Anyone got any bright ideas for removing burnt on plastic residue from the stainless header pipe on a 696? I was wiping some muck off the front heatshield with a microfibre (hence plastic) cloth and accidentally brushed the still hot header pipe.

I now have an interesting textile print effect in burnt black plastic over a few square inches of the pipe. so I would like to remove it without discolouring or scratching the pipe.

Ideas anybody? :gromit:

autosol ?
but you might end up working the whole pipe !

1000 grade wet/dry used wet then autosol

but as stef says, you will prob end up doing the whole pipe to match

I did the same on mine, melted a glove to it! I used a bit of wet scotchbrite then autosol, came up lovely and I did indeed end up doing the whole pipe.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! I'm not sure I can burn it off - it looks thoroughly burnt ON!

As for doing the whole pipe... I expect you're right! I had a sneaky feeling this wasn't going to be a quick job!!

thinking about it, you could melt platic over the whole pipe. that would be quicker.

yep, probably the only way.
this will also imply some carbon fibre racing mirrors to match.

Essentially a mildly abrasive chrome cleaner .. there's some stuff called polian on ebay that looks pretty similar

I also saw something called rim wax but was a liitle afraid to look ;)

I have an iron that often gets plastic melted onto it (solar film for traditional built up model planes). I just get it very hot and rub it off with a cotton rag

I'd have thought paint thinners would probably work too - seems to melt most plastic stuff!

+1 on the Scotchbrite (but make sure the exhaust is cool first).

You could try pigeon sh1t.
It seems to remove just about every bloody thing else.
