing belts is a cheaper option.
