really struggling to use this software for my Zumo, has anybody used it before or know an alternative simple version?

I haven't looked at it before, but here goes.
top tool bar, find, post code (put in your post code and house number)
when the box pops up in the bottom right hand side, make way point.
do this for another address.
you now have 2 waypoints showing in the top left, under the way points tab.
highlight both and right click your mouse.
create route.
it is done.

I haven't but Andy has. Andy says you're very welcome to come round to our place and he can talk you through route planning (as long as you bring beer)!

you can also use the map zoomed in, and add flag way points, once 2 way points are highlighted you tell it to recalculate and show on map.
there is also a directions button.
I used my house and my mates near Inverness, it gave a route.
Use Mapquest

Well, all you need to do is punch our postcode into your sat nav and... erm.... ah.
