Started taking apart my standard cans today on the 900 and took some photos of the start of the process to help other folks who may be considering doing this themselves.

First thing to do is remove the x2 13mm bolts which secure the mounting brackets to the inside of the can.

Next you need to slide the aluminium sleeve back towards the engine end to expose the welds on the inner stainless steel section.

Next you need to cut off the end piece but make sure you leave enough of the shoulder on the end cap to remount it. I intend on drilling mine to accommodate rivets and only using the outer sleeve and doing away with the heavy inner stainless steel sleeve.

I used an angle grinder to cut through the outer part and a hacksaw to cut the smaller inner tube - this part is a ball ache.

You will then be able to take the outer sleeve off and see what makes it weigh so much - its x2 sleeves and inner baffle tubes and steel wool.

Now you have the end cap off you need to remove the little pea shooter part that reduces the diameter of the outlet to something that looks like it comes from a 125.

Luckily Ducati didn't even weld this in so hammer that pipe out!

Progress so far.

Tape is for a rough idea of how short I'm thinking of making them.

Next issue will be locating some perforated baffle tube and getting it adapted to sit inside the silencer (lol) correctly.

Nice one! I have got some 45mm left over from when I did my old Suzuki Goose but unfortunately its going to be too small.

I don't know for certain but at a guess if say do as the cans look very similar to me.

Later bikes like my 900ie have longer cans, but other than that they are similar internally.

Once you have got both ends cut off you can chuck these steel silencer arrangements out.

These are what you want to keep as you will be making your new cans from these components.

Just in case you care what's inside the stock silencers here its a shot from inside each end.

Normally when you read a write up on coring most people who do it only do half a job and leave this part inside.

If you are going to keep the stock length you don't need to do this stage.

Decide what length you want your cans and mark then ready for cutting.

Important note: do not try and cut all the way through in one go as you will cut wonky. Make a series of small cuts and then join them up and you will cut a much more accurate line ;)

Final update for today, a comparison between stock length and the length I will be having on my bike - approximately 1/3 shorter than stock.
