 fuel pump primes, engine turns over (slowly) but does not fire or attempt to fire. Will a low volts battery cause difficulties or is there something more sinister?

Difficult to be exact, but it does sound as though your battery is suffering, as they tend to in the colder weather. :(

You should be hearing at least two 'chugga-chugga' cycles per second, I suspect you're not. With so much juice going to the starter motor things like the fuel pump/injectors etc fail to fire.

Try giving the battery a good long charge in the warmth of your house and try again.

Cheers.

It's your battery

I'm in the same situation right now !

Remove your battery, give it a good wipe down, clean the terminals, top-up the cells, check the vent pipe is ok ( mine had a small split in it )

Now recharge your battery, I've decided to go for a Optimate III, battery charger/maintainer, so it will stay in peak condition
