View Full Version : Do crash bungs make the newer monsters look ugly?

Im considering some crash protection for the 1100. It'll either be evotech (£60) or R&G aero (£80).

I completely understand the reasons to have them . But i kinda feel that they ruin the lines of the bike and stick out too much. Are they really that noticable in real life ? As they look quite bad on the pics

Not as ugly as grinding it along the tarmac will make it :chuckle:

I was looking for some recently too. Having seen pics of Albie's/Rally's etc, the answer is no not at all in my opinion.

I would go for some if you want to save your bike in the event of a crash, and i dont think they look noticeable, or dont fall off.......

Also a simple dropping off the stand can cost a fortune without them, let alone a crash.

The question is .... Do crash bungs make the newer monsters look ugly?

;) Nope they do that all by themselves and some bungs might even improve them

Rizoma make some very nice engine guards for the new style of monster, they look like small winglets but do the same job as crash bungs, they even use the same long threaded bar that holds the engine into the frame.

You pays your money and takes your choice...

Err... let me get this right

You are trying to save £20 on a set of crash bungs, when even a low speed off can cause thousands of pounds of damage to tank, engine cases, clutch.. etc. I think you are missing the point by a mile :fou:

Have a chat with Shuffy or other UKMOCers that have dropped a monster with bungs fitted

Then decide if you still think they make a bike look ugly

I have a full set, frame/fork/swingarm and no longer even notice them. Bike has been on the deck once since fitting them when I put her down and not even a scratch to the bike. They are worth their weight in gold as a friend of mine found out when he lost the rear end on his ZX6R on some diesel at a roundabout, crash bung was destroyed but bike was ok.

I dont dispute they can save a bike in a fall.

So how exactly are the R & G going to out perform the evotech ones for my extra £20?

I cant see that they are. Hence cant see any reason to spend the extra. Both should do the same job in my eyes.

Might use a skateboard wheel and a bit of metal bar as thats even cheaper. lol

Im gonna get some for sure. Just still think they are ugly

I've got the Evotech ones and I don't think you really notice them, nice to know they are there and asthetically no major difference, got to be worth it.

Nope I'm old school, if I wanted a new shaped monster i'd have bought a suzuki :mand:

As the r1, there is always enough room in our garage for it.

I've never fitted crash bungs to any of my bikes because I've heard horror stories about the bungs doing more structural damage to the bike in an event of a fall/drop. Looking at where the bungs need to be fitted to the monster, I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on this?

Also, given the routing of the pipes on the EVO, I'm not sure any bungs would save them anyway...they have been know to touch down at extreme lean angles...

Thanks for the heads-up BB!

These look like an excellent compromise between looks and functionality (and safety), although they are a bit expensive for what they are/are supposed to do.

http://www.rizoma.com/en/products-bikes-lines/l:193/i:104/engine-guard-shape.html

I have a mate who used to make any type of 'engine guard/frame slider' out of aluminium and delrin if you gave him a sample. Perhaps I might give him a call...

I'm not sure why Rizoma make crash protection, it would surely be cheaper to repair the bike than have to replace scuffed bling?

Paivi

It's not the crash bungs that make the new style ugly. It's the design that does it.

Old style is where it's at.

Looked @ Rizoma frame protection, £191 @ Twinshack just up the road in Darlington.
Went down to Evotech in Lincolnshire, bought the full set, front/swingarm/frame for under £120 and blagged an Evotech T-shirt, LED torch and some bourbon creams. Result. :mand:

Were they hard to fit d8mok ?
Did you have to jack up the engine to stop it dropping out ?

No they were very very easy. Just used a small hammer to knock the new threaded bar through the mount which pushes the old one out. Then just bolt the bobbins on either end and tighten it up. Took about 5 mins.

I assume the bolts were done up to correct torque setting - seeing as they support engine in frame?

Isn't the corret torque setting Gary just as the head starts to round off, then stop?

Why don't you ask Jeeves - Or are you telling me you now actually spanner on your own bikes? [insert pigs might fly smiley]

Oh... and the emergency clutch rebuild in Belgium doesn't count as you were being coached (abused) from sidelines :D

Come to think of it... if laid out an egg whisk, torque wrench and set of curling tongs in front of you would you be able to tell the difference?

Why take it out of the garage and risk dropping it? There again why buy it in the first place if you are'nt willing to protect it from all of the other ideots on the road and my favourite DIESAL which all other road users liberally spread around just for our benefit.

Crash bungs may look out of place and spoil the asthetics of the bike but from personal experience they look better than two and a half thousand quids worth of damage which I incurred in a 15 mile an hour spill on the wifes 620. And yes I'm still in the dog house two years later.

Well JP if I were you I wouldn't give up the day job just yet. Surprisingly quite professional considering its a Ducati shirt (poss Belgium or UKMOC special, judging by the badge on your left sleeve?) with trousers that have pockets at the knee. However your wearing latex gloves, think that says it all. :chuckle::twak:

Only joking btw..
