I know this is a Monster forum but I have no where else to go, unless I go to the 'meericans!

What I want to know is are the engines on Monsters and SS's the same? Just want to know if there are any problems/faults I need to know of

Oh and I'm talking about the later curvy shape 99/00 ish

Same, just for me it seems SS rev's higher and delivers it's power later but might be just me as my monster is carb while my SSie is injected.

Which SS's were injected?

Once you get to the injected engines then they are the same. The only difference on carby engines is that the ss had a mechanical tacho drive on the front cylinder.

On the 900 models the original carby Monster had the same engine as the 900SS but the later 900 carby Monster got the small valve heads, whereas the SS always had the big valve 'V2' heads.

So a late model carby SS has more power than the equivalent Monster.

Well being I have both and ride them back to back I can tell you that SS rev's till 11k easy and pulls till 10k before flattening out. Carbed monster in stock revs to 9.5k, 10k at best but power flattens at about 8.5k so no need for it.

Like said SS engine seems better for baking with fairings as it revs longer plenty of fun and plenty of easy upgrades can be done.

Exhaust, open air box and high comp pistons to start with.

I have a 750ss 1991 and a M750 2000 the early 750ss had dry clutch and the engine seems smoother than the monster later 750ss have exaclty same engine as Monster , the ss is a lovely bike

Wrong place to ask but out of a Firestorm and an SS which would you choose?

Here's one for you

I quite like Apples and Oranges, but often find myself looking at grapes longingly in Sainsbury's

Which would you choose?

Also I once owned a 12" marrow and a fully ripe melon.. never really got on with either

Perhaps I should consider trading them in for root vegetables...

I don't see how the apples, oranges, grapes whatever argument works? They are both meant to be sports tourers and are V Twins. One is Italian and the other is Japanese

Thank you to those that actually replied with useful info

a firestorm obviously, but i expect if you ask on the honda forum they would definitely say a SS

id swap my R1 for this -- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-53-HONDA-VTR-1000-SP2-S-3-/330693126762?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item4cfed8aa6a

Firestorm has bulletproof honda motor but does not handle as well as an SS and it has abyssmal fuel tank range and guzzles fuel ,

I've ridden both and yes, they're apple and oranges. One is a lardy, long, souless 4 valves Casio watch and the other is a nimble ( I know of at least one person which recently has said to me that handle better than a monster) 2V air cooled, and the design IMO is one of Terblanche finest. That said I suggest you get a Firestorm.
And I would hardly classify an SS a Sport Tourer.

Is Sweeney Todds barbers shop above there?

A Honda twin compared to an SS will be different.
Every bike is somewhat it's own animal.

The only way to make a choice is read the bumf then test ride..

It's no good people saying yep great bike
Because one mans treasure is anothers trash.

The only way your know is to ride the bikes your thinking of owning.

makes sense as some bits may be interchangeable with your Monster should an emergency arrive. Only thing i'd say is make sure you've got a nice concave area in your lower chest to clear the back of that tank on long journeys (or raise the bars).

I've got an m900 and a 900ss - both with carbs, no curvy bits and I know about which one I prefer... (and it's not the m900, though the SS is sod to keep ticking over when it's cold)

Max, Gary, budge over - room for another??

Only if you bring a few sprouts and some celeriac

He11cat
13-03-2012, 11:59 PM
I don't think anybody would want to be in a confined space with you chaps after eating all those sprouts!!!!

My 400ss hates the cold and is a sod to get it ticking over!

What about a nice yellow Superlight!?
