Guys
do I need the 'hook' spanner to tighten the chain on an s2r?
I have released the pinch bolts, rotated the wheel (with and out of gear) but to no effect.
Do I need to release the bolts and the lever, with the spanner, the rear axle?

You need a tool like a shock adjuster but with a bigger 'c', think it's called a c spanner.
To adjust the tension you must turn the toothed disk behind the rear sprocket with this tool or something else that you can get to work.
Hope this helps...

1. loosen pinch bolts
2. lift rear wheel with paddock stand
3. use said tool on eccentric hub - somewhere in front of brake disc
4. tighten up

thanks for the link Bryan, that's the cheapest i've seen them.
You don't need to lift the rear wheel, although it is probably best practice.

yeah, just easier :P

i had one of those cheapy tools - just be careful to make sure you pull it straight, otherwise it bends. i've hammered mine flat a few times...

The correct C spanner is available on Ebay
Note the torque of the pinch bolts is critical overtightening can cause bearing failure.
The eccentric offset should be below the 90/270 degree plane.
Moving the eccentric will also alter the ride height.

Be sure to get tourqe settings on the eccentric bolts correct! overtightening them can wreck the bearings in it.
